00:00The 17th Panzer Division was formed on November 1, 1940, from the 27th Infantry Division.
00:07Initially, it consisted of the 36th Panzer Regiment, which was detached to the 14th
00:13Panzer Division on November 11, 1940. The 393rds Artillery Regiment was redesignated
00:20as the 3 103rds Artillery Regiment on January 21, 1941. The 34th Motorcycle Battalion
00:29was formed from the 3-5 Arshtey Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division,
00:35and the 3-33rd Doord Infantry Regiment was redesignated as the 1-33rd Schützen Regiment.
00:44The division took part in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union, in June 1941.
00:53It was engaged in several battles, including the Battle of Moscow,
00:57where it suffered significant losses. In November 1942, the division was sent to the
01:03southern sector of the Eastern Front, participating in Operation Winter Storm,
01:08the failed attempt to relieve the surrounded troops at Stalingrad.
01:14After the failure of Operation Winter Storm, the division retreated through Ukraine and Poland,
01:19eventually ending the war in Czechoslovakia. In February 1945, the division was reorganized
01:28and incorporated the Jutobog Panzer Division. It received approximately 50 tanks of the type
01:34Panzer III and Panzer IV. The division was engaged in minor attacks and defensive operations,
01:42including the Battle of Kursk in 1943. In late January and early February 1944,
01:50the 17th Panzer Division took part in the relief operations for the Kursun-Cherkessy pocket
01:56as part of the III Panzer Corps. In the end, the involved German tank divisions were halted
02:02by the Red Army 12 kilometers from the pocket, but the troops inside broke out,
02:08abandoning their heavy equipment. The division remained in reserve until April and May,
02:14stationed behind the front line before taking part in operations around Lviv
02:19to counter the Soviet Lvov-Sandomierz offensive. Until the end of October, the unit took part in
02:26operations in the Tarnow region and then south of the Barano Bridgehead, near Sandomierz.
02:33From November, it became part of the reserves, receiving 80 Panzer IV and Panzer V tanks,
02:40Panthers. In February 1945, the division was attached to Army Group Center on the Oder River.
02:48By March 1945, it retreated as far as Jegendorf by the Red Army. Early in April, it had retreated
02:57southwest into Moravia, where in quick succession it came under the order of 17th Army and 1st Army.
03:05The division surrendered to the Soviet Army near Görlitz at the end of April 1945.
03:12The 17th Panzer Division was commanded by notable officers such as Hans-Jürgen von Arnim and
03:18Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma. These commanders played crucial roles in the division's operations and
03:24battles throughout the war. The 17th Panzer Division was organized into several key units,
03:32including the 1-12 Schützen Regiment, 1-33rd Schützen Regiment, 34th Motorcycle Battalion,
03:413rd Panzer Brigade, 1-35th EU Panzer Regiment, 1-103rd Artillery Regiment, 7th Reconnaissance
