00:00If I can ask you about something that's happening at the NABJ right now, Donald Trump is speaking
00:04to some of the reporters who assembled there and right out of the gates there was what
00:08can best be described as a contentious exchange where the former president said, and I'm asking
00:13this through the lens of someone who represents the president and vice president, not someone
00:16who has to speak as a campaign question.
00:19He says of Kamala Harris, the vice president, she was always of Indian heritage and she
00:23was only promoting Indian heritage, I didn't know she was black until a number of years
00:26ago and she happened to turn black, he said, and now she wants to be known as black.
00:31So I didn't know, is she Indian or is she black?
00:33She is always of, this is unclear, I respect either one, but she obviously doesn't because
00:40she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she went black.
00:44Your response to those comments?
00:48He is a candidate so I'm going to be super careful.
00:50Wait, no, no, no, hold on, hold on.
00:53I have more to say.
00:54I certainly have more to say.
00:58As a person of color, as a black woman who is in this position that is standing before
01:03you at this podium, behind this lectern, what he just said, what you just read out to me
01:08is repulsive, it's insulting, and, you know, no one has any right to tell someone who they
01:17are, how they identify, that is no one's right.
01:21It is someone's own decisions.
01:24It is, I'll add this, only she can speak to her experience.
01:33Only she can speak to what it's like.
01:37She's the only person that can do that.
01:42And I think it's insulting for anybody, it doesn't matter if it's a former leader, a
01:47former president, it is insulting.
01:52And we have to put, she is the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, we have
01:56to put some respect on her name, period.
