00:00This Tuesday, small groups of young protesters attempted to organise an anti-corruption march
00:06to the Ugandan parliament in Kampala.
00:08The security forces, including soldiers and plainclothes police officers, mobilised by
00:13the hundreds to block the city centre and prevent gatherings.
00:17Dozens of people were arrested and many Ugandans refrained from participating, fearing violence
00:23which local police are regularly accused of.
00:25At the end of 2020, at least 54 people were killed during protests.
00:30Since then, many have shied away from large gatherings, wary of potential brutality.
00:35The young organisers, inspired by the Kenyan movement, accuse the political class of corruption
00:40and demand the resignation of the Speaker of Parliament, implicated in several embezzlement
00:46cases.
00:47We are one East Africa.
00:48Their blood is our blood.
00:49Their protests have given us the courage to come out and stand for our rights as well.
00:50The youths in both countries, in both Kenya and Uganda, share similar problems.
01:02So there has been cohesive inspiration.
01:07So we've drawn inspiration from the Kenyans because their problems are similar to ours.
01:15The protesters also want to reduce the number of MPs, currently over 500, and are calling
01:21for audits of their lifestyles deemed too luxurious.
01:25The MPs were resuming their activities this Tuesday after a break.
01:29A few of them called for the protests to be authorised.
01:33Some main opposition figures, including Bobby Wynne, did not take part in the rally.
01:38Three deputies from Wynne's party were arrested the day before the protest and are still detained.
