00:00Outward Bound was set up not to change lives, but to save them.
00:06In the dark days of 1941, we were losing hundreds of young merchant seamen in the North Atlantic.
00:12Why?
00:13Because they were inexperienced and lacked confidence.
00:16They were simply not strong enough to survive in the water when those ships were torpedoed
00:21from under them.
00:23Outward Bound was designed to give them that confidence.
00:25It was done by facing them with a series of outdoor challenges that brought out the best
00:31in them.
00:32It assured them, in other words, that they were better than they knew.
00:37After the war, it was decided to apply the very same principles for the young people
00:41of the next generation, and the next, and the next.
00:44They may not have had a world war to fight, but the following generations needed every
00:49ounce of confidence they could master as they grew up.
00:53Some of them were lucky.
00:55They had a teacher or mentor who encouraged them to be the best they could be.
00:59But the really lucky ones had Outward Bound.
