A 34-year-old man was shot dead by police in Sydney on Saturday night. Police allege the man attempted to strike an officer with a knife.

00:08Now it's believed the driver of that car is the person who contacted Triple Zero.
00:12Now police dispatched two cars to the scene with five officers.
00:16Now they say what happened next occurred in a matter of seconds.
00:19The man is alleged to have rushed at the driver of one of the police cars, cutting his operational
00:24vest twice but not injuring him.
00:26The driver of the car was able to move it and escape further harm.
00:30Now the officers are then said to have gotten out of the car and discharged a taser which
00:34had no effect on the man.
00:36That's when police say a senior constable fired two shots at the man and into his torso.
00:42That was the same person who was driving the police car and whose vest was cut.

00:55Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden has reviewed the vision from the body-worn
00:58cameras and this is how he described the conduct of the senior constable who discharged his
01:04weapon.

01:06He's an experienced senior constable, he's a very capable frontline police officer.
01:10Again, just remembering that we were called to this area because the community identified
01:14a threat to the public safety and they responded on the information available to me this stage,
01:19they responded appropriately.
01:23Now the five officers haven't been interviewed yet, they'll be interviewed as part of the
01:27critical incident investigation.
01:29The findings of that investigation will be subject to an independent review.
