00:00Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid, training camps for NFL, of course, off and
00:07running with the Hall of Fame game coming and the NFL preseason beginning late next
00:11week.
00:12Carrington Harrison has got a great gig.
00:15It's covering and talking about the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:18And Carrington, I don't know how long you've been doing this for, but if you were doing
00:21this 15, 20 years ago, it would have not been nearly as much fun as it has been over the
00:26past 10 years.
00:28But when you're covering and talking about a winner, like you have been with the Chiefs
00:32every single season, it's just a matter of asking, can they get back to where they were?
00:36And I guess that's probably a good place to start.
00:39Thanks for coming on the show.
00:40Yeah, absolutely.
00:41I mean, that absolutely is a great place to start.
00:44I'm born and raised in Kansas City, so trust me, there's not much you're going to be able
00:48to throw at me in terms of disappointment.
00:50I was here for the Matt Castle days.
00:51I was here for the Alex Smith days.
00:53They had a playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts in which they lost 9 to 7 and they missed
00:58three field goals when I was a kid.
01:00They played Peyton Manning in a postseason game and they did not force a punt back in
01:042003.
01:05So, I know all about Chiefs heartbreak, sir.
01:08Yeah, no, definitely there and even before that in the 80s too.
01:12Okay, so let's take a look at some of the players that left and you tell me if any of
01:18them, and naturally this is going to happen with a really good team.
01:20Some of these players get overpaid, as you know, Carrington, to go to other teams.
01:24I think the one name that stands out the most, which I guess is surprising, I guess just
01:28from a pure football standpoint, is that Lajarius Sneed is no longer there after how good he
01:32was with the Chiefs.
01:34But contractually speaking, there's only so many players you can pay.
01:37I guess that would be my fair assessment there.
01:39How about you?
01:40Yeah, I think that's a perfect assessment, at least of this team.
01:44Lajarius Sneed was one of the better corners last year in the National Football League,
01:48but I think you came to the point, especially with Trent McDuffie's emergence, turning
01:52into an all-pro caliber player that you're going to have to make a decision on one of
01:56them.
01:58You're not going to be able to pay both of them market value.
02:00So how do you want to build your team?
02:02Corner is also a position that the Chiefs have developed really well.
02:05I mean, they did it with Charverius Ward.
02:07They let him go.
02:08He went to San Francisco, became a pro bowl caliber player.
02:11Lajarius Sneed was the replacement for Charverius Ward.
02:14Sneed obviously turned into a very good player.
02:16So now we'll see guys like Jalen Watson, Joshua Williams.
02:19Those are going to be the two main culprits who are pegged with the responsibility of
02:24replacing Lajarius Sneed.
02:25Let's also not forget that after Bill Belichick, the Chiefs might have the best defensive coordinator
02:31over the last 30 years in the NFL with Steve Spagnuolo.
02:35He won championships with the Giants, and now he has won three separate championships
02:38with Kansas City.
02:39So we're talking about a defensive mastermind that is going to scheme up this defense that
02:44returns, aside from Lajarius Sneed, they return basically almost everybody else.
02:49Yeah, and the Chiefs, while their offense is talked about a lot, their defense was really
02:53the calling card.
02:54It was the calling card for all of last season up until the playoffs.
02:58And I know they've tried to make some subtle changes to the offense, but it felt like this
03:02offseason for the first time, they made some significant changes on offense, adding some
03:08potentially helpful players instead of just recycling old receivers by getting Marquise
03:13Brown from Arizona.
03:15So that was an addition.
03:16Naturally, some of these other players you see there, Irv Smith, Matt Araiza, who knows
03:19how they'll factor in.
03:21But then they draft Xavier Worthy also.
03:24And if you're just playing the numbers game, I assume that between Brown and Worthy, if
03:29one of them really makes a nice step, then the Chiefs accomplished what they wanted to
03:34in the offseason.
03:35Craig, I'm starting to think that you can take my job.
03:38You and I have the exact same opinions on the Kansas City Chiefs.
03:41I mean, last year...
03:42I'm just guessing.
03:43Yeah, no, last year they had a bottom five wide receiver group.
03:46I mean, we all saw it.
03:47We saw the opening week game against the Lions, a big drop from Canary is Tony in the Bronx.
03:51Those games, Sky Moore with a couple of big drops, MVS had a couple of big drops.
03:56To let you know where they are now, I think a lot of people would have said that MVS was
04:00in the conversation to be their one.
04:02Not all the team signed a one-year deal somewhere else.
04:05Sky Moore is in danger of missing this team.
04:07Canary is Tony.
04:08They're talking about switching him positions to running back.
04:11So that'll let you know where they were last year.
04:13I'm 100% with you.
04:14When you factor in Isaiah Pacheco in the run game, you've got Travis Kelsey, Rasheed Rice,
04:21who I know had some off-the-field issues, but I don't think he's going to be suspended,
04:24at least not to start the season.
04:26And then the two additions that you named, I mean, you got five really solid offensive
04:31weapons in last year for an offense that really lacked punch.
04:34It didn't have a whole lot of sizzle last year.
04:37You certainly have that when you bring in the fastest player at the combine in Xavier
04:40Worthy and a guy in Hollywood Brown who was at a previous 1,000-yard season.
04:45Yeah, it just feels like they finally, outside of Juju Smith-Schuster's and those kind of
04:51recycled receivers, they finally took a step forward in trying to fix this.
04:54And by the way, thanks for mentioning that with Rice, because that's what I was going
04:57to ask you.
04:58I don't know what the status is there.
05:00All right, so no team's ever won three Super Bowls in a row.
05:03This is what they're going to try to accomplish this season.
05:07And very specifically, you're now looking at Patrick Mahomes chasing down some of the
05:11legendary quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, Tom Brady with seven titles, Montana
05:16with four.
05:17I mean, four is really that huge number that Mahomes can make that big jump.
05:22I suppose, I guess, eventually you would assume that this would happen, but I'm from a day
05:28and age where you just didn't know if Manning was ever going to win a Super Bowl or Dan
05:32Marino was ever going to win a Super Bowl.
05:34And so you just never know when these things come and go, but I would assume at some point
05:37Mahomes is going to have his shot at four.
05:39Yeah, I mean, you would have to think so right now.
05:42I mean, it's funny because on one side, I think history tells you to pick somebody else
05:46because no one has done this before.
05:48But then you really struggle.
05:49Like, who are you going to pick in the AFC?
05:51There's a lot of good worthy contenders.
05:53I mean, Baltimore is a really good team.
05:55I really like Cincinnati.
05:56If they can get back healthy, everybody is on the Houston Texans bandwagon heading into
06:00this season.
06:01But it's funny to say for a team that won the Super Bowl the last two years, I actually
06:06think this could be the best version of the Chiefs over the last three seasons.
06:10You mentioned the defense earlier, Craig.
06:12They were second in scoring defense last year.
06:15So think about the Chiefs last year with their offense, with Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelsey
06:19and Andy Reid.
06:20They were 17th in points scored last year.
06:23So they get back to a top 10 offense, and I think they're going to have a top 10 defense.
06:27This team has as good of a chance as any team in the National Football League to do this.
06:32And you haven't asked me this question, but it's related to it.
06:35I think it's going to be really difficult for Mahomes to have the argument, I'm the
06:38greatest quarterback of all time.
06:40You lost to Brady in the Super Bowl.
06:42You lost to Brady in the AFC Championship game, and that's probably going to be the
06:45tiebreaker.
06:46But, I mean, there's one thing that Tom Brady has never done.
06:49He never won three Super Bowls in a row.
06:51If you want to be able to make that claim of, I'm the best quarterback of all time,
06:56you probably need five rings and maybe you win three in a row.
06:59I mean, that would maybe give you a case, and Mahomes is probably going to have all
07:02of the records.
07:03He's going to throw most touchdowns, most yards, all of those things.
07:07That would probably be the pathway to making the argument of, I'm the greatest quarterback
07:10of all time.
07:12Carrington, awesome analysis.
07:13Thanks again for coming on Newswire.
07:14Talk soon.
07:15I appreciate you guys.
