00:00The Paralympics is in full swing, but it has become controversial.
00:04It started because of some scenes in its opening ceremony
00:08that some viewers did not like.
00:11That is what Professor Antonio Contreras will discuss in Punto de Vista, Professor.
00:22Thank you very much and good morning to all of you in the studio
00:26and to all of the viewers of Rise and Shine Pilipinas.
00:31The Paralympics has already started
00:36and our athletes are already there, the Filipino athletes
00:40who continue to carry the flag of our country.
00:44There are a lot of good things that happened there.
00:47And with that, I was personally impressed.
00:50My jaw dropped when I saw Celine Dion singing.
00:54For those who don't know Celine Dion, she is a famous singer.
00:58She had a feeling and that's why a lot of people were surprised
01:03and impressed when she sang with all force, with all the emotions.
01:08There were also a lot of beautiful scenes that happened,
01:12the fireworks, the torch,
01:15and the unique opening ceremony where instead of in the arena,
01:19the opening ceremony was held on the river.
01:22The athletes were riding on a boat.
01:25But all of this was covered up by the chaos
01:28that was caused by the controversy of a painting by Vivant,
01:33Manuel Tablo Vivant, the living painting,
01:35created by Thomas Jolly, a creative artist,
01:39which was ridiculed by a desecration of the religious icon
01:44of the Christians, the Last Supper,
01:47which was painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
01:50Thomas Jolly said that he did not use the Last Supper as an inspiration.
01:55Even so, the organizers apologized
01:59and said that they did not intend to hurt the feelings
02:04and to attack the religion.
02:06But that is still the case on the internet and on social media.
02:11We will not talk about who is right and who is wrong there.
02:14We don't have time.
02:15There are many arguments.
02:17We will talk about the more important question or question.
02:21Why is it that the religion that aims to unify people,
02:28or to give love,
02:33to be the guide of the community,
02:36to understand, to give, to forgive,
02:41causes chaos?
02:44Why is it that religion
02:46which is teaching love and understanding and forgiveness,
02:50has created so much discord and so much animosity?
02:55If we go back in history,
02:56there were many bloodshed in life
03:00that were caused by the religion.
03:02During the Inquisition,
03:04many people were burned or crucified
03:08because they were not followers of a religion.
03:13And until now,
03:15the religion of chaos is spreading
03:18and we have seen it in the dispute
03:20regarding the dehumanization of the last supper.
03:26The answer is simple.
03:29That is why the religion of non-understanding becomes a myth
03:34because every religion assumes that they are the only right ones,
03:40that their followers are the only ones who will be saved.
03:44And the others who do not believe are enemies.
03:50We have the freedom to believe.
03:53The separation of state and religion is in accordance with our law in the Philippines.
03:59We do not violate the law
04:02if we do not believe in a religion.
04:04There is only one law that prohibits
04:08you to preach the religion in a ritual.
04:14But we have the freedom to speak.
04:18We have free speech rights.
04:20So, you can go against the religion,
04:23you can also go against those who go against your religion,
04:27but it is not a crime.
04:30But it is not a crime.
04:33There is no law that prohibits you to criticize a religion.
04:37We have freedom.
04:40They say it is blasphemy.
04:42It only happens when you go to a mass
04:45and you will be disturbed there.
04:47So, if there is a ritual of a religion,
04:49that is where you will destroy a religion.
04:52So, you will desecrate saints or churches.
04:58That is what the law prohibits.
05:01But if you write on social media or speak against a religion,
05:07that is protected by the law.
05:11It is easy for people to turn their heads when it comes to religion.
05:15But we should think about what others think.
05:20If what happens is that they have the freedom to speak,
05:25we also have the freedom to respond to their arguments
05:28in a respectful and peaceful manner.
05:33One thing that can be affected here
05:35is when we use religion to discriminate against others.
05:41It is already customary in religion that
05:43if someone does not believe in you,
05:45you think that he is a demon,
05:48that he is guilty.
05:51And now we are seeing this
05:53because if you look at what happened in Paris,
05:56the tableau event there,
05:58it was not the first time that there were images
06:02and representations of the last supper of Leonardo da Vinci.
06:07There were many popular cultural imagery that showed that,
06:15like in television, in the soap opera House,
06:19in the movie The Simpsons, in The Expendables.
06:21There were also images of dogs on the table.
06:27We did not react much to that.
06:30But now that this tableau event happened in Paris,
06:32there are many people speaking.
06:34Maybe in the time of social media,
06:36it is easy to press a keyboard when you are angry.
06:40But one theme that comes up here
06:42is because maybe homophobia is still high
06:46because drag queens are performing.
06:49It is still clear from the comments that we read.
06:52Because there are drag queens,
06:54there is homophobia and anger because there are LGBTQs.
06:58But the dogs were not noticed.
07:03So that is why we are a bit delicate.
07:06When religion is used to discriminate,
07:09to exercise bigotry and prejudice against a group of people.
07:15I repeat,
07:16religion is about love and understanding.
07:18It's about reaching out.
07:20It's about forgiveness.
07:23We should not allow it to become an instrument of discord,
07:27an instrument of fighting, of misunderstanding,
07:32and of confusion.
07:34That is all I want to say for today.
07:36Thank you very much.
07:37I will return to the studio.
07:41Thank you very much, Professor Contreras.
