00:00Sharon Mitchell, born in 1957 or 1958, was adopted and raised Roman Catholic in Monmouth
00:05County, New Jersey.
00:07She married briefly at age 17 before becoming an off-Broadway actress and dancer, performing
00:13with the Martha Graham Dance Company.
00:16In the mid-1970s, she began appearing in erotic films such as Captain Lust and the Pirate
00:21Women, 1977, Sexcapades, 1983, Waterpower, 1976, and The Devil and Miss Jones 2, 1982.
00:31She also had small roles in mainstream films such as Tootsie, 1982, and The Deer Hunter,
00:391978.
00:40Mitchell made approximately 1,000 erotic films over a 20-year career, including 38 as a director.
00:47She is the subject of the 1986 verite film Kamikaze Hearts, directed by Juliet Bashore,
00:53which follows her behind the scenes of an erotic adaptation of George Bizet's Carmen
00:58and explores her tumultuous relationship with then-girlfriend Tigre Manette.
01:04During her years in the adult industry, Mitchell developed a heroin addiction.
01:08In 1996, after a male stalker who was obsessed with her erotic films assaulted, raped, and
01:14nearly killed her, she quit drugs, became a certified addiction counselor, and later
01:19obtained a M.A. and a Ph.D. from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality while
01:24working a variety of jobs, including video engineer's assistant, caterer, florist, dog
01:30walker, and maid.
01:31However, there are questions about the legitimacy of Mitchell's Ph.D. from the Institute for
01:36Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, as it is an unaccredited facility not recognized by
01:41any university or college.
01:44In 1998, Mitchell founded the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, AIM, an organization
01:50which provided information and STD testing to workers in adult entertainment.
01:56As of 2004, they were testing 1,200 erotic performers a month.
02:01According to the Associated Press, many in the adult industry credit her with raising
02:06the visibility of the risks of HIV-AIDs in the erotic industry.
02:11In 2011, a security breach led to over 12,000 adult performers' personal information being
02:17released publicly.
02:19A privacy breach lawsuit was filed against the Institute, and they closed their doors
02:24in May 2011.
02:26Oversight of the protocol was assumed by the Free Speech Coalition.
02:31Mitchell is a member of the AVN Hall of Fame and XRCO Hall of Fame since 1988.
02:38She has also been featured in the documentary series, The Dark Side of Erotic.
02:43After retiring from the adult film industry, Mitchell continued to work as an eroticologist
02:48and counselor.
02:49She earned a doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology from The Ohio State University
02:54and has worked as a Counseling Center Administrator, Staff Psychologist, and Faculty in higher
02:59education institutions.
03:01Dr. Mitchell's professional interests include College Counseling Center Administration,
03:07Elder Supervision and Training, Group Therapy, Multicultural Issues, and Women's Issues.
03:13She has presented nationally and internationally and has published research on emerging adulthood,
03:18group counseling, racial identity development, interpersonal violence, eating disorders,
03:24suicide prevention, international college students, and College Counseling Center organizational
03:29structures.
03:31She has served on the editorial board of the Journal of College Student Psychotherapy and
03:36the Journal of College Student Development.
03:39She is a past president of the Delaware Board of Examiners of Psychologists, served as the
03:44directorate for the Commission for Counseling and Psychological Services in the American
03:49College Personnel Association, and is a fellow, American Psychological Association, Society
03:56of Counseling Psychology.
03:59Mitchell has also written a memoir titled, Rich, Thin, and Happy, A Memoir.
