Newcastle United in Tokyo: Behind the scenes at training, Eddie Howe press conference & third kit launch
Transcript
00:00Good morning from Bilbo, I woke up at 5am in the morning, woke up at 5am, just got ready for the day after.
00:09It's been initially 24 hours after the long day, so I'm actually getting a bit of a head start.
00:17I feel a little bit extra and a bit fresh this morning.
00:20I'm looking forward to the day ahead, a lot happening today.
00:23I'm going up to see Eddie Howe and his players in the training session this morning,
00:28and then later on to see the Open this evening.
00:32Then I've got a fresh conference to go and follow with Eddie Howe and his players,
00:36ahead of our game on Wednesday against Urara.
00:40So that's this day, half the time of our stadium, 7pm local time.
00:46It's a bit unique of the world, because it's not really a machine,
00:52it's a kind of machine that we get to use for popularity and the website.
00:58It's a machine that we get to use for popularity and the website.
01:16It's a machine that we get to use for popularity and the website.
01:46It's a machine that we get to use for popularity and the website.
02:16It's a machine that we get to use for popularity and the website.
02:47Come on, come on!
02:55Oh, yes!
03:16Come on, come on!
03:18Come on, come on!
03:20Come on, come on!
03:44No, I think it's somewhere, a place in the world,
03:48that we're probably not going to get an opportunity to come.
03:51We're going to come out here and hopefully get some new fans.
03:55They've been playing some games,
03:57obviously there's only a few weeks now until the start of our season,
04:00so we're trying to ramp up the intensity that we're playing at
04:03and the minutes that we're getting, so they're very excited to be here.
04:06I would say on the training, having previously beaten Germany not long ago,
04:10we've seen a lot more of the training today than we did in Germany.
04:14Because of the running track, it actually allowed us to get quite close to the players,
04:18so I thought that was really good.
04:20I mean, you don't get to see much more than them running about and kicking a ball
04:24for a couple of seconds or whatever, but I thought it was really good to see.
04:28It was, as you mentioned there, a full group, with the exception of three players,
04:32but they're not notable names.
04:34Young lads, were they?
04:35Yeah, Garan Kvall, Alfie Harrison and Cathal Heffernan, I think that's how you pronounce it.
04:40Garan Kvall didn't travel.
04:42Sorry?
04:43Harrison Ashby, who has travelled, not involved in training this morning,
04:47or at least the 15-minute session.
04:49I'm glad you corrected us there.
04:50Yeah, but Garan Kvall was one of them.
04:51That segues us nicely into one of your questions about the players who didn't travel,
04:55who were unconfirmed why they didn't travel.
04:59Obviously, we've got Kieran Trivia.
05:01Anthony Gordon, who we knew weren't travelling due to international and extended break,
05:06but Garan Kvall, Alex Murphy and the other player, Joe White.
05:11It's all up here.
05:12It's all the heat it's getting at the moment.
05:14We're getting stuff.
05:15Yes, we're sweating.
05:16But, yeah, they're not travelling.
05:18And we thought it could be loan-related, potentially, but Eddie Howe, injuries.
05:22Yeah, all injured, so they're not here.
05:26I'd imagine, probably for Garan Kvall, it'll be an absolute banger that he goes out on loan.
05:31I think Eddie Howe already hinted that previously anyway, but that's not why he's here.
05:35He's swollen to his...
05:37To his knee?
05:38I think it was either his knee or his ankle.
05:40His leg.
05:41Terrible.
05:42Terrible.
05:43Not promoting facts here, but it was either one of the two.
05:45Liam's not here.
05:46Someone's got to do the waffle.
05:48Yeah, so Joe White, I think it was a problem with his back, I think.
05:53Yes.
05:54And Alex Murphy.
05:55Hip.
05:56Hip.
05:57As you remember, perhaps.
05:58I remember it, because the woman who was translating had to ask Eddie Howe all over again, didn't she?
06:03Yeah, my questions caused a few translations.
06:05Eddie Howe wanted a translation.
06:08Eddie Howe was translating my question, and his answer back to this lady.
06:12Yeah, they're not present, but as I said there, I think it was pretty much a full house in terms of senior players there, which was good.
06:19Lloyd Kelly, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock.
06:22Obviously, they missed the whole game.
06:23They trained.
06:24One of the questions I asked Eddie Howe was, when will we see them?
06:27And I think we'll probably see them for the second game of the week against...
06:30Yokohama.
06:31Marinowski.
06:32I like your pronunciation of that one, but that was my two questions in the press conference.
06:37I know I had a little bit of a huddle with Eddie Howe, which will come out now.
06:39Much appreciated.
06:40In that press conference, I think I mentioned a couple of my lines there.
06:43One of yours, questions, Bruno Gimaraes?
06:45Yes, I had a triple hit at Eddie Howe on Bruno.
06:50Just asked how pleased he was to see him back, and obviously pleased.
06:56He said the quality of the group has increased significantly,
06:59and having sort of a bare-bones squad in the previous couple of weeks
07:03to now having the likes of Bruno back, Fabian Scheer, Martin Dvorak, Miguel Almiron,
07:07just bolsters the squad, raises the quality,
07:09and now we're starting XI for the upcoming friendly games.
07:12It starts to look a whole lot stronger with Bruno in it.
07:15Then I also asked about the release clause situation.
07:17Glad that's put to bed.
07:19And Eddie Howe said, look, it never really entered his thinking.
07:23He'd be surprised if it had had Bruno's thinking as well.
07:26And then I also asked, because I'm interested to know,
07:29time-sensitive release clauses are sometimes very time-sensitive,
07:34sometimes they're time-sensitive on an annual basis.
07:37So it can come back next June or things like that.
07:41So I wanted some answer from Eddie Howe, was that the case?
07:45And he said he doesn't think it's the case, but he's not 100% certain.
07:49So was it a question for Eddie Howe?
07:51It's probably a question for someone above Eddie Howe, if we're being honest.
07:54But Eddie Howe, not 100% certain whether Bruno's release clause
07:58will come into effect in the summer again.
08:01So, yeah, no news really.
08:04Two-footing Eddie on the transfer.
08:06He doesn't like players' names being put to him.
08:09Made him squirm.
08:11I didn't do it intentionally, Eddie, I'm sorry.
08:13But we like to know these things.
08:15The questions you've got to ask, Jordan.
08:17There's been a lot of noise around AC Milan defender Malik Chao,
08:21and that's how he pronounced it because I watched a video of him pronounce his own name.
08:25So it's the first time I've got a pronunciation right, like a name.
08:29Hats off, Jordan.
08:31You can't say name, but you can say Malik Chao.
08:34Yeah, I've got the pronunciation right now, I can't actually say it.
08:37Yeah, so I asked about him, there's been a lot of noise from mostly it,
08:40to be honest, about the player.
08:42It's very one-sided, by the way.
08:44And Eddie Howe...
08:46The agent played it down yesterday as well, just for some context.
08:49His agent played down any sort of reports that a deal had been agreed.
08:54There's talks that it happened,
08:56but I think that's, to our understanding, that's as far as anything's gone.
09:02Yeah, so I asked him, and I thought it was quite an interesting answer
09:05because I said there's a lot of noise from Italy about Malik Chao.
09:09What can you say on that? Do you like the player?
09:11And his answer was, no, there's no update.
09:13So was that a little hint from Eddie that they are chasing it?
09:17I don't know, I'll be honest.
09:19I don't know currently where that deal is at.
09:22But then I thought another little hint from Eddie Howe.
09:26Well, he pretty much admitted that he liked the player.
09:29Called him a very good player, so he was fully aware of him.
09:33Obviously, he came against Newcastle in the Champions League,
09:36the San Siro didn't play against Newcastle, it's St James' Park.
09:39I remember I played really well that day alongside the Caio Tamori.
09:43Usually with Eddie Howe, when you put a player to him that is total nonsense,
09:47he tends to bat it down and says there's no truth in that,
09:50whereas he's left the Malik Chao conversation open.
09:54So for me, that probably suggests that there is interest, genuine interest there.
10:00Going to the kit launch event at, what's it called?
10:03It's Eurosports in Tokyo.
10:05Ginorsa.
10:07Yeah, that's where it's based, in Tokyo.
10:10The new third kit's being announced.
10:12You might have seen a teased new club crest.
10:14Did I say new club crest?
10:15It's an old club crest, which was actually launched in 1983,
10:19the same year Newcastle were last in Tokyo for three seasons.
10:24So whether that was intentional or not, it's certainly interesting.
10:29And people can correct me in the comments if the specifics of 1983 are not completely correct.
10:39That's my knowledge, that's what I'm done with.
10:43So yeah, that's it.
11:08.
