00:00Cheers from opposition protesters in Venezuela after toppling a statue of former President
00:05Hugo Chavez, the man who hand-picked Nicolás Maduro as his successor.
00:11The country has been wracked by demonstrations since late Monday as anger spreads over the
00:15election that saw President Maduro secure his third six-year term in power.
00:21It's terrible, a fraud. We won with 70 percent, but they did the same thing to us again. They
00:27stole the election from us again.
00:31It's a fraud. There's been a lot of discontent towards the government. The majority of people
00:36were voting for a change.
00:39Venezuela's National Electoral Council announced Monday that Maduro had been re-elected with
00:4451 percent of the vote, despite opposition candidate Edmundo González claiming to have
00:50won a landslide with over double the number of votes.
00:54Whilst the opposition leaders have urged peaceful protests, Monday saw clashes break
00:58out with National Riot Police, with security forces using tear gas and rubber bullets to
01:03disperse crowds, leaving scores wounded and over 700 people arrested, including one of
01:09the leaders of the opposition. Maduro's defence minister has accused the protesters of staging
01:14a takeover.
01:15A coup d'etat is underway, for which the president, commander-in-chief of the Bolivarian National
01:21Armed Forces, Nicolas Maduro-Moros, has taken the lead to stop it.
01:28Maduro supporters gathered in Caracas as anti-government protests continued both in the capital and
01:33elsewhere in the country.
01:36After years of demonstrations that led nowhere, opposition parties have united behind González
01:41in an attempt to unseat Maduro at the ballot box.
01:45The US and the EU have yet to recognise Maduro's re-election, while neighbouring Brazil and
01:49Colombia have urged authorities to independently verify the results.
