00:00A swing state governor believes America is ready to say...
00:03I do.
00:04...to an all-female ticket.
00:06And no take-backs.
00:07Nikki Haley says she meant everything she said about Donald Trump, but will vote for
00:13him anyway.
00:14Live at the table, Joe Pinion, Ellie Mistal, Jeff Duncan, and Jane Koston.
00:21Welcome to a special edition of Newsnight, State of the Race.
00:31Good evening, everyone.
00:39I'm Abby Phillip in New York.
00:40As always, let's get right to what America is talking about.
00:43A whole new race tonight.
00:45Kamala Harris is closing in on getting a massive endorsement from former President Barack Obama.
00:51She's been waiting all week for it, and Donald Trump apparently is no longer the clear leader
00:56in the presidential race, at least according to a new string of polls.
01:00But also tonight, Donald Trump is now suggesting that he won't commit to a debate until the
01:06Democrats formally commit to a nominee.
01:09Harris replying on Twitter, what happened to any time, any place?
01:13Calling his bluff, our panel is here in New York.
01:17Jane, shocking.
01:19Donald Trump apparently backing out of this, but why?
01:22You mean Donald Trump wants to back out of a commitment he made?
01:25Stunning news.
01:26But why hand this to her?
01:28At this particular moment, she's had a string of good days.
01:31Backing out of a debate is not a good look for really any candidate.
01:34It isn't, but I think that at this point, he wants to make this seem less certain than
01:38it already appears to be.
01:39I think that this is a moment, one, he doesn't want to do this debate, and two, he does not
01:43want to appear to give her the respect she would deserve by saying he would do this debate.
01:49And I think that this is just another moment in which Donald Trump wants the attention
01:52back on himself and also doesn't want to do this debate at all.
01:56I think he thinks that the first one, you know, he did one, and now he doesn't want
02:00to do another, and he's going to throw in a bunch of Trumpian buzzwords, but he just
02:03doesn't want to do it.
02:04Speaking of, so this is, this is the statement here.
02:07It is from the, nominally from Stephen Chung, but it's written by Donald Trump because it
02:14says, there is a strong sense by many in the Democrat party, namely Barack Hussein Obama,
02:20that Kamala Harris is a Marxist fraud who cannot beat Donald Trump.
02:25I would like him to say that to her face, right?
02:27But he won't because he's a little punk, right?
02:29And that's what you have to always remember about Donald Trump.
02:32He's a scared little punk because the thing you would do if you were a big strong man
02:38who likes to beat on people, right, is that you say, you debate whoever the Democrats
02:43put up.
02:44You'll debate Kamala Harris.
02:45We'll debate Harris.
02:46They want to put up Biden, you'll debate Biden.
02:47They want to put up, you know, the dog from Chuck E. Cheese, you debate the dog from Chuck
02:52E. Cheese, right?
02:53That's what a big strong man does, but Donald Trump is not a big strong man.
02:56Donald Trump is a weak man's idea of a strong man, and that is why when faced with a person
03:02who can bring the case to him in a way that he's never heard it before, he's trying to
03:08backpedal away.
03:09I thought the Chuck E. Cheese was a rat, not a dog.
03:14I think this is about moment.
