00:00We'll keep thinking about Firestone.
00:06Exuberant spirits here in St. Louis for both sides.
00:10The Cardinals are leading, the Cowboys are coming on.
00:13There's the Dallas scoring drive, 10 plays, 63 yards,
00:17and finally, the field goal by Efren Herrera.
00:20So it is Cardinals 17 and the Cowboys 16,
00:23529 to go in the third quarter.
00:27Efren Herrera will tee it up and kick it off.
00:30Standing deep for the Cardinals, the ever-present Terry Metcalf.
00:34He has Jerry Lattin to his right, number 32,
00:37and to his left, he has Wayne Morris, number 24.
00:42So the special team for the Cowboys,
00:44flexing their muscles, and we're about ready.
00:47One point, separating the two, the Cardinals on top.
00:55Herrera, no knuckleball this time,
00:57and it's Metcalf at the 5, to the 20, 25, 30, 35,
01:02rolling across the 40-yard line,
01:04and the man who hit him was number 57, Bruce Huthert, H-U-T-H-E-R.
01:10CBS Sports Spectacular will feature live coverage
01:14of the 59th running of the Jockey Club Gold Cup,
01:17$300,000 purse, the Chunichi Cup,
01:21the acclaimed competition Nadia Comaneci and Nelly Kim,
01:24and the world's strongest men.
01:26That's all coming up next Saturday, 4.30 p.m. Eastern
01:29on the CBS Sports Spectacular.
01:31And I wouldn't miss it.
01:32Nadia Comaneci, and that Kim girl's pretty, marvelous.
01:36Okay, first and ten, and Hart's at the controls on the Cardinal 37.
01:42Fits back to Metcalf, he slipped, trying to cut away from Bob Brunig,
01:46and down he went, and Brunig just fell on him.
01:48It was almost criminal what Tom Henderson did to a would-be blocker that time.
01:52Gracious, just totally destroyed one of the backs coming out of the backfield.
01:58That Henderson's one heck of an athlete there.
02:00Drafted him number one from what, Langston?
02:02Langston.
02:03Yeah, surprised everybody, but he's been a surprise.
02:06Little school out of Oklahoma.
02:13On the Cardinal 34-yard line, Morrison Metcalf, the running back,
02:19and Hart looking to the left over the middle, got Mel Gray.
02:24So Mel Gray takes it, tackled by Benny Barnes and Cliff Harris.
02:32That Mel Gray will put you on the corner of your seat, too.
02:34Just about a five-yard pattern downfield, angling in about a 45-degree angle,
02:38a little slant pattern, right in that line back at a clear.
02:41You see that he has cleared, and Barnes in on the coverage there.
02:45Good job of coverage, good pass.
02:46They're trying to strip that ball for him, both Cliff Harris and Benny Barnes.
02:50Tried to take it away, but he wouldn't give.
02:52First and 10 on the Cardinal 48-yard line, as Hart now trying to generate a drive of his own.
03:00Wayne Morrison motioned to the left.
03:02There's a give to Metcalf, but he ran into a crowd,
03:04and still bulled his way out to just about midfield.
03:09Bob Brunig, Larry Cole, Harvey Martin, and Randy White.
03:13And I just made a terrible mistake.
03:15I mentioned the name of number 63 of the Dallas Cowboys, Larry Cole.
03:20Oh, boy.
03:22You're not supposed to mention him.
03:23Nobody's supposed to mention him.
03:24Tell the people why.
03:26There he is.
03:27We have destroyed his whole life.
03:28Nobody's ever heard of Larry Cole before.
03:30He tries to be Mr. Obscurity.
03:32I'll tell you about the zero club he formed a little later.
03:35Second and eight from midfield.
03:37Three-nineteen.
03:42Hart on a draw to Metcalf looking for running room, and he is dragged down behind,
03:46and he is picked up by Randy White.
03:49Zero club is a club formed in Dallas by the players for people that have no personality,
03:54that never get any publicity, have no flair, have absolutely no charisma.
03:59Pat Tumay and Blaine Nye and Larry Cole were first started at.
04:03They were all members of the thing because nobody ever heard of them.
04:06They said, Tumay's statement about Cole said he is the perfect zero.
04:11Larry Cole, we might as well finish him off.
04:13Six-five, 260, 30 years old, went to Hawaii.
04:16He has spent ten silent years in the NFL.
04:22Third and eight from midfield.
04:23Uh-oh.
04:24Almost a mix-up in the backfield.
04:28Kyle just missed him, and down it goes.
04:30Aaron Kyle came out of nowhere.
04:33Number 25 just missed getting Hart, and Hart just slammed the ball down into the rug.
04:38Watch 25.
04:39There is a blitz you almost never see, a cornerback blitz.
04:43You see the back there.
04:44Steve Jones, uh, excuse me, Wayne Morris not picking him up there.
04:47Very alert.
04:48Look at what Jim Hart does.
04:51He just absolutely grounded that ball, and it was a wise thing for him to do.
04:54There's Kyle right there, 25.
04:56There's Cliff Harris also blitzing.
04:58They sit in everybody.
04:59And there's old Mr. Cole.
05:01You know what their motto for their club is?
05:03What is that?
05:04One for none and all for naught.
05:06All for naught.
05:07Well, Terry Joyce has his punt, and a fair catch by Butch Johnson in a crowd.
05:12It was standing room only down there.
05:14Justin crossed the 25-yard line.
05:17With two minutes and 24 seconds to go in the third quarter, Cardinals 17, Dallas 16.
05:28Don Correale puzzled about his kicking game as the Cardinals put it in play first and 10 on their own 27-yard line.
05:35Staubach to Anthony Dorsett.
05:37And he gets out across the 35-yard line and bulls his way to the 40.
05:43Before we look at Dorsett again, we should tell you that last punt by Terry Joyce went 23 yards.
05:50And his punts today, it went 31, 27, 33, and 23.
05:55He had one block.
05:56And that could be a most important factor in the game.
05:59It could very well be.
06:01Could very well be before this day is over.
06:04So first and 10 as Dorsett carried it to the 40-yard line.
06:08Anthony in there with Robert Newhouse.
06:16And a handoff to Dorsett.
06:18The Cardinals trying to bring him down, and they can't.
06:21And they have to have a team meeting before they can get him down across the 45.
06:26Look at that, brother.
06:28Moves, speed, acceleration, he's got it all.
06:31Well, I guess that's why he had such a successful career pitch.
06:35Watch how he bounces back against the flow this time.
06:38Sitting in the back to the right, he goes back against the flow of the pursuit.
06:42And the rest of it's just Tony Dorsett.
06:46He has now carried the ball five times.
06:49Are you ready?
06:50For 112 yards, because he picked up 77 and one great gulp for a touchdown.
06:57Second and three on the Cowboy 47.
07:02Golden Richards in a slot right inside Drew Pearson.
07:05Stop by play action fake to Dorsett.
07:08Setting up and looking.
07:09Under a rush, throws it away.
07:13Oh, they're not going to let him get away with that one.
07:16Mike Dawson and Bob Bell were all over him.
07:20And all Starbuck did was throw it to Clayton County.
07:24There is nobody in the area.
07:26Absolutely nobody in the area.
07:27That's the second time today that Roger's gotten by with that.
07:31The crowd doesn't like it.
07:33Cory Ell certainly doesn't like it.
07:35And it certainly appeared to be a most obvious call.
07:39You take a look.
07:39Now, if you can find anybody in that area, you just call me up.
07:43Because I sure couldn't.
07:45Roger Trapp back there.
07:46They're not going to let him get outside.
07:47You see Bell containing him there.
07:49Now, where is the man in that area?
07:50I did not see him.
07:51I saw a lineman over there.
07:53So it is third and three in an angry crowd here.
07:57The ball on the Dallas 47-yard line.
08:01Richards is left.
08:02Drew Pearson right.
08:04And Roger fumbles.
08:06It's picked up by Charlie Davis.
08:09He's to the 10, to the 5, and scores.
08:13Charlie Davis out at TCU.
08:17There's a flag down on the 5-yard line.
08:20And Mike Dawson was in a fight with the official.
08:24Someone pushed and it was official.
08:26And he turned to swing at him.
08:29Charlie Davis is from a college in Texas.
08:33And he's going to try and beat Dallas.
08:35What a play.
08:36Oh, buddy.
08:37That's a big break.
08:39A huge break.
08:44Retribution.
08:47So after Roger Starbuck was able to unload the play,
08:51watch this one now as he unloads to the opposing player.
08:55There you see Mike Dawson, number 73.
08:58Follow him a little bit.
08:58A good rush there.
08:59Who was that on the outside?
09:00Was that...
09:03Oh, yeah.
09:04Zip, zip.
09:04John, zip.
09:06The kick is good.
09:11And another fight starting as Charlie...
09:15Cliff Harris arguing with J.V. Cain.
09:20Boy, they are simmering now.
09:22But Charlie Davis, an electrifying touchdown.
09:42And you want to start real quick.
09:44You can trust the Delco.
09:46Delco.
09:47Delco Freedom Battery.
09:49They've got the stuff.
09:51When the starting's tough, you can trust the Delco.
09:54Thanks, Delco.
09:55Delco Freedom Battery.
09:57Delco.
09:58Thanks, Delco.
10:02When do you say, Budweiser?
10:06After a good bout on the lay for the water ski.
10:09In about two minutes.
10:11And that's about, what, 120 seconds?
10:13When do you say, Budweiser?
10:17When I'm fishing and when I finish fishing.
10:19Right after I finish painting this van.
10:20Whenever I can.
10:21On a hot day like today.
10:23Before I go to bed.
10:24When you say, Budweiser.
10:27Budweiser.
10:29You've said it all.
10:34Charlie Davis, out of Texas Christian University,
10:37and slightly out of his mind in joy and glory,
10:41as the Cardinals have scored to take a 24-16 lead.
10:46Standing deep puts Johnson, Larry Brinson.
10:51Bakken will kick from the 35.
10:54The Dallas Cowboys, frankly, look a little stunned.
10:56That happened so suddenly.
11:00So Bakken is ready.
11:0136 seconds to go in the third quarter.
11:05The kick will be handled by Butch Johnson on the 8 to the 20.
11:11Into a crowd and down at the 30-yard line,
11:14a fellow named Eric Williams, number 55,
11:17just hurled himself at the wedge and jammed it up.
11:21But let's take another look at the big play and Davis' touchdown.
11:25Make your own minds up on this, you Dallas fans,
11:27if this callback's arm had gone forward.
11:29If so, it was a bad call by the official.
11:31He's in the tip of passing and his arm is moving forward.
11:35He shakes it loose right there,
11:36and it looked like to me that it was a very questionable call.
11:43So it is first and 10 for Dallas on their own 30-yard line.
11:48Dorsett is back in there with Newhouse.
11:51Play action fake, and he's dragged down by Mike Dawson,
11:55and it came out of nowhere.
11:59Look at those cargoes.
12:00They are charged up, aren't they?
12:03They are charged up.
12:07You can be sure that Roger Stolbeck and his boys will have him back mobilized again.
12:11He won't let it get out of control.
12:14Just came from.
12:15He shot the gap in there.
12:18It is second and 16 on the Cowboy 24.
12:2215 seconds left to go in the third quarter.
12:25The Cardinals 24, the Cowboys 16.
12:30Stolbeck to the right side to Butch Johnson.
12:32Lee Nelson pushes him out of bounds at the 39-yard line of Dallas.
12:38It is right on a borderline as to whether it's a first down or not.
12:43Roger's bringing his troops back, though.
12:46Aren't you seeing a good football game today?
12:48You're getting your money's worth today, aren't you?
12:50Look at that.
12:53It is just shy of the first down, which is another reason why they're chanting.
12:57Third and one on the Dallas 39.
13:02With two seconds left to go in the third quarter.
13:0524-16 St. Louis.
13:09Pearson wide right.
13:11Dorsett is in there with Newhouse.
13:14Salde and Dupre are the tight ends.
13:17Dorsett.
13:18And he has gotten the first down as he exploded by Mike Dawson.
13:25So that's the end of the third quarter.
13:27And what a quarter it has been.
13:29The St. Louis Cardinals 24, the Dallas Cowboys 16.
13:41One step closer.
13:45One step closer.
13:48One step closer.
13:51That's what Exxon people say.
13:53One step closer.
13:55At the end of every day.
13:58Exxon's dedicated to finding energy for you.
14:03Energy for a strong America.
14:11Hi. Ever need to run a car fast?
14:13Watch.
14:14Hertz, number one club number 21586.
14:17Arrive in San Diego at 2 p.m. on RAL flight 9.
14:21Returning it there tomorrow.
14:22Okay, thanks.
14:24That's all there is to it.
14:26When you're in the number one club, nobody makes renting a car faster or easier than the superstar.
14:30Even before you get there, your car is pre-assigned, your forms filled out.
14:35So rent a Ford Fast from Hertz, the superstar, and rent a car.
14:40Don Coriel spent three years with the Army paratroopers,
14:44and he is high-flying today with his bird.
14:47Used to be a little boxer, too.
14:49Used to box some in the service.
14:51So Coriel, a most emotional coach right now, exhorting his team to hold on.
14:56Fourth quarter.
14:57The Cardinals lead by eight.
14:59Dallas with the ball first and ten on their own 43.
15:03Dorsett, deep man out of the eye.
15:06Staubach to Dorsett.
15:08Look at him.
15:12And he gets across midfield, and I don't know how.
15:15He got by Neels.
15:17Zook almost had a shot at him.
15:20The defensive end on the right side was blown out by Newhouse.
15:23So Anthony Dorsett picked up a couple.
15:26You did indeed pick that up.
15:28Watch the block of number 44, Bob Newhart, on the linebacker.
15:31Kick it outside on Kenny Reeves.
15:33And look at the acceleration right here.
15:35How gracious.
15:37You know, you can't make me believe that an offensive line won't block a little bit harder
15:41for a guy with his ability.
15:43With Tony Dorsett's ability and explosiveness,
15:45if they give him that daylight one time, he can take it all the way to the end zone.
15:48And he's done it once today when he broke one for 77 yards in a touchdown.
15:53So it is second down, one to go.
15:57The ball is now in Cardinal territory at the 48.
16:02Puts Johnson wide left.
16:04Jay Soildy in there at tight end along with Billy Joe Dupree.
16:08And here comes Newhouse.
16:10And he fights his way for the first down.
16:12He got across the 45-yard line handily.
16:16Burton Lawless doing a pretty good job at throwing a block number 66.
16:20I'll say he is.
16:22He's playing himself a good football game today.
16:24Getting his little chance to get back in that starting lineup again.
16:27Herbert Scott, of course, had a groin injury, I believe it was,
16:30and he wouldn't be playing any today.
16:33Burton used to be a regular for the Cowboys and would like to get back in there again.
16:38Fourth quarter score, Denver 23, Kansas City nothing.
16:42First and 10, Dallas.
16:44On the Cardinal 43-yard line, Drew Pearson wide right.
16:48A play-action fake to Dorsett.
16:50And Staubach going for the bomb to Pearson.
16:53He can't get it.
16:55Lee Nelson for the umpteenth time.
16:58The unknown soldier made the play, but there's a flag down there in the end zone.
17:02Shades of Minnesota a few years ago in desperation when Roger Staubach cranked it up.
17:08It'll be pass interference against Lee Nelson, who is a disconsolate figure.
17:14Here it is.
17:15And you'll see the interference.
17:17He lost sight of the ball altogether and just went ahead and played the man.
17:20That is obvious pass interference by Lee Nelson.
17:23That is a 43-yard penalty going against the Cardinals.
17:28And, of course, earlier there was a big penalty, a 42-yard penalty.
17:37The ball is on the Cardinal one-yard line.
17:4143-yard penalty.
17:44Well, Ben Scully, what do we expect now?
17:47We've seen a little bit of everything today.
17:49The whole textbook. It's first and goal from the one.
17:58Newhouse.
18:01Robert Newhouse stopped by a nest of Cardinals.
18:08It'll be second and goal from the one.
18:11It is 24 to 16 Cardinals.
18:13They lead by eight with 1341 to go.
18:17Watch the goal line stand of the Cardinals.
18:20Mike Dawson, all that crowd.
18:22Bob Bell in there, Kenny Reeves, everybody jamming it up in there.
18:29So, second and goal from the one.
18:32Newhouse and Dorsett.
18:38Dorsett.
18:42What a goal.
18:44Anthony Dorsett goes flying through for his second touchdown of the day.
18:48His fourth touchdown of the year.
18:51And, of course, the crowd still angry over the pass interference call that set it up.
18:56Well, sir, they traded their place in the draft with Seattle.
18:59Gave up three number two draft picks, but I don't think they're even a little bit disappointed.
19:04Tony Dorsett has been all that he was acclaimed to be.
19:07Over the top.
19:09Did you notice how they hit him and it didn't even shake him?
19:11Great balance.
19:12Efron Herrera now trying to make it just a one-point deficit.
19:15The kick is good.
19:18So, the score with 13 minutes and 15 seconds left to go in the ballgame.
19:24The Cardinals 24 and the Cowboys 23.
19:28We'll return to Bush Memorial Stadium after this word from your local station.
19:39Holy mackerel.
19:41If you're taking Valium, you could end up taking a bad trip.
19:45Find out why on 60 Minutes tonight on CBS.
20:24We'll be right back.
20:55Well, it's seatbelts and crash helmets for a capacity crowd at Bush Stadium in St. Louis.
21:01The Cardinals 24, the Cowboys 23.
21:0413 minutes and 15 seconds left to go in the ballgame.
21:08The Dallas drive, eight plays, 70 yards.
21:11The key, a 43-yard pass interference penalty that gave them first and goal on the one.
21:17So, one point separates them, the Cardinals leading.
21:22And Efron Herrera ready to kick it off.
21:26Another tough ball to handle.
21:28Deflected, bobbled by Jerry Smith, picked up by Terry Metcalf.
21:33And Metcalf gets it out to the 15 to the 18-yard line.
21:37Jerry Smith, who has played 15 years for the Cardinals, got his hand on the ball and couldn't hold it.
21:43However, Metcalf was able to get on it and make it.
21:46I'm saying Jerry Jackie Smith.
21:48Jackie Smith, that's right.
21:50The all-time NFL tight end.
21:52I'll say he is, too.
21:55He's quite a competitor, too.
21:58Doesn't like not being a starter for the Cardinals, but what's he going to do?
22:01J.B. King's doing the job.
22:04First and 10 from the 18, now for the Cardinals.
22:0813 minutes to go.
22:12In motion, Mel Gray.
22:17That's Metcalf going to pass.
22:19Now he's going to run.
22:22And he's to the 20 and almost to the 25.
22:25Is that remarkable?
22:26Can he take a busted play and make the most of it?
22:29He could have lost 5, 10 yards on that one, brought it right on back, and picked up about 4 or 5.
22:35Oh, he's excited.
22:37He gets the maximum mileage out of it.
22:40There's a block over there, or a tempted block, that just did not do anything to D.D. Lewis.
22:45Look at the moves here now.
22:48Just scrambles to keep his balance and gets about 5 or 6 for him.
22:52Second down and 3 from the Cardinal 25-yard line.
22:56They lead by 1, 12 1⁄2 left.
22:59And it's Wayne Morris being dragged down by D.D. Lewis, shy of the 20-yard line.
23:05D.D. Lewis is another fellow who understudied a Dallas great by the name of Chuck Howley.
23:11And now D.D. is the man on the spot, 9-year veteran out of Mississippi State.
23:16Saw Chuck Howley in Dallas last week, and he looks great.
23:22And meanwhile, Gary Joyce.
23:25You keep on practicing until you get it right.
23:27Oh, that boy.
23:28He might be faced with a bunch of hungry lions in a moment.
23:32It is 3rd and 9 from the 19.
23:42Hart, under some pressure, flips it out, and it's caught right on the 29-yard line by Ike Harris.
23:52He caught and rolled. We'll take another look. It's a first down.
23:56Let's see if he came up off the ground that time like he might be hurt from the ball falling on that ball.
24:01Let's take a look at that, Ike Harris. I believe he did.
24:05A good diving catch, though, and the ball thrown perfectly by Jim Hart.
24:08The coverage is there.
24:11Let's look in on that Dallas rush.
24:14Harvey Martin and his crew.
24:16Too tall over there with Dan Deardorff in a Mexican standoff.
24:22So it's 1st and 10. Pat Tilley is now in near wide on the left side from the 29-yard line.
24:27Mel Gray to the right.
24:29Wayne Morris trying to find Metcalfe's block, and he does.
24:32And he gets out to the 40-yard line.
24:35Very close, in fact. I believe that's a first down.
24:38And Metcalfe got a good block off in front of him.
24:41Yes, he did. And Wayne Morris showing a little bit of kicking up his heels himself.
24:46He's a good-looking running back, isn't he?
24:49Look at Deardorff over there.
24:52Much of the mannerisms of Terry Metcalfe, as a matter of fact.
24:56So he got it out to the Cardinal 39, 1st and 10.
25:0010-37, left to go in the game. The Cardinals leading by one.
25:08Hart quick to his fullback, Morris across the 40.
25:13A reminder, a great television show.
25:1660 Minutes will be seen in its entirety following the conclusion of this game.
25:21And for you folks on the West Coast, it will be seen at its usual time.
25:26And you're right. It is one of the best shows on television.
25:28It is. I like it.
25:30Well, talking about one of the better shows on television, this ain't no bad crowd to hang around with.
25:34This ain't no bummer.
25:3642nd and 9 from the 40 of the Cardinals.
25:39And Jim Hart has Tilly in a slot right.
25:47Hart getting great protection, deep down the right side to Gray, and he overshoots him.
25:52Benny Barnes was right there with him, and Cliff Harris passed over.
25:56Tom Landry, who might have the most technical and complicated defensive setup of any team in the NFL.
26:04They tell me it takes years to learn it.
26:06Any way that you look at that, man, he's just got to be a great coach.
26:09I think Cory Ell put it to the tab on it the other day to me, and it just took me by surprise.
26:13He said he was comparing the two teams, and he said, we don't have the athletes at Dallas Cowboys.
26:18All their players are great athletes.
26:20And coaching, did you know that Tom Landry was a great coach?
26:23What'd you say to that?
26:24I said, well, I kind of looked at his record over the past 11 years and it looked all right to me.
26:27He said he is a great coach.
26:29Third and nine from the Cardinal 40-yard line, and the backs are split now.
26:34They go slot left.
26:41Big rush, big rush, and down goes Hart.
26:44Harvey Martin had him on the 30-yard line, and Aaron Kyle went flying over the top.
26:50And that's what they're doing now to combat that.
26:52They've been double-teaming Harvey Martin with a line, keeping him back in the backfield.
26:56And that time they just blitzed, took care of that back, and turned old Harvey loose.
27:00That our boy Harvey.
27:01And they lost 10, so that drives it back to the Cardinal 30-yard line.
27:06And all day, we have been talking about an anxious Terry Joyce.
27:10There's a final.
27:11Atlanta toughened one out over San Francisco, 7-0.
27:15And for all you folks watching that game, pull up a chair.
27:18Have we got something here?
27:19Joyce hits a ground ball down towards Butch Johnson,
27:23and he gets away from one man and is buried by a couple of others.
27:27Kenny Stone, number 23, hit him,
27:30but undismayed, Johnson stayed on his feet for another moment.
27:34Carl Allen finally knocked him down.
27:39So we've got 9 minutes and 18 seconds left to go
27:42as this big Dallas rush heats up Hart, but the Cardinals lead by one.
27:48First and 10 for Dallas on their own 33-yard line.
27:53Staubach has passed 16 for 27 for 131 yards,
27:58and he takes over on his own 33.
28:00Dorsett, deep man out of the eye, puts Johnson's slot left,
28:05and it's Dorsett, hit low by Mike Dawson, number 73, and down he goes.
28:11A couple of numbers.
28:12A couple of numbers.
28:13Hart is 7 for 25, 151 yards and one touchdown,
28:17a 60-yard beauty to Mel Gray.
28:20Staubach, 16 for 27, 131.
28:23His touchdowns are 77-yard scamper from Dorsett
28:27and Dorsett from one yard out.
28:30And for those of you just joining us, Anthony Dorsett has been superb.
28:36Second and 6 from the 37.
28:38Staubach going to Drew Pearson,
28:41and he just did do a toe dance and caught it.
28:44Lee Nelson unable to break it up.
28:47So smooth the way this man operates.
28:49So fluid.
28:50Just almost effortless.
28:51Keep most feet in bounds.
28:52No effort whatsoever.
28:53He was one of those free agents the Cowboys came on.
28:56In fact, two of them made All-Pro last year.
28:59I think Cliff Harris was his free agent.
29:01One of the two of them.
29:03I was just going to say that Drew Pearson now has caught 6 for 55 yards.
29:10What a great show.
29:11Logan's run.
29:12Mind-bending adventure.
29:148 p.m. Eastern, 7 p.m. Central and Mountain Time.
29:17I like it.
29:18That man living the life.
29:19Third and one on the 43.
29:24Dorsett, he ran into a group, and the group is led by Dawson, number 73,
29:30a two-year man out of Arizona.
29:32Big Mike doing a great job plugging up the middle.
29:35He is that.
29:36He's had some good support all day, too, from Tim Carney.
29:38He has been good.
29:39Dorsett.
29:40Tim Carney and Mike Dawson this time.
29:45They just plug up that middle.
29:48Dorsett has carried now 10 times, Alex, for 133 yards.
29:53That's saying enough about a guy that they expected to do just that.
29:59First and 10 from the Dallas 45.
30:01Eight minutes left to go in the game.
30:0324-23 Cardinals.
30:06Golden Richards inside Drew Pearson's slot left.
30:09Dorsett with Newhouse out in front of him.
30:12Down he goes.
30:16Newhouse, along with Jim Cooper, number 61, were pulling to try and clear it out,
30:22but there was no way.
30:26This is so typical of Roger Staubach, the way he handles things.
30:29He never loses his foy.
30:30He never lets the game get out of control.
30:32He can be trailed by a couple touchdowns.
30:34He keeps bringing them back.
30:35Gets three one time.
30:36Takes six when he can get it.
30:38He's just a great field general.
30:39He has that ability that a lot of quarterbacks lack.
30:42He has pure and simple leadership.
30:45Well, Roger now relying on that.
30:47You can see his numbers as he brings them out second and seven from the 48.
30:53Pearson right.
30:55Puts Johnson left.
30:57And Staubach throwing it high and deep, and Roger Worley breaks it up
31:02and load everything.
31:04They're going to call a penalty.
31:08Drew Pearson.
31:09That is not going to be received well here in Busch Stadium, is it?
31:14Butch Johnson came over to see if Drew Pearson is all right.
31:17That looks like a 39-yard penalty.
31:20There was a 43-yard penalty against the Cardinals moments ago.
31:25You at home, you make up your mind.
31:27Roger Staubach just decided to go for the bomb.
31:30All of a sudden, you never can figure this guy.
31:32He throws it up there and lets old Drew Pearson run under it.
31:35It's underthrown, as you see.
31:40I guess if the penalty was on anybody, it'd be Roger Worley,
31:43and it might be for unnecessary roughness rather than pass interference.
31:46That right elbow of his might have...
31:49Yeah, you might could call it.
31:51You might.
31:53And it was.
31:54Lee Nelson was down there with him.
31:56It's 1st and 10 on the Cardinal 12, and this crowd is furious.
32:01Golden Richards left, Butch Johnson right.
32:08Staubach going into the right corner to Johnson.
32:11Broken up, and again, Lee Nelson.
32:13And there's a flag on the play.
32:20There's old Zook.
32:21John Zook.
32:22Back healthy again.
32:27Illegal procedure against Dallas.
32:32People in Atlanta, they think they're watching the ex-Falcons play.
32:35There's Kenny Reeves, who just came over from Atlanta a couple of years ago.
32:41So, an illegal motion and a 5-yard penalty.
32:44It was 1st and 10 from the 12.
32:46It'll be 1st and 15 from the 17.
32:51Illegal motion.
32:54Illegal motion.
32:56Offense line.
33:01So, 1st and 15 from the Cardinal 17.
33:046.58 to go.
33:06The Cardinal's leading by one.
33:0824-23.
33:11Tony Hill, wide left.
33:12Golden Richards, wide right.
33:14Dorsett and Newhouse, the running backs.
33:19Staubach flipping it down for Golden Richards.
33:22And he got it!
33:23Touchdown!
33:24He took it away from Lee Nelson.
33:27Nelson just turned his back on it and never found the ball at all.
33:30And what a beautiful play by Roger Staubach
33:32and the adjustment on the football by Golden Richards.
33:35Gracious, that was pretty.
33:37That's the advantage you get over a defensive back
33:40that will turn his head from the quarterback
33:42and not be able to find the ball.
33:43He's virtually helpless on a pass like that.
33:45He's just got to be lucky.
33:47As you see, Lee Nelson never finds the ball
33:50and a great adjustment by Golden Richards.
33:54So it's a 17-yard touchdown pass from Staubach to Golden Richards.
33:59Efren Herrera now gets it up.
34:01And it's good.
34:03And so the Cowboys have come from behind
34:06to take a 6-point lead with 6.53 to go in the game.
34:10The Cowboys 30 and the Cardinals 24.
34:15For a lot of folks who have watched regional games
34:18and have now hooked up to see this one,
34:20pull up and take a look because you're looking at a dandy.
34:23I'll tell it.
34:24Efren Herrera kicks it down to the left side.
34:27Picked up by Metcalf.
34:28Fumbled.
34:29Terry's got it again at the 15 to the 20.
34:32Gets away from Henderson to the 35.
34:35Spinning at the 40 and goes down across the 40.
34:38Scott Laidlow along with Jay Saldy
34:41Scott Laidlow along with Jay Saldy
34:44making the hit as he got it out to the 40.
34:47Terry Metcalf.
34:49Oh, has he excited us this afternoon.
34:52He's done just about everything.
34:53He's caught passes.
34:54He's thrown passes.
34:55He's returned punts, kickoffs.
34:57The guy is just something.
34:59He brings the excitement back to the play.
35:02Brother.
35:04And look at the block and they go.
35:06Look at it form.
35:09What a reckless little performer.
35:12First and ten for the Cardinals on their own 40-yard line.
35:15They trail by six.
35:17We've got 640 left to go in the game.
35:23And Hart's going to send it up.
35:25A little release to Morris at the 40.
35:28To the 45 and knocked down at the 47-yard line.
35:32A big mix-up as Cliff Harris and D.D. Lewis
35:35finally knocked him off balance.
35:37By the way, they call them the cardiac Cardinals.
35:40You know why?
35:41In 1975, they won five games in the final minute.
35:45In the last three years, they've won 32 victories.
35:49Fifteen by less than a touchdown.
35:52Three three-point.
35:54Four of them by one touchdown.
35:56Nineteen of their wins by four points.
35:59You betcha.
36:00They're never out of it.
36:01So second and two from their own 49.
36:08Back stay in. Hart cranks up going deep over for Mel Gray,
36:12but he wasn't anywhere close.
36:15Some kind of mix-up in the pattern that time.
36:18Mel Gray kind of turned it on in.
36:20I think he thought he was going to take off inside on him deep.
36:24So that will make it third and two from the Cardinal 49.
36:28We have five minutes and 50 seconds left to go in the ballgame.
36:33The Cardinals led 10-3, 17-13 at halftime, 24-16.
36:42But Dallas has scored 14 points in the fourth quarter
36:46to take a 30-24 lead.
36:48So it's third and two.
36:51Jackie Smith in there a tight end now.
36:59And Wayne Morris has nowhere to go.
37:03No, sir. Absolutely nowhere to go.
37:10Now what do you do?
37:12The crowd is hollering go.
37:15But after you saw that big, marvelous Dallas defense
37:19stiffened to hold Wayne Morris,
37:21do you try to challenge him again?
37:23Fourth down and about two feet.
37:27Not quite a yard.
37:30Fourth and one, 527 to go.
37:33They go for it.
37:41Wayne Morris, he's got it.
37:43There's a flag on the play.
37:46Morris takes it to the 45, but there's a flag on the play.
37:51Yeah, that flag was thrown mighty soon, too.
37:53Offside, Dallas!
37:57There you go.
37:59Look at that hulk of a man.
38:02Offensive captain for the Cardinals.
38:08See if we can detect the offsides there.
38:10Defense, middle guard, offside.
38:13I believe it was Larry Cole.
38:16I think it was Larry Cole.
38:22I don't know that I'd gamble that much time
38:25left on the clock or not.
38:26I don't know that I'd have done that,
38:28but then Cory Ell's record speaks pretty favorably for him.
38:30Boy, it sure does.
38:33All right, the ball is on the Dallas 44-yard line.
38:36First and ten, five minutes and 12 seconds to go.
38:40Dallas leading by six.
38:44The backs stay in.
38:46Hart down the right side,
38:48and he overthrows Mel Gray, Mark Washington,
38:51and Charlie Waters there.
38:53The crowd wanting interference called,
38:55but it is not to be.
38:57And an unruffled Tom Landry takes it all in.
39:00Oh, he dodged the bullet again.
39:02That Mel Gray, that Charlie Waters,
39:04fully intended on separating him from his helmet.
39:07Final score, Denver defeating Kansas City 23-7.
39:11If you tuned in late or if you are just joining up,
39:14one reason the crowd is so active about pass interference,
39:18Dallas has had two big pass interference penalty plays
39:22that have set up touchdowns.
39:24And they have come from behind to lead 30-24.
39:27Five minutes and six seconds left to go.
39:30Second and ten on the Dallas 44.
39:34Pat Tilley wide right.
39:38Metcalf just flaring to the right,
39:40but Hart down the middle, and he overthrows Kane.
39:44Charlie Harris there to hit him to make sure,
39:47and Harris didn't like the fact that Kane hit him back.
39:51And now Brunick said, what's wrong?
39:53Why would you do that to our man Cliff Harris?
39:57Let's see what did happen here.
39:59Let's take a look at it from the end zone and see what we did find.
40:02Burning back in that coverage there.
40:04Frozen for a minute, Randy White putting on a good rush there, I guess.
40:07Look at that, Cliff Harris. He will hit you.
40:11I didn't see anything wrong with that.
40:21Roger Finney coming out of the ball game now.
40:24Time out for the moment.
40:26Finney, number 60.
40:29And Jim Hart now with a very big play call.
40:32There's Roger. What a day he's had trying to keep out Harvey Martin.
40:36I'll say. He has had his hands full all day long,
40:38but so many other people do too.
40:40Nothing to be really ashamed of.
40:42Third and ten from the Dallas 44.
40:52Hut, hut, hut.
40:55Hart gets it off deep to his man Kane.
40:59And he got it inside the 20-yard line.
41:02He beat Mel Renfroe by coming back.
41:05Mike Harris, number 84, making the catch inside the 20.
41:10Once again, Jim Hart under pressure. He seems to perform better.
41:14They had the blitz on that time.
41:16That kind of surprises me about that Dallas having the blitz on.
41:19The ball thrown slightly under thrown.
41:21Had it been thrown perfectly, it would have been a touchdown.
41:24Mel Renfroe, twice he's been victimized today.
41:29Oh, picked up all the blitzes there nicely.
41:31Cliff Harris still not giving up on the thing.
41:33Larry Cole again.
41:37So Ike Harris makes the big catch.
41:39First and ten on the Dallas 17-yard line.
41:42428 left in the game.
41:44Cowboys leading by six.
41:50Hart to Wayne Morris.
41:52And Randy White hit him from behind and decked him immediately.
41:55Number 54.
41:59I find myself, I've watched Dallas play for the last couple years.
42:02And I find myself in pressure situations watching Tom Henderson.
42:05Because if it's a big play to be made, the guy has a knack for doing it.
42:09Roger Finney has come back in.
42:11Hank Allison coming out.
42:13So Finney took a breather.
42:15Now he'll go back to trying to tie up Harvey Martin.
42:19There's Cole and Jones and Henderson.
42:22And here come the Cardinals, second and ten on the Dallas 17.
42:29Hart on a draw to Wayne Morris.
42:32And he got inside the 15 and is knocked down.
42:39They'll spot it at the 14-yard line.
42:4360 minutes.
42:45Roda on our own.
42:47All in the family.
42:48Alice and Kojak.
42:49What an all-star lineup.
42:51And they will be seen in their entirety this evening.
42:54All in the family is still one of my favorite shows.
42:56I like it.
42:58Well, talking about all-star lineups.
43:00They go head to head now.
43:02Third and seven from the Dallas 14-yard line.
43:05304 left to go in the game.
43:13Hart fakes once.
43:15Goes high and over Kane.
43:17They're claiming interference.
43:19It will not be called.
43:21J.V. Kane thought that Charlie Waters, number 41, had interfered.
43:27But they didn't call it.
43:29I want to tell you one thing.
43:31And to you folks who saw Washington beat Tampa Bay 10 to nothing.
43:35We have a lot more going on here.
43:3730 to 24, Dallas.
43:39Two minutes and 53 seconds left to go in the ballgame.
43:44The Cardinals have it fourth and seven on the Dallas 14-yard line.
43:49We can take a look at that last play, Alex.
43:51I think there was some contact between Charlie Waters and J.V. Kane here.
43:56I might be wrong.
43:57See the pump there.
43:58Too tall could not bat it down.
44:01And there was some contact, but I don't think it was play.
44:03Fourth and seven from the 14.
44:09Furious charge.
44:10He throws it.
44:11And it's intercepted by Cliff Harris.
44:14And Terry Metcalf missed the tackle.
44:16And he finally goes down at the 10-yard line.
44:19Cliff Harris.
44:21Two times all throw.
44:23Three times in the throw ball.
44:25Makes the big interception.
44:27And that just about took the tail feathers from the Cardinals.
44:3030 to 24, Cowboys.
44:33244 left.
44:38We've got two minutes and 44 seconds left to go in the ballgame.
44:42The Cowboys, 30.
44:43The Cardinals, 24.
44:44And Tom Landry has just seen one of his clutch performers, Cliff Harris,
44:48come up with a fourth down interception.
44:50And now Roger Staubach will try and move him out from their own 10-yard line.
44:55Drew Pearson wide left.
44:57Dorsett is in there with Newhouse.
44:59Two tight ends, Dupree and Salde.
45:01And it's Newhouse trying to follow Donovan's block.
45:04And there's a big, brutal battle right there at the 10.
45:08Mike Dawson, among others.
45:11If you're thinking about going someplace that the game is over, please don't.
45:15The Cardinals are just always exceptional in the last two minutes.
45:18The Cardinals have elected to take a timeout.
45:21Bobby Newhouse with that low center of gravity.
45:23Look how he gets underneath everybody.
45:26He's hard to knock off his feet.
45:32The Cardinals will be 2nd and 10 from the Dallas 10-yard line.
45:36Here is our big all-star lineup on CBS for tonight.
45:3960 Minutes, followed by Rota, and then the premiere of On Our Own.
45:44Then All in the Family, followed by Alice, and then Kojak.
45:49What a tremendous all-star lineup.
45:51And they'll be all coming up right here this evening, in their entirety,
45:55right here on CBS.
45:57Well, Roger Staubach talking to Tom Landry.
46:00It's a familiar scene on television screens for Lothi's many years.
46:04Staubach, 9 years at the controls.
46:07Meanwhile, the Cardinals, trailing by 6.
46:11Two minutes and 35 seconds remaining in the game.
46:14It'll be 2nd and 10.
46:17This is a timeout, St. Louis.
46:19Hart, 9 for 32, 186 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception.
46:25Kojak, 16 for 29, 153 yards, 1 touchdown.
46:30There you see the timeouts remaining.
46:33The runners, Dorsett, 11 for 136 yards, would lead the pack.
46:38And, of course, he picked up 77 on one carry.
46:412nd and 10 from the 10.
46:43Puts Johnson in a slot inside Drew Pearson Wright.
46:50Staubach going for Drew Pearson.
46:53He's all alone.
46:56And Drew Pearson being chased by Mike Sensabaugh.
47:00He's gone.
47:01You believe that?
47:02You just don't know about Roger Staubach.
47:04There is a flag on the play, however.
47:07Way down by the end zone, a flag on the play.
47:11Who in the world would have thought up that play?
47:13Now, Tom Landry had something to say about it, I'm sure,
47:16because of them huddling over there.
47:18You just don't know about Roger.
47:1990 yards down the drain.
47:21On that, it's against Dallas.
47:26That would have been the last thing I'd have looked for.
47:28Offense, 61-0.
47:32Jim Cooper, caught holding, number 61.
47:37And what a spot to be in.
47:38You've just blown a 90-yard touchdown.
47:42It is 2nd and 15 from the 5-yard line.
47:49So Jim Cooper, who is listed 3rd on the 3 deep,
47:55you can just imagine how he feels right now.
47:58He's out of Temple, a 22-year-old rookie.
48:01He aged rapidly after that play.
48:03I'll say he did or he will when they watch the film.
48:052nd and 15 from the 5-yard line.
48:08We've got 2-22 to go.
48:10Dallas leading by 6.
48:13Richards wide left.
48:14It's Anthony Dorsett going nowhere.
48:17Charlie Davis, number 76, wrapped him up.
48:21The same Davis who ran with a fumble for a touchdown.
48:25The Cardinals asking for time.
48:302 minutes and 9 seconds left to go.
48:333rd down, 15 to go.
48:36They moved it out to about the 6-yard line.
48:40The Cardinals trailing by 6.
48:43And Staubach will pay Tom Landry yet another visit.
48:48This is a long way from over with 2 minutes and 9 seconds remaining,
48:51but it's so important to Cardinals, to them, this game, the outcome of it.
48:56You know, they lose today.
48:57They're in big trouble.
48:58Dallas, of course, they can afford to lose today.
49:01They came in today's game 3-0, Cardinals 1-2.
49:05It's not a must game for the Cowboys, but gracious, it is a big game for the Cardinals.
49:09We can take a look at some final scores right now.
49:12Philadelphia 28 over the New York Giants 10.
49:16The New York Jets edging Buffalo 24-19.
49:21Oakland defeating Cleveland 26-10.
49:25New England shutting out Seattle 31-0.
49:30Cincinnati knocking off Green Bay 17-7.
49:35Miami and Baltimore slugging it out.
49:37Baltimore the winner 45-28.
49:41And Pittsburgh not only losing, but evidently losing their great quarterback,
49:46Terry Bradshaw, Houston 27, Pittsburgh 10.
49:51San Diego blanked Hank Stram's New Orleans club that scored over 40 points last week 14-0.
49:58Minnesota edging Detroit 14-7.
50:03Atlanta, in a battle of zeros, finally got on the scoreboard to beat San Francisco 7-0.
50:09And Washington, in a defensive battle against a very tough Tampa Bay defensive team, beat them 10-0.
50:15Denver 23, Kansas City 7.
50:18And there's our beauty, with 2 minutes and 9 seconds left,
50:223rd and 14 for Dallas on their own 6-yard line.
50:27Dupre has Salty in the backfield.
50:30Another tight end to block for Staubach.
50:34Roger from the end zone.
50:37Throwing, and is it complete? No good.
50:40Intended for Drew Pearson, but he was out of bounds.
50:44Well, predictably, that's who you would go.
50:46That's where Roger goes so often in pressure situations and clutch situations to Drew Pearson.
50:51That time, Drew could not keep it in bounds.
50:54That's Mike Dawson hollering at the official.
50:57Lee Nelson playing an outstanding game today.
50:59He had the coverage over there. Bumped him out of bounds.
51:02Roger doesn't hesitate to throw out of that end zone.
51:06There you see it.
51:08There's a flag that has been thrown, and that's why Mike Dawson was hollering.
51:13And they put the ball on the 21-yard line of Dallas.
51:1773, defense roughing the passer.
51:21Charged against Mike Dawson.
51:24Roughing the passer against Dawson.
51:26What a crusher that is.
51:28Once again, the lack of experience.
51:30Second-year man Mike Dawson.
51:32Spinning off the block there.
51:35And there could well have been.
51:38He'll learn in time. Gracious, that hurt the card.
51:40So the penalty by Cooper offset a 90-yard touchdown,
51:44and now the penalty by Dawson gives Dallas a great opportunity.
51:49Here comes Robert Newhouse.
51:52Didn't quite get it to the 25.
51:56As you see, there are two minutes left to go in the ballgame.
52:00And what a ballgame it has been.
52:02And Dallas trying to hold on to it, leading by six, 30 to 24.
52:10Second and six from the Cowboy 25.
52:13They just got a big penalty going against the Cardinals.
52:16Newhouse and Dorsett out of the eye.
52:19Drew Pearson wide left.
52:21And now in motion.
52:24It is Dorsett.
52:27He just went leaping over Charlie Davis,
52:31who was on the ground, number 76, to pick up the yards.
52:35And Davis hurt his leg and is just slowly getting up
52:38while Tom Landry sends Butch Johnson in with a play.
52:43One left for the Cardinals.
52:46So Dallas with three timeouts left.
52:49They're going to try and hold on to the ball.
52:511.33 and the clock is going.
52:54Don't believe they're going to get the hands on it again.
52:57Doesn't look that way. They have the chance.
52:59A big break when the penalty against Cooper,
53:01and a bad break the penalty against Dawson.
53:04Third and two from the 29.
53:06Here comes Dorsett.
53:08A great play by Kenny Reeves,
53:11the strong safety.
53:13Robert Newhouse tried to get Kenny Reeves out of there,
53:16and number 36 wouldn't budge and tied it up.
53:20Frankly, I'm a little surprised in the play selection by Roger.
53:23Pitch out is kind of hard to use in a situation like that.
53:28And a rookie? I don't believe so.
53:36All right, one minute and eight seconds to go.
53:39It's fourth and three on the Dallas 29.
53:42Danny White is coming in to punt.
53:44He'll be kicking from his 15.
53:46Terry Metcalf is all alone on his 30.
53:49What a finish. What a ball game.
53:52We'll see if the Cardinals are coming.
53:55No.
53:56And Danny White gets it away off to the right side and out of bounds,
54:01and we'll see where they spot it.
54:04The first look, it will put the Cardinals in pretty good field position.
54:10Still plenty of time. There's a minute and two seconds.
54:13One-two.
54:14Mel Gray.
54:15Except no timeouts for the Cardinals.
54:18Oh, there's Wazo.
54:20They're going to spot it on the Cardinal 45-yard line.
54:24So Jim Hart trying to lead his Cardinals 55 yards.
54:31And the Cowboys 30, the Cardinals 24 with a minute to go.
54:35Ike Harris, wide left. Mel Gray, wide right.
54:39Kane, the tight end on the right side.
54:42Wayne Morris, Terry Metcalf, the running backs.
54:47The backs stay in to block.
54:49And Hart needs the blocking and finally gets it down to the right side,
54:53and it's going to be intercepted, intended for Mel Gray.
54:57And it was Charlie Waters, number 41, who made the interception.
55:01Well, there you go.
55:03Those two safeties of the Dallas Cowboys.
55:05Cliff Harris just a little while ago with his interception, and now Charlie Waters.
55:09A ball that I know Jim Hart did not want to throw.
55:12Throwing a ball clear across the field after having to scramble and run around the pocket.
55:16The timing, he had to throw it too late and too far.
55:19Charlie Waters not about to let him get behind him.
55:23Well, this is a big play from the young man from Clemson University.
55:28Well, we have 54 seconds left to go.
55:30We would like to thank our producer, Chuck Mildon, our director, Sandy Grossman,
55:34our statistician, Dr. Bob Woods, for sending you this ballgame.
55:38And a reminder, the CBS Sports Spectacular next Saturday at 4.30 p.m.
55:42Live, the full coverage of the Jockey Club, the Chinichi Cup, and the Strongmen's competition.
55:48And Starbucks just goes looking for a hole.
55:51Fifty seconds left to go, and the Cowboys with three timeouts, and the Cardinals have none.
55:57And so the Cardinals have had all their tail feathers pulled here.
56:01A tough ballgame, pass interference going against the Cardinals.
56:05Then a 90-yard touchdown play called back because of a penalty against Dallas Cowboys.
56:13Then Don Correale saw what appeared to be a big play, wiped out on a penalty against the Cardinals.
56:20And so penalties have really taken their toll and decided the issue in the waning moment.
56:24I could agree with you. Yes, sir.
56:26They just run it out here, and there's not a thing the Cardinals can do about it.
56:30So Dallas will remain victorious.
56:33They'll be 4-0, and the Cardinals suffer perhaps a mortal defeat.
56:381-3, but what a showdown.
56:40The Cardinals led 10-3.
56:42The Cardinals led 17-13 at the half.
56:46The Cardinals led 24-16 at the end of three quarters,
56:51but two touchdowns in the fourth period for Dallas,
56:54and the Cardinals lose it as a great Dallas ballclub hangs on to win it 30-24.
57:02Tom Landry has now won 141 games in his career,
57:09the sixth winningest coach in history.
57:17The NFL Today is a presentation of CBS Forbes.
57:24This is CBS.
