00:00It is the foundational matrix of a state or country, the glue that keeps people unified
00:10toward one objective spirit.
00:12And today is the first day of National Language Month.
00:15Good evening, Monique Tuzon here for PTV News Now.
00:19President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. this afternoon joined the Filipino people to cherish and
00:24treasure the national language to inspire the youth and younger generations in appreciating
00:29and valuing their unique identity and rich heritage by speaking and expressing themselves
00:35in their mother or native tongue.
00:37In his message for the occasion, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. he urged Filipinos
00:42to delve and discover the rich literary works of authors and writers who wrote in the vernacular
00:48and be inspired by their profound and probing thoughts expressed in Filipino or the national
00:54language.
00:55In addition, the President pointed out how Filipino or the national language was key
01:00in the country's liberation from occupation and colonization and how it cemented the personal
01:06freedoms gained from independence and self-rule.
01:10National Language Month was institutionalized by virtue of Proclamation 1041 issued by then
01:17President Fidel V. Ramos in 1997.
01:21This year's theme for the month-long celebration, Filipino Wikang Magpapalaya or Filipino the
01:26Liberating Language.
01:30It was his preface act before officially diving into politics and eventually into the 2016
01:35presidential race which he ultimately and surprisingly won.
01:39Way before he announced his intent to run for president in 2015, Donald J. Trump took
01:44aim at then President Barack Obama and questioned his roots and citizenship in his infamous
01:50birthism theory which was eventually debunked for its falsehood and conspiracy theories.
01:56It resurfaced and was in full display at the just concluded National Association of Black
02:01Journalists Q&A that VOA's Scott Stearns hashes over in this report.
02:07Republican candidate Donald Trump told supporters in the key swing state of Pennsylvania that
02:14his likely Democratic opponent is a fraud.
02:17The radical left Democrat party bosses have installed a puppet candidate to fight only
02:22for themselves.
02:24Kamala Harris got zero votes.
02:32She's totally scripted, owned and controlled by the donors and the power brokers who created
02:37her campaign and who rip off our government and make billions and billions of dollars.
02:43Former President Donald Trump.
02:45Earlier in the day, Trump had a contentious meeting with black journalists where he questioned
02:50the racial identity of Harris, whose mother was Indian and her father is black.
02:55She was always of Indian heritage and she was only promoting Indian heritage.
03:01I didn't know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black
03:05and now she wants to be known as black.
03:08So I don't know.
03:09Is she Indian or is she black?
03:10Harris has long self-identified as both black and South Asian American.
03:15Since becoming the likely Democratic presidential candidate, she's drawn even with Trump in
03:20seven key swing states, according to political polling by Bloomberg News and the Morning
03:26Consult, largely on the strength of greater support from young black and Hispanic voters.
03:32So the momentum in this race is shifting.
03:37And there are signs that Donald Trump is feeling it.
03:41You may have noticed.
03:45Harris told a rally Tuesday in Georgia that Trump seems to have a lot to say about her,
03:51but does not want to debate in September as scheduled.
03:54Well, Donald.
03:57I do hope you'll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage.
04:14Because as the saying goes, if you've got something to say.
04:23Harris is expected to announce her vice presidential pick in the coming days and still has the
04:28party's convention in Chicago to help convince voters that she's a better choice than Trump.
04:33In North Carolina, voter Wanda Cherry says she's excited about the Democratic Party switch
04:39from President Joe Biden to Harris.
04:41I'm glad that the president realized that we need somebody younger to run the country.
04:52Somebody that has the smarts and the willingness to run.
05:02Georgia voter T. Stanley does not believe Harris is ready to be president.
05:06First her being the candidate is kind of it's really this is like horrific to me because
05:16first of all, she's not prepared to be president and it seems like she's already president
05:20now.
05:21Georgia voter Phil Ownby says Harris has reinvigorated the presidential race.
05:25I will vote for her and I'm excited to do so.
05:30I generally think she may be a little liberal on certain issues, but in order to safeguard
05:35our democracy, I definitely vote for her.
05:38In California, voter Marina George says Trump's support is strong enough to defeat any challenger.
05:45Even with the camel hairs coming in, anyone they put, they're not going to win.
05:50It's just making the Democrat Party break apart even more and faster and everything
05:56that they're doing is good for the Republicans.
05:59Nationally, the Bloomberg poll shows Harris and Trump in a statistical tie with fewer
06:04than 100 days to go before election day.
06:06Scott Stearns, VOA News.
06:10And at this moment, let's head to my colleague in PTV's Baguio City Station for what's brewing
06:17of late in the Cordilleras.
