00:00Gentlemen, we've already been through the final instructions in the dressing room, you know what I expect, a clean fight, obey my commands at all times, above all, protect yourselves at all times, touch gloves, thank you.
00:30The depth and the quality all the way to the top in tonight, what a chance in this rematch from Michael Webster in for David Adelaide who has sadly missed this appointment, although we understand Adelaide is not far away from fitness and in the meantime it's all on Solomon Dakers to do a better job a second time around in this rematch.
00:49First of two here in Birmingham tonight than he did first time round and that's Dakers own verdict on his performance last time Richie, but he's nearly a stone lighter on the scales yesterday, he said he was in sparring mode because he was working with Tyson Fury last time, Michael Webster just popped up on the radar, they took the fight, Webster did well, he thought he might even have sneaked in, Dakers needs better tonight by his own admission, do you agree?
01:14Totally agree, yes, he needs to be a lot better than he was in the last contest, it was very, very close and Webster will be actually confident going into this that he can turn that around, Dakers, yes, he does look lighter, he's been training hard, but he'll need a better performance Paul than when he got the win last time because it was too close for comfort and a lot of people thought Webster just nicked it, so yeah, we're expecting a better Dakers, let's see what we get.
01:44So 17 stone 8 pounds last time, Dakers yesterday 16 stone 10 and not just the physical weight and the mindset, but also he said I just didn't feel like I was really able to go hard rounds in terms of fitness because obviously against Tyson Fury you're going to spend a little bit of time sitting on the rope, you're going to spend a little bit of time in timeouts while Fury and his people talk about what they're doing and it is so different isn't it to just be thrown into a fight, of consequence Richie.
02:14Yeah most definitely, but you know at the end of the day Paul you know he's been sparring with people like Tyson Fury and again the division is electric isn't it in the UK with Fury, AJ Dubois, Joe Joyce, Dillian White, Wardley, even Fraser Clarke coming through, so you know and he wants to be in that mix, he's just outside that leading pack if you like, so you'll want to look good tonight and impress against a man who's been
02:44he's already beaten, so there might be a little bit of pressure on him, he's got to perform here tonight.
02:49I think he knows it too, the very well respected Boxrec rankings system has him at 14 right now, he'll jump up a couple of places with a win of course, Webster's actually not that far behind because he pushed him close last time, they tend to, obviously there are going to be question marks at the time, but they tend to work on the principle of recent form weighs most.
03:12I think what I said there earlier, it probably reflects on Michael Webster as well, as you said he's down 16 in the UK rankings, this is a big chance for him to leapfrog Solomon Dakers and try and get in the mix with that leading pack.
03:42Remember me, I'm the one who had to raise. Remember me, me, me, me, me.
04:03Touch that right hand, deeper.
04:08Keep that concentration there, sharp as well.
04:33It's this heavyweight rematch, and I must with every respect say Richie, it's not exactly started at an electrifying pace, has it?
04:40No, we expected a little bit more, as you said from Dakers, and he started off quite timid to be quite honest, and I think his corner said they want more from him, certainly with his right hand, so let's see if he sparks into action in this round 4, but yeah it was a slow start for him.
04:56Webster is not to be overlooked, he's got the air of a man who thinks he can do something special here tonight, it's a pawing jab, tentative jab from Dakers, he's rather letting Webster work his way into the contest, Webster is very much in his comfort zone so far.
05:14Spent in the shadows quite honestly Michael Webster so far at the age of 29, and he's a big fella to keep in the shadow, let's be very clear. 17-11 on the scales, 6 foot 6, but it can be awkward, and he is no mug, that is for sure.
05:41Dakers again, he's opted to just stay on the outside and slow things down and keep his distance, and we expected him maybe just to step on that gas a little bit, and as you see there, it's given Webster probably confidence, even Michael Webster, he was probably expecting a faster start from Dakers, but that hasn't happened, and Webster is settling down now, and I think he's quite enjoying the pace, he's having no problems with it.
06:08It's like a whole new career for him isn't it, never been on 4 round class until very recently.
06:14That's a good shot Paul from Webster, timed that right hand very nice indeed, and again, so this is better work for Webster.
06:22He seems like he learned plenty from that first meeting.
06:27And majority points verdict went Dakers way.
06:37Dakers won the title against Robert Ismay in March of 23, nice right hand that last uncaught, as Dakers slowly starts to up it.
06:53Yeah, probably just a little bit too far out though Paul, so good signs there from Dakers that he brought that right hand into play, but he's got to get a little bit closer.
07:02He seemed to connect right at sort of the end of the punt, at the end of the straight arm, so the tower's probably taken away if anything.
07:10He's got to try and get Webster to come forward, bring him onto a shot, there you see, as he's coming forward, bring him onto that right hand.
07:18A little bit closer for me Dakers.
07:22And again Michael, come on.
07:27Against the crowd at least at the end of the round, but Webster is engaged Dakers and fancies the job tonight.
07:53I'm the one who had to reign.
08:07Bang a right hand over, come on.
08:11It's an English title fight, not an amateur contest.
08:15Live in your cell phone.
08:17There you run.
08:19Dennis Power is trying to fire Michael Webster up in that corner.
08:24Two rounds in, been nice and tidy so far, but maybe we take from that, I think Solomon Dakers could be there for the taking.
08:32And it's up to Solomon Dakers to show that he is meant to be the prospect in this fight.
08:37Well the Webster corner there, a little bit frustrating weren't they with their boxer, they think he should be the one up in the pace here.
08:44It's been a slow start from both of them, but yeah, they're clearly not happy with Webster.
08:49They think he should be taking the initiative here Paul and really going for it, because it looks like Dakers is sitting back and slowing things down.
08:56As is often said and might be said later again in the Heaney Paul's rematch.
09:01The first round of the second fight is like the, what, 13th in a championship fight of the preceding job.
09:07And the problem is Richie, for Dakers, Webster and his camp thought they were winning it last time.
09:11Yeah, exactly.
09:13So, changes have to be made by both boxers here Paul, but clearly Webster's corner were not happy.
09:21And say he should be letting his hands go a lot more.
09:28Matt McCracken roars across to Dakers from the other corner, you're letting him set.
09:34Make him work, they say, he's not doing that at the moment.
09:38Again, nice and sharp and very composed indeed from Webster.
09:44The problem with Dakers Paul, he doesn't really commit, especially with his right hand.
09:49He throws it and he's still, he doesn't take his feet in with him, so he's throwing the shots and he's staying at distance.
09:56And it's not really working.
09:58He's throwing the shots and he's staying at distance.
10:02And it's not really effective enough, he's not close enough to have any effect in terms of the power.
10:08And he's getting caught at range, this is better for Webster, just a jab, but it gets through.
10:21It was one decent right hand in the exchange from Dakers, but Webster's walking through everything.
10:26You know, just in terms of the early career profile, in heavyweight terms,
10:31it doesn't look like Dakers is the most destructive young man out there.
10:35Two stoppage wins in the eight victories so far.
10:41Right hand again was sharp, in fairness to Dakers, but the volume of work seems to be with Webster.
10:46Yeah, as he's coming forward, you know, he's listening to his corner and he's sensing that Dakers is just trying to keep that gap.
10:53And Box at range and Webster, he's on to it, he's going forward and he's trying to force the pace now, Webster.
11:00But a couple of good right hands have landed from Dakers because Webster's coming over his front foot a little bit more.
11:16Devin Parkham calls a halt, we're nearly at the end of the third round anyway.
11:24This, this, this.
11:26Break!
11:53Fight night live on TNT Sports.
12:10Some rip roaring action in this resort weather arena in Birmingham tonight so far.
12:17Hasn't quite caught fire in heavyweight.
12:18These are the punch stats from Jabba through the first three rounds, approximately one third of the contest.
12:25Ten rounds in heavyweight for the English title.
12:27Solomon Dakers not having it all his own way by any means so far against Michael Webster in this rematch.
12:35Top of the build, the rematch between Nathan Heaney and Brad Paul later at middleweight.
12:40Yeah, he's a little bit too safety conscious, I think, Solomon Dakers here, Paul.
12:45And that may come back from his amateur days.
12:48Because that's how he used to box, but he hasn't really adapted in this contest.
12:54He's on the outside, he's throwing a straight one, two, but he's keeping his feet back.
12:59And he's, like I say, that's a safety conscious way of boxing, if anything.
13:03And even his corner said in there, Max McCracken was not happy.
13:06He said, listen, you've got to go forward, you've got to put it on him.
13:08And I get what he's saying here.
13:10He's just too safety conscious at the moment, Dakers.
13:13He's got to take a few more risks and be more offensive and go forward a little bit more.
13:18Yeah.
13:24It's a bad time to have an off night, this, isn't it, Richie?
13:28If you're Dakers.
13:30Yeah, indeed.
13:32He's got to put the record straight in this one.
13:34He was close enough last time.
13:36We'll see if anything has started okay in this contest.
13:45So Dakers has got to go for it and listen to his corner.
13:48Double that jab up and send that right hand home and force Webster on the back foot a little bit more.
14:06A lot of people in the crowd at the moment, arms folded, looking quizzically,
14:10saying to themselves, and I'm talking about the professional people at ringside in terms of boxing,
14:17is this what we were expecting to see tonight?
14:20A lot of puzzled looks on people's faces at the moment.
14:23People are deep in thought.
14:26And it's Webster who is threatening for me, Richie, to open up a bit more.
14:31Yeah, I think he's sensing, isn't he, that Dakers, there's no change from Dakers
14:36and he expected probably a little bit more like everyone else has
14:40and it's just not coming from Dakers at the moment.
14:42And that's probably giving encouragement for Webster.
14:44He's caught Dakers with a couple of good little left hooks on the inside
14:48as Dakers has tried to land his right hand in this round.
14:52But again, staying at distance, staying out of the way and not really getting involved, Dakers.
15:06Didn't get to the punch too often, isn't he?
15:08And that is exactly what got Max McCracken very irate in the Dakers corner
15:13at the end of round three.
15:15So I wouldn't swap places with Dakers going back to get my ears fried again by McCracken
15:20and I think that is about to happen at the end of this round.
15:23The rounds are slipping by here for Dakers.
15:29So Webster back but in contention in this fight
15:34and who can pick him in the British and Commonwealth Bantamweight title showdown
15:39a little bit later tonight.
15:40Andrew Kane against Ashley Lane.
15:42A very proud champion indeed.
15:44Lane is with Danny Jamieson.
15:47Ash, we saw what it meant for you to win these titles.
15:50What would it mean to defend them tonight?
15:52Oh man, it would mean the world.
15:54It would mean the world to keep them
15:58because I honestly believe I've got big things in this world, in my life to achieve
16:02and this is just the start.
16:04We saw at the press conference a few crosswords.
16:06Does that give you maybe a little more motivation?
16:08Nah man, I've only got my motivation.
16:11My motivation is my dream, is my pursuit of what I want to achieve in life.
16:15Andrew Kane is just an obstacle.
16:17I've got nothing personal with him.
16:19It's just business at the end of the day.
16:21It's just boxing.
16:23Wish you the best of luck.
16:25I don't need it, I'm going to win.
16:39It's going to be a very action-packed, that contest tour.
16:42I don't know what to do with it here, to be quite honest.
16:47Dakers again, opting to stay on the outside.
16:50Picking and poking his way through this one.
16:53Webster sensing it and starting to go forward a little bit more.
16:57Taking the contest to Dakers.
16:59You just need the injection in pace,
17:02generally, in the contest from both boxers.
17:09Good shot, good shot.
17:12Can I ask you one question, Richie?
17:14Here we are approaching halfway.
17:16Has Dakers thrown one real solid jab tonight yet?
17:18I know there have been a couple of good right hands,
17:20but that jab is not functioning at the moment, is it?
17:23No, I think it's just been a puzzling display for me up to now.
17:26We expected to see so much more from Coleman Dakers.
17:30The last contest we know was close.
17:32Everyone agreed it was.
17:34This opportunity has come up to put the record straight.
17:36Started on that back foot again,
17:38fairly negatively.
17:40It's starting to warm up a little bit now,
17:42but we expected much more,
17:44and I think Michael Webster did also.
17:46This is why I think Webster is a bit puzzled, as anyone.
17:49And now he's taking the fight to Dakers.
17:52Let's see how it unfolds,
17:54but I think Webster, like I said,
17:57is probably as puzzled as we are
17:59that Dakers isn't going forward.
18:07Flashes.
18:09I don't propose for a moment he's listening to us,
18:12but one or two little signs
18:14that Dakers is getting the message from somewhere.
18:16That was a bit sharper.
18:18Yes, that's a little bit better.
18:20A little right hand there.
18:25Left foot not happy, though.
18:27That's a bit better.
18:29That's a bit better.
18:31That's a bit better.
18:33That's a bit better.
18:35That's a bit better.
18:37That's a bit better.
18:39That's a bit better.
18:41That's a bit better.
18:43That's a bit better.
18:45Use of the forearm there.
18:50Just giving Webster a few more seconds to recover.
18:53A couple of good shots there from Dakers.
18:55The right hand certainly hit the target.
18:59Much better work now from Dakers.
19:01About time too.
19:03He fell on two of those, Webster,
19:06and that's a knee.
19:10The big breakthrough perhaps for Dakers.
19:13Webster's looked so comfortable for so long
19:15and waiting and waiting.
19:17He pushed it very close to the ten there.
19:19Yes, he did.
19:21But this is more like the solemn Dakers
19:23that we've expected
19:25and we wanted to see.
19:27And that's a good shot also from him with that left hand.
19:29So he feels that the victory's here now for...
19:33A real mood changer.
19:35The crowd suddenly get behind Dakers.
19:37That's what they came to see.
19:39A lot of people excited by that.
19:42We're going to cut away to Steve Bunce
19:43to find out if Steve is excited.
19:45You know what, Paul?
19:47This is one of those fights where it's easy to pick holes in it.
19:49They're not showing a lot of aggression.
19:51They're not letting their hands go fully.
19:53It's a bit of a chess match.
19:55And perhaps sometimes we need to be a bit more respectful.
19:57And then at the same time,
19:59perhaps they're heavyweights and they should just deliver.
20:01Finally, in the fifth round there,
20:03Solomon Dakers got himself half an inch,
20:05two inches closer, let his hands go.
20:07If I've been scoring this fight hand on heart,
20:09I could have had four 10-10 rounds going into the fifth.
20:11That's the only clear round.
20:13He got to him in that round.
20:15He'll get to him again from now on.
20:19Thank you, Steve.
20:21Now, among the very interested
20:23at ringside tonight,
20:25Fraser Clark,
20:27a completely different tack.
20:29What a fight it was
20:31against Fabio Wardley.
20:33Yes, and they sparred many rounds together.
20:36You see Fraser Clark and Solomon Dakers.
20:38They took GB.
20:39They know each other inside out.
20:41And deep down, he'll be supporting Dakers here.
20:44Definitely.
20:46But just to echo what Steve Bunce was saying, Richie,
20:48you know, these two are also
20:50longstanding sparring partners, aren't they?
20:52They know each other.
20:54I understand they're actually quite good mates.
20:56And I just wonder whether that may partially explain
20:59the fact that Dakers really wasn't switched on
21:01for the first three or four rounds.
21:03Maybe so, Paul.
21:05It was a puzzling start for me.
21:07We started pretty slowly and we expected him to be
21:09a little bit more on the front foot.
21:11But he's finally got into gear in that last round.
21:13And as you said,
21:16Michael Webster, he left it really late
21:18to get up, didn't he?
21:20We've seen actual referees literally carry on the count
21:22when a boxer gets up at nine.
21:24But he took the gamble there.
21:26He got away with it.
21:28But it was better from Solomon Dakers in that round,
21:30most definitely.
21:32It's ragging up in the crowd here tonight.
21:34You will hear them off
21:36the Nathan Heaney
21:37massive, making their way in.
21:40A few people in British boxing sell tickets
21:43like Heaney.
22:01Dakers again is a shame,
22:03tentative in the first half of this sixth round.
22:08Webster was definitely hurt in that last round, Paul.
22:11And it showed signs of distress.
22:13So Dakers has got it for me
22:15to step on the gas a little bit
22:17and put Webster under a little bit more pressure.
22:23And try and catch him again.
22:31He'll be too far out there, Dakers.
22:33And get as he gets caught with a
22:34sharp left hand from Webster.
22:36So again, starting the attack
22:38from too far out there, Dakers,
22:40with his chin in the air.
22:42He'll get a little bit closer
22:44before he launches that right hand.
22:50Already well through halfway
22:52in this ten rounder
22:54for the English heavyweight title.
22:57It's hard going
22:59for Solomon Dakers tonight.
23:00And it's Michael Webster
23:02even with the benefit of a knockdown.
23:04But let's remember,
23:06he wouldn't be the first to have a hard night
23:08defending this title.
23:10And then his hand's going out
23:12a little bit more, though, Paul.
23:14That wasn't a bad right hand
23:16delivered from Dakers.
23:18He's lifting the tempo a little bit
23:20towards the end of this round,
23:22so it's better from him.
23:24And again, lagging there
23:26with a good shot, Dakers.
23:28Might catch the judge's eyes
23:30with that.
23:50If you stand and wait to get hit.
23:52No good saying yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:54Because I told Ted every round
23:55You know my mum died a couple of weeks ago.
23:57But I never neglected your training.
23:59Come on.
24:01Right.
24:03Get out there and let your hand.
24:05Every time you catch him,
24:07you hurt him.
24:09And then you stood just pausing.
24:11You're not even breathing that.
24:13I like it.
24:15Well, you're not going to show you're not.
24:17You've got loads in the channel.
24:19Put your hands up.
24:21Get close.
24:23Let your hands go.
24:25Up and down.
24:27Come on, Michael.
24:29Do you know what?
24:31In Hollywood, they pay guys a lot of money
24:33to write scripts like that.
24:35Yeah, absolutely.
24:37It was a real stiff talking to,
24:39that was, wasn't it?
24:42I reckon something similar
24:44might have been said
24:46at the precise same time
24:48to Solomon Dakers in the other corner.
24:50We believe that Dakers
24:52is probably shading it,
24:53the kind of way
24:55that he wanted
24:57to display his ability tonight.
24:59Huge public interest
25:01in the heavyweight division,
25:03even among non-boxing people nowadays.
25:05Every chance you get in the line,
25:07you've got to seize it.
25:09If you don't, somebody else
25:11will win a whole new fan club.
25:16The lead-in seems to be better from Webster.
25:18Dublin will be jabbed.
25:20But the eye-catching shot,
25:21that right hand,
25:23especially from Dakers
25:25when he gets close enough.
25:27That's the one that's doing the damage
25:29and catching the judge's eyes here, Paul.
25:31And again,
25:33good work, good shot.
25:35Solomon Dakers opens up.
25:37Accurate shots in there.
25:39Webster down for the second time.
25:41He struggled to beat the count
25:43the first time round.
25:45Judged it slightly better this time round,
25:47but he's hurt and he's stopped
25:49by Kevin Parker.
25:51He finally looked the part
25:53and he has now erased
25:55Michael Webster
25:57and Question Mark
25:59from his career.
26:01Onwards and upwards from here.
26:03Very slow going indeed
26:05in the first half of the fight.
26:07He got away with that tonight.
26:09He won't when he goes up
26:11through the rankings, that is for sure.
26:13Webster ultimately
26:15is going to send Dennis Power home.
26:17Disappointed, his trainer,
26:19after the rabble-rousing
26:21Dakers obviously got the message
26:23from Max McCracken.
26:25Not that Max is exactly enthused
26:27overall, Richie, and you know him
26:29better than I do, but it is the win
26:31in the rematch that Dakers sought
26:33and by a more convincing route
26:35than first time round.
26:37Yes, much more convincing
26:39towards the end of the contest.
26:41It was a good finish from him.
26:43It took a few rounds for him
26:45to actually get into gear.
26:47He may say that he was just
26:49taking a look at Webster
26:51and getting the job done
26:53and catches him there.
26:55That was a left hook,
26:57that was a cracking shot.
26:59Then the right hand really did the damage
27:01and another left hook that went in
27:03and Webster couldn't recover from that.
27:05So yes, an impressive finish from Dakers,
27:07but it took him a few rounds
27:09before we actually seen this type
27:11of work from him at Paul.
27:13So still lots to learn from
27:15for Dakers.
27:17Only his ninth contest, remember,
27:19but he'll be so pleased to get that win
27:21and the ending was impressive.
27:23Just took him a few rounds
27:25to get warmed up.
