Swimming training canceled for a second day over Seine water quality

Paris Olympics organizers cancelled the triathlon swimming training session in the Seine river for a second day on Monday, July 29, 24 hours before the men's race, after heavy rain late last week increased both pollution levels and the speed of the current.

Fifty-five triathletes are scheduled to line up at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, on a floating pontoon next to the Pont Alexandre III and dive into the Seine, marking the first time athletes have competed in the river at an Olympics since 1900.

A final call on whether Tuesday's race will go ahead will be made at 4 a.m., based on samples from the river taken 24 hours before, he added.

Organizers have set aside Aug. 2 as a contingency day for the individual races and Aug. 6 for the mixed relay in case water quality levels do not improve in time.

A swimmable Seine is a key legacy Games organizers aim to leave behind for Paris residents.

France has invested some $1.4 billion in new wastewater infrastructure to cut the amounts of sewage flowing into the river, and city authorities have announced plans for three swimming sites to open to the public by June next year.

00:25There it is.
00:54Yes, as you can see, there has been quite a lot of rain, including during the opening
01:03ceremony in the last couple of days.
01:08But we are monitoring very closely, the level of the sun is going down rapidly, the weather
01:13forecast is bright and shiny, especially for today, it's going to be hot.
01:19So we are confident that we will be able to hold, even though we cancelled the familiarisation
01:23this morning, the competition tomorrow and Wednesday, and we still have a contingency
01:30plan that is in place for Friday, just in case.
01:35But as far as we are concerned, we are still confident to be able to hold the competition
01:41tomorrow.
01:42With respect to your questions about the flow of the river, we measure it by cubic metre
01:50per second.
01:52Definitely it's been much higher than it is normally during this time of the year,
01:56but the guidelines, which is one metre per second to be able to hold the competition,
02:05is to be met, so we don't have an issue in respect to the current.
02:17We have to wait, and we don't do fiction scenarios.
02:24We are very respectful of the athletes, and they are the heart of the Olympic Games.
02:30We've done everything we could in relation with the International Federation, but also
02:35with the public authorities to achieve the goal of having the swimmable sand, and it's
02:40going to be a fantastic legacy for later, and we're still optimistic that we can hold
02:46the competition within the Seine River.
02:48We have a contingency plan, so we hope that tomorrow morning, when they're welcome,
02:54they'll be able to participate, and that's how it stands right now.
03:46I will not give you any figure right now.
04:01We're still measuring things as we go.
04:03We get different points and different measure points throughout the day.
04:06We also have a tool that is called a colliminder, which is some kind of a tool that anticipates
04:13what is going to be coming, and the colliminder is going down, so that's why we say that
04:21we are optimistic for tomorrow, but a statement will be made throughout the day.
04:25I think so.
04:27I think we have a communication later on today in that respect to give you the trend.
04:37We make the call at 4am.
04:38Yes.
04:40Okay, we're going to go gentleman here, then we're going to come to us to Rachel over there.
