00:00Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast where we take a look at all the latest goings on at Brighton, Hove, Albion and Crawley Town.
00:07I'm Matt Pohl and I'm joined by Brighton writers Darren Howard and Henry Bryan and Sam Morton who covers both Albion and Crawley Town.
00:14Brighton kicked off their tour of Japan in emphatic fashion thumping J League outfit Kashima Antlers 5-1 Wednesday afternoon.
00:21We'll pick over the bones of Albion Superbwin Plus, we'll bring you all the latest news from Crawley Town and once again it's not been quiet.
00:27You can read all the latest stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash forward
00:33and you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and freeview channel 276.
00:37You may also be watching on latest TV so thank you very much for tuning in.
00:41But goals from Yancuba Minte, Jeremy Salmiento, Yassine Ayari and Amario Cosiadubri helped Seagulls thump Kashima Antlers in the first game of their Japanese tour.
00:52What did you make of the performance Darren? I know it's admittedly not a competitive game but Fabian Herzl I can't have asked for a much better first game in charge can he?
01:01No, you're right Matt. It was really good to watch. They kept possession well.
01:08They set up in a three at the back in a formation and then it was hard to gauge what sort of formation was in midfield and was up front.
01:18It was very interchangeable. There was lots of lots of clever movement from the players and yeah, it was competitive for a while.
01:27For the first half, the Kashima Antlers, they looked pretty good. They're lively.
01:36It's sort of they're in the middle of their season so they're up to speed.
01:40And it was Brighton's first sort of public game under Herzl and they look good.
01:47Like I said, they kept possession well, but they also had they look sharp in attack as well.
01:52It wasn't just sort of possession knocking it about. They really made some good attacking moves and lots of good interplay.
01:59So, yeah, very encouraging and really good for the confidence as well for the new manager coming in.
02:05Lots of question marks about his experience and how he's going to cope in the Premier League and his squad and how the players would take to him as well.
02:14And, you know, after after De Serby, they're on a tour away.
02:17So they're in Japan and this is their first taste of what it's going to be like under Herzl and sort of the type of guy that he is and what he wants from the players.
02:28So it's all it's all a sort of getting to know me at this stage type thing and as much with the players and the manager as well.
02:36But as you mentioned, there was there were some good goals.
02:39Minter's goal, which which which kicked things off.
02:43Lovely, lovely goal. He really showed some good skill.
02:46James Milner, who's back after his hamstring issues at the end of last season, he played a nice through ball and he cut in from the right hand side,
02:54sat a couple of defenders down and then calmly stroked it in the corner.
02:58It's lovely. And yeah, like you say, Sarmiento, he gave a sort of timely reminder of his talents as well.
03:07What's going to happen to him? We're not we're not quite sure as yet.
03:10Brighton has just got so many attacking options now.
03:14Yet Yasin Ayari, he thumped one in as well.
03:18And then, yeah, the star of the show was was the new lad from Arsenal and he looked really good.
03:25His first goal, I sent a tweet out when he when he finished it and he just looked like Saka as he as he came in.
03:32He was behind him in the Arsenal pecking order.
03:35And at Arsenal, they were calling him the new Saka.
03:39And you can see why he's just full of full of skill, very calm in front of goal as well for both of his goals.
03:46And yeah, really, really couldn't have gone any better for their first first game under Herzela
03:52and a good confidence boost for the for the new players coming in as well.
03:56Well, absolutely. You've mentioned a few players there, Deren.
03:59Abby and you, 23 of them, what would it be in pre-season in the game against Kashima?
04:03But which of them stood out for you, Henry?
04:05The new boys, as Deren mentioned, they look like they're particularly impressed.
04:10Well, I will mention Khoysadoubri in a minute.
04:13But first and foremost, I wanted to sort of congratulate Yakouba Minta because he was quality for that goal that he scored,
04:20being able to skim past those players.
04:23And we know it's not going to be the most competitive game in the world.
04:26And this is an opportunity for Japanese fans to meet Brighton and Hove Albion players and sort of, you know,
04:33expand Brighton and Hove Albion's reach further afield.
04:36But it was great to see that Minta was able to sort of go past that defence so effortlessly, so easy.
04:44And, you know, he seems like a real talent that we've got on our hands for, you know, a decent fee.
04:49It's not normal for Brighton to sign a 19, sorry, 20 year old because he's just had his birthday,
04:5520 year old player for, you know, about just over £30 million or thereabouts.
05:02But he seems like he might be a really good purchase for the Albion.
05:05And I'm really looking forward to seeing him play in the Premier League and seeing how he gets on.
05:10It's a real interesting one to see some of these younger players really performing well.
05:16Koizumi Dubree as well.
05:17I mean, as Dara mentioned, he did finish like Saka in the first goal.
05:21And in the second goal, I think his confidence to just keep running with the ball,
05:24even though there was a mistake made by the defender, by the opposition defender,
05:29I think it was great to see that he just had that confidence to keep going
05:33and actually back himself to score as well, not sort of cut it back and pass to someone else.
05:38And I'm wanting to sort of make his mark and let people know that he is here
05:42and he's ready to make an impact and ready to do the business for the Albion, which was great to see.
05:49What was Hazel's view of things after the win, Darren?
05:52He must have been pleased with what he saw, I imagine.
05:55Yeah, he was. He couldn't have been, you know, it was a perfect day for him on his first outing.
06:02I think the fact that they played so well, they got the win as well.
06:05It gives the players confidence in him as well and his tactics and his methods.
06:11So in that regard, I think he will be very pleased.
06:15He's very reluctant to talk about individuals.
06:19If you say Koizumi played well or Minta played well, he sort of brushes it off.
06:24He's reluctant to praise individuals.
06:27He always talks about the team and how the team's functioning as a whole and how they're communicating.
06:35What I quite liked as well is that he was really annoyed about the goal that they conceded as well.
06:41He was obviously very pleased with the five goals scored, but they had a consolation with 10 minutes to go.
06:51That irritated him and annoyed him.
06:54He didn't sort of blame anybody, but he wanted Steele to have a clean sheet and obviously they didn't quite achieve that.
07:05I just found that quite interesting that he wasn't getting carried away with the result.
07:10He was still sort of looking at areas that they can improve.
07:15I think that bodes well.
07:17They've got the next game against Tokyo Verde on Sunday as well.
07:21Expect a number of the players that weren't quite fit enough to be involved in yesterday's game to come in.
07:29Max Whiffer, the lad who they signed from Fire Lloyd, I think he could be seeing some minutes in the next game as well.
07:38And perhaps Karl Rushworth as well.
07:41Yeah, Deren's mentioned it there, Henry.
07:43Albion's second and final game of their tour season taking Tokyo Verde on Sunday morning.
07:48Do you agree with Deren?
07:49Do you kind of expect to see those players make an appearance in their last game in Japan?
07:54Yeah, I think so.
07:55It's another chance to see some of these younger players.
07:58And as Deren mentioned at the start, they're in the middle of their season.
08:02And at the moment, Tokyo Verde are currently ninth in the JLE compared to the Kashima Antlers that were third place at the time of recording.
08:11I think Karl Rushworth will be an interesting one.
08:13I think he'll definitely be making an appearance because Bart Verbruggen has been ruled out for six weeks with injury.
08:20So there's a bit of a dilemma when it comes to the goalkeeping department for this moment in time.
08:27It'll be interesting to see how he does because it will sort of determine how ready he is.
08:33I mean, he's got a lot of talent as a goalkeeper.
08:35And I mean, you know, he wasn't played when he was with the Canadian squad, but he's had that experience as well.
08:44So it's an interesting one.
08:46I think as well, Matt Swiffer will be a really interesting one.
08:49The other sign that we got from Feyenoord, he looks like a really strong player, quite a tall player as well.
08:55He's about six foot two. He's quite an imposing figure.
08:58And he's another player that looks to be hopefully a key starter when he does get fit and he does have the minutes in the Premier League.
09:06So I think it will be another opportunity for that.
09:09And I do think that we'll see the likes of Jakuba Minta again just to give him more time and more minutes to adapt.
09:17And also I think that link up with the two Feyenoord teammates previously would be an interesting link up to see.
09:26And to see their chemistry on the pitch would be quite an interesting one to see in pre-season before we get straight into it with the Premier League action.
09:34And finally, Darren, very, very quickly.
09:36I don't know how true this is, but it's been widely reported that Brighton reject an £8 million off from Napoli for Billy Gilmore last week.
09:43£8 million, if it is true, seems like a derisory offer for Gilmore.
09:47What do you make of the rumours and is there any truth in it?
09:52You're on mute, Darren.
09:55Sorry, Chas. Yeah, it was.
09:58It was confirmed by the Brighton chief executive, Paul Barber, that they had an offer for Billy Gilmore from Napoli.
10:08Brighton want to keep him.
10:10We haven't heard as yet whether Napoli are prepared to come back and offer more.
10:16There was talk of them coming back with a bid for £12 million.
10:20But as of Tuesday, nothing had happened.
10:24I haven't heard anything since. Whether anything's happened in the interim period, I'm not sure.
10:29But the last Barber said was on Tuesday they had an offer for £8 million.
10:33It was rejected and he was emphatic in his response that they want to keep Gilmore.
10:39They say he's a good character.
10:41He's just coming into his own now as well.
10:44He had a good season last season and I was expecting him to really kick on this year and be a key player for Brighton.
10:52So I think that they want to keep him.
10:55And if they did sell him, he's got two years left on his contract.
11:00He's experienced. He's still very young.
11:03You'd be thinking in today's market, you'd be looking at around about £25 to £30 for a player like Gilmore.
11:11So maybe even more, but I think £8 million is a bit cheeky.
11:16£12 million is still way, way below what you would expect to achieve for a player like Gilmore.
11:24But my belief is I think Brighton should keep him.
11:27They want to keep him.
11:28And I think he will be a very good player to have in that team alongside Carlos Boliva and Wiffer going forward.
11:36So hopefully he stays. But who knows?
11:39You never know. It just depends how much they're prepared to raise that bid.
11:45Yeah, I think they'd be mad to let him go and maybe even madder to let him go for £8 million, wouldn't they?
11:49But as you said, we'll have to wait and see, won't we?
11:52Thank you very much, Chaps.
11:53We're going to take a quick break.
11:54And when we come back, we are going to talk All Things Crawley Town.
11:58Welcome back to the second half. We will take a look at All Things Crawley Town.
12:01And they've been very busy in the transfer market once again since the last podcast, bringing in three new faces.
12:07The first of them, goalkeeper Jojo Wallachot, has been brought in from Hibbs.
12:11What do you make of the signing, Sam Morton?
12:13Do you think he's going to be Red's first choice keeper going into a new campaign?
12:17Yes, I think he will be. Yeah, there's been a lot of excitement about this on social media, actually,
12:21with many fans calling it a top-class signing.
12:25He's an excellent keeper with good distribution, I've heard as well.
12:28So that should suit Lindsay's side really well.
12:31And the 27-year-old keeper has struggled with injury in his career.
12:36He's played 11 times for Ghana and joins the Reds in a two-year deal from Scottish side Hivernian.
12:42He's also got experience of playing with Charlton and Swindon.
12:45And it was at Swindon where he actually played under Scott Lindsay.
12:49And Scott, speaking about the move, said it's such a great signing for the club.
12:52He's a great goalkeeper.
12:54But first of all, he's a great person and somebody who will understand the culture straight away.
12:58He said he worked with him before at Swindon and he was fantastic in the period they worked together.
13:02He acknowledged that Charlton probably didn't play as much as he would have liked and injuries got in the way.
13:06But he's confident that the medical team at Crawley can ensure that he's on the pitch for most of the season, if not all of it.
13:12So I think that does give an idea for how highly Lindsay thinks of him in the sense that he kind of wants him to play all season.
13:19I think he will be the first choice.
13:22He's obviously got a lot of experience in football.
13:26So I think he definitely will be the go-to goalkeeper this season.
13:30And he did play a part in a 2-0 victory over East Princeton, which was Crawley's second game of preseason.
13:36And he started again in the defeat at Wilston.
13:39But he wasn't actually in goal when the goal was scored in the second half.
13:42So, yeah, I think it's a good sign for Crawley.
13:45And he's spoken himself about how much he's looking forward to getting started, to working again with Scott.
13:51And he said that was actually a big attraction for him because of how much he enjoyed working with him at Swindon.
13:56And he's given him advice and kind of, yeah, he's just looking forward to having a successful time at Crawley.
14:02And hopefully he can stay fit.
14:04Absolutely. Well, hot on the heels of Wallachot, Monday saw Crawley strike up Mohamedou Fal on a six-month contract.
14:13How big of a boost will Fal be to the Reds front line, Sam?
14:16I cover Horsham for the County Times and they played Enfield, who had Fal at the time.
14:21And he scored an absolute bucket full of goals.
14:24Yeah. How big of a boost do you think he'll be? And are you surprised by the length of his contract?
14:28It's a bit odd for me that he's only been given a six-month contract.
14:32Yeah, it's a bit of an unusual one, isn't it?
14:33But I think maybe it's kind of, they're looking at it from the point of view that he's got very limited football league experience.
14:39And I think he played for Bolton very briefly, but he hasn't actually played in football league since 2021.
14:46And he's played lots of games and scored lots of goals in non-league.
14:49And maybe they're just not too sure how he will get on in the football league.
14:52So they're going to give him six months to see how he gets on, I suppose, in a bit of a low risk kind of move.
14:57And if he impresses, I'm sure that would be extended.
15:00But there has been a bit of a mixed reception on social media with some of his former team fans saying there's a quality player there.
15:06But maybe not. Maybe they're a bit doubtful whether he can replicate that in the football league.
15:11As it is obviously a huge step up for the 27-year-old.
15:14As I mentioned, he's not had a lot of football league experience.
15:17He began his career at Chingford-based Ryan before completing a scholarship at Boreham Wood in 2013 and 2015.
15:25He also went on to have a short spell in Italy before returning to the UK to play for several non-league sides.
15:30And he was very prolific for Kingstonian and later Enfield, where he scored 24 goals in 25 games, as you say.
15:37So, yeah. And I think later on he scored, when he rejoined Enfield from Bolton, he scored 35 goals in 43 matches.
15:44So, yeah, lots of goals. I think that hopefully will be something we'll see from him in a Corbyn Townshire as well.
15:50So he personally said he's buzzing to get the deal over the line.
15:53It's been something he's been waiting to do for a while. He's had lots of highs and lows in his career,
15:57but it's definitely the time to jump into the football league.
15:59He's gained a lot of experience in his career and taken lots of lessons forward.
16:03And hopefully he can be a success.
16:05And as I say, I think if he does impress, that six-month contract will probably be extended.
16:09And Scotland, he does have the Midas touch for non-league players, doesn't he, Sam?
16:12So it all sounds very positive, doesn't it?
16:14It does, yeah.
16:16Wednesday, third and final signing saw former Scotland under-21 international Max Anderson join the Reds from Dundee.
16:24I've put, do you see him as a replacement for Liam Kelly, Sam?
16:27But I think that might be a little bit unfair because I must admit I don't really know much about him.
16:30But he does seem very highly thought of at Dundee.
16:32You look at his CV and he's won two Young Player of the Year golds during his time in Scotland.
16:37Yeah, no, absolutely. You obviously mentioned Liam Kelly.
16:39And I suppose the hope is that he would just fill that kind of role in the midfield.
16:45Obviously, it's a very, very big shoes to fill.
16:48But he's, as you say, he's not got experience in English football.
16:53So he's probably a big step up in that sense from the Scottish League to League One of English football.
16:58And so, yeah, hopefully he can settle down quickly.
17:01The 23-year-old has signed an initial two-year deal with the Reds.
17:05He came through the academy at Dundee from the age of 11, making 93 senior appearances, scoring eight goals.
17:11But he actually spent last season on loan at Inverness, Caledonia and Thistle, making 31 league appearances.
17:17They were relegated to the Scottish League One.
17:20But I don't know how much of that was down to him because he clearly has got a lot of pedigree,
17:24winning the Young Player of the Year award twice at Dundee.
17:27So, yeah, just obviously not too sure why he was loaned out,
17:30maybe because they just sort of maybe get some more first team experience.
17:33Maybe he wasn't playing regularly for Dundee.
17:36Now, obviously, they've seen fit to send him to Crawley.
17:39But it's a big move for him to play in League One.
17:43Hopefully he can really impress and show why he was so highly thought of at Dundee.
17:49He's also represented Scotland under 21 level.
17:52And I read that he's also played alongside Charlie Adam before as well.
17:55He's obviously a bit of a cult hero of the Premier League.
17:57So hopefully he's picked up some experience from him and know-how.
18:01But, yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how he gets on.
18:04And he's another one that's buzzing to get the move sorted.
18:08He seems like a really great club to be at and one that develops players really well.
18:12And he's just spoken about how much he enjoyed speaking to Scott Lindsay
18:16and how much really good energy he gave off and how he's looking forward to being developed as a player.
18:21And he just can't wait to get going. So, yeah, I think another exciting signing for Crawley.
18:25Absolutely. The Reds have also been in pre-season action this week.
18:30Jay Williams and Atreides were on the score sheet as Crawley won 2-0 at East Winstead,
18:33as you mentioned, Sam, on Saturday.
18:35And it sounded like it was a relatively comfortable day at the office for the Reds.
18:38Yeah, exactly that, really. I think it was a comfortable win.
18:41But Scott Lindsay, as ever, the perfectionist, said they could be more clinical.
18:46He said he really enjoyed the game. He dominated the ball for large periods.
18:49He likes it a lot. But he said he would have liked to have seen his side be a bit more sharp and clinical in the final third.
18:56With the amount of dominance they had, he felt that they should have been more than 2-0, I think.
19:00And I think he wants his players to be a bit more aggressive.
19:04But he acknowledged, obviously, it's only the second game of pre-season.
19:08So I think you're just going to see improvement as the games go on.
19:12And the fact they've not played football for six, seven weeks,
19:15they're just getting used to being on the football pitch again, I think, really,
19:19and getting that understanding. At the end of the day, they're all very new to each other.
19:23It's a completely new team that he's having to kind of mould and deal with.
19:26So he's learning more from these players each game.
19:29I think it was a good start, a good 2-0 win. And hopefully, as time goes on,
19:33they'll be more clinical and we'll see those relationships build in the squad.
19:38You mentioned their players getting to know each other. I think this is kind of linked.
19:42Crawley then travelled to National League outfit Wildstone on Tuesday night and slipped to a surprise 1-0 defeat.
19:47But you can't really read too much into that, I think, because looking on Crawley's website,
19:52it said Scott Lindsay opted to play one squad for an hour and another for half an hour.
19:56So despite the result, you can't read too much into it, I think. So I don't know if you agree.
20:00Yeah, I agree. I think results are not really that important in pre-season.
20:03I don't think, obviously, as I say, it's about experimenting with the tactics
20:06and the coaching staff learning more from what the players can do.
20:10As I say, it's a completely new team, isn't it, that Scott Lindsay is having to build for the second time of doing so.
20:17So I think, yeah, there's a lot to learn about these players and what they can do.
20:21But Lindsay actually said it was a step up in opposition. It was a really good test and quite a hard game in many ways.
20:28He thought they dominated large parts without really testing the goalkeeper.
20:31They had lots of the ball. We didn't really hurt them.
20:34He said they spoke at half time about certain moments to try and get in behind the defensive line or down the sides.
20:39He thought they did probably a little better inserting the first 20 minutes of the second half.
20:44Then they had to make those changes after 60 minutes and put out six try lists.
20:48He actually said he liked some bits of the second half and it was a really good test.
20:52But he wanted the boys who started the first half to get at least 60 minutes in and it was just a really good exercise for them.
20:57So I think that is the main thing in pre-season is getting minutes into the legs and getting them prepared for the season when results is the important thing.
21:05But he did, once again, say they fell short in the final third.
21:09And he said they're actually an age off where they need to be in terms of scoring goals and they didn't really threaten in the game.
21:16So, yeah, that's probably one that it seems like a real focus in pre-season is to get those forward players firing.
21:23Well, speaking of a step up in opposition, this Saturday sees Crawley entertain Crystal Palace in their only pre-season game at the Broadfield Stadium before the new season.
21:33Yourself and Henry will be in attendance covering the game for Sussex World's Sam.
21:37How much are you both looking forward to that one?
21:39And do you think you'll get a glimpse of England's stars, Dean Henderson, Mark Gay, Adam Wharton and Eberichie Eze?
21:45Yeah, I'm really looking forward to this one, actually.
21:47I was at the same fixture in pre-season last year when Palace visited Crawley and Eze was playing on the day and he ran rings around the Crawley defence.
21:56It was a sight to behold.
21:58Really, he really saw how quality of a player he is and why he was eventually chosen for England.
22:04I don't think he'll play again this time because he did come in for a couple of games for England in the Euros.
22:09And I'm assuming that they're going to be giving an extended break, I suppose, to his teammates at Palace.
22:14I'm not too sure. They weren't involved in the previous friendly against Charlton.
22:18So, yeah, I don't think we'll probably see any of those.
22:21But if we were to, I'd love to see Adam Wharton because he's been superb for Palace when he came in and really just shone in every game he played.
22:32It was a shame he didn't get a chance for England.
22:34But obviously, Cobby Manning deserved his place in the midfield alongside Benningham Rice.
22:38It was a very difficult midfielder to get into.
22:41But I'm sure we're going to see much more of him in an England shirt going forward.
22:45But I think there'll be some big names on show for Palace because their big summer signing, Dyche Kamada, was on the pitch against Charlton.
22:53And he performed well after his move from Lazio.
22:56Oddson-Edouard was on the pitch.
22:58But it was Jordan Ayoub, Tarek Mitchell, Rob Holding and Sheikh Doukouro all played as well.
23:02So I think those players are probably ones we can expect to see against Crawley.
23:07But Mateta is away with France at the Olympics.
23:10We probably won't see him.
23:13But I think there's definitely room for excitement.
23:15And hopefully, Crawley can really have a good test against a good Palace team at the end of the day because they ended last season on such a high, upon loads of games in a row.
23:24And they'll be looking to continue that this season.
23:26So I think a really good test for Crawley to see where they're at, see where the new players are at.
23:30And yes, again, really looking forward to watching.
