00:00Well hello and an exceedingly warm welcome to I think probably the nicest place I've ever been
00:06in my life as you can see a lake a German lake behind us that's lovely he was telling me about
00:14five minutes ago how if this weather happens again we'll get he's getting in there so we'll
00:18make sure we get that on on the video and that's going on the next one no one needs to see that on
00:24the internet I probably should that much um Joe we are here day two in Germany day got all this
00:31track day four yeah of the uh second of Sheffield Wednesday's pre-season camps um there's a lot
00:40going on we had a busy day yesterday certainly did certainly did well I had to you know if we
00:44get our culture in today didn't we come to a lovely German German lake and we uh we had a
00:50currywurst as well for lunch which was tremendous um and and I'm going to point out
00:57yeah we ordered some chips yes the one food I don't like is mushroom yeah and you guaranteed
01:04to me that truffle wasn't mushroom yeah it turns out I don't know I'm talking about
01:08um I don't like yeah I do like truffles did not know it was a type of mushroom
01:14should we talk about football yes you shall um so yeah as we said on the recording yesterday
01:20had a great day at the uh the Wednesday training camp a very long and detailed chat with Danny
01:26Royal and some of the players as well and we're going to talk uh in the main today about our chat
01:31with Dishon Bernard whose name has featured in many headlines over the last few weeks
01:38a sort of drawn out to an extent uh contract negotiations but he's back you broke the story
01:45that it's a three-year deal um it feels like good business for Wednesday isn't it feels like
01:50exceptionally good business all around I think you know the the fact that I think I think with
01:55with with Dish and Dish signed the length of his contract as well it feels uh so multifaceted
02:01there's a lot more going on than just a good player signing a new contract I think it's an
02:06indicator for where Wednesday right it's an indicator for the the sort of players that they
02:10can attract because let's have it right Dishon Bernard he was their player but they still had to
02:15attract him to the club you know he's technically a free transfer yeah exactly because he was late
02:21he just had some very good local qualifiers been playing in the Copa America and you know he's
02:27the sort of player well not the sort of player he's the player that one of the players at Danny
02:31Dannyville wanted to make sure that they kept on board this summer so to keep him at Wednesday
02:35feels massive and aside from all that stuff I did just say he's also very very good at football
02:42he's good at football it's his age it's his profile he had a injury concern towards the
02:49the back end of last season but looking at his record you know he appears to be quite robust and
02:55well put together and like I say he's just been to a major tournament and played pretty well I mean
03:00you watch those games what did you make of Bernard he just looks really really tired he
03:05basically played like he played he's played for Wednesday you know he's the sort of player that
03:08you can you can rely on to do various aspects of what you need from your centre back he's you know
03:13he's like you say he is robust he does put himself about but he's also got that that sort of thing
03:18that Danny's looking for from his defenders where they are able to pick the ball up and carry it and
03:23move the ball forward and progress up the pitch but he's brave you know he's a brave footballer
03:29seen it with Jamaica getting getting his body in the right times the right places when you know
03:35possibly put himself on the line a little bit and that's what Wednesday fans want to see I think it's
03:39one of the things with with Dish is one of the reasons Wednesday fans have taken to him so much
03:44is because of how well rounded he is as a footballer you know he is he's great as a
03:51as a defensive defender but he offers so much more than that he's a good talker isn't he
03:56for a young lad and there's a lot made of the the players that come from big academies and
04:02obviously he spent time at Chelsea as a as a youngster where he would have been media trained
04:07this is how they do it you know at a really young age obviously spent a lot of time at Manchester
04:11United broke into the fringes of their first team squad what what struck me the first time we spoke
04:16to him had been 22 at that time was how confident and assured he was and that's something that you
04:21see in a young footballer yeah absolutely and I think another thing that's that's really
04:25interesting with with the conversations you have with with Dish is that um his his answers seem
04:31measured like they're actually they're thought out rather than yeah um you know so just throwing a
04:36load of cliches at you which some footballers do and there's no nothing wrong with that but it is
04:40nice to to hear someone especially someone of his age like you say he's able to to get his points
04:46across the way that does I thought one of the really sort of refreshing things to hear with
04:50Dish yesterday was was how honest he was about sort of his decision and the fact that you know
04:55I think it would have been very easy for him to come out and go yeah no I was always going to
04:58sign it Wednesday you know it was never it was never an issue and it was just a case of that
05:02we had tournaments to play but you know he was telling us how you know he had he had a big
05:06decision to make it's he's 23 years old he had to be sure that he was making the right decision
05:10especially if he's going to sort of sign a long-term deal put down some roots he said he
05:14was speaking to his family his friends his agents like there's so many things involved in a decision
05:19like that especially for someone who is so young and like I say I think it was it was really
05:24refreshing to hear him sort of talking in a way where he was trying to give us a a bit of an
05:31insight into his thought process it's been interesting speaking to a lot of the new signings
05:35and and speaking to Danny himself this summer about the the amount of detail the amount of
05:41work that goes into the personal relationships building yeah and yeah Danny talks about the
05:46human side yeah the human side and and signing the players speaking to Max Lowe and we'll speak
05:51about that in a in a future edition of a podcast video whatever it is um he spent two hours on
05:58you know we know from Jamal Lowe it was over an hour yeah Danny Rowe was speaking to Deshaun
06:04Bernard throughout the Cup of America yeah yeah um and and cleverly not about him re-signing
06:10for Wednesday he was critiquing his performances and it's those little touches that yeah I've never
06:15really really impressive aren't they yeah and I think that he seemed to recall him saying you
06:19might be wrong but he seems to recall him saying that he purposely you know they'd agreed that
06:25we're not going to talk about your future you go focus on your tournament go have as good a
06:30performance with with Jamaica with like say with the qualifiers and the Copa as you possibly can
06:35and then we'll we'll talk and it seemed to work because you know as with practically everyone
06:41else we've spoken to the uh the name Danny Rowe certainly played a big part in uh you know signing
06:49players re-signing players you know the new contracts with even you know people like Barry
06:54and Liam and then the old the older guard it feels like Danny as a as a person and then what he can
07:01bring to the table uh but also the the vision that he has I think for for where he wants to go
07:08I think it's worth saying obviously a big plus in terms of that backline Danny said that he wants
07:12to be able to have the flexibility to play with four at the back yeah with three or five at the
07:17back um and and Dishon Bernard has shown himself to be capable in both slots I mean there's going
07:24to be more business done where do you think the defense is at well I think fullbacks wise we were
07:30talking to Danny yesterday he sort of started saying off started off by saying oh there might
07:35be an option I think you've asked him about wingers yeah he said there might be a you know
07:38there might be a space there up front there might be a space there and then just kind of went
07:42midfield defense goalkeeper yeah basically everywhere they are not done they're certainly
07:46not done um but defensively I think you know that with the work that they've done it's going to be
07:51for me it's going to be interesting to see what they look at in terms of whether they're looking
07:56to offload as well and they do have a fair number of centre-backs now you've also got people like
08:03you know Domai Orfa who we've seen him play centre-back we've seen him play right centre-back
08:07we've seen him play you know right right back right wing back and same with Liam Palmer you
08:12know he's a he's a player that has brought so many different elements to his Wednesday career and
08:17you know playing in the sort of the double pivot against Salzburg it looks like we might see that
08:22again from from Liam Palmer so he's a player that can can drop back into that you know you probably
08:28wouldn't play Liam as an out and out centre-back but you can certainly play him as a right
08:32centre-back so I think defense wise they've they've got options I think what may happen is we
08:38might see people go depending on what else Danny can bring in. We know that Wednesday they're going
08:44to play from the back and they're going to play from the back in a way that we haven't seen
08:49Wednesday them before there's obviously a conversation last season and Dishon Bernard
08:54is comfortable on the ball we've been lucky enough to watch a couple of the the training
08:58sessions that have been going through and that's a huge huge focus and feels like Dishon is going to
09:02be a big part of that. Absolutely and I am pretty certain that those conversations will have been
09:07had when they were you know when they were doing that and those conversations with Danny and Dish
09:12they will have been they'll been talking a lot about the role that he's going to play the importance
09:16that he's going to to hold there and I do think that with with Dishon Bernard because of his age
09:23like you mentioned he feels like a player that is not only good for Sheffield Wednesday now but could
09:29be very good for Sheffield Wednesday in the future and he's also a potentially vastly appreciated
09:36asset as well. Well that's the thing with the with the assets and you look at the business that
09:41Wednesday did last summer which was initially sort of kiboshed in terms of how effective it was
09:47it does feel that they are sort of building that and it's something that Wednesday have been
09:52criticised for for a very long time and rightly so. I suppose with these things when it comes down
09:57to the crunch if Anthony Gassama scores 18 goals this season if Dishon Bernard is the best centre
10:05half in in the championship yeah when it comes to next summer and everyone wants to keep hold of them
10:11you know do you sell them that you know and that's why Wednesday have sort of failed before.
10:14Yeah I mean the obvious ones you look at you know Fernando Firstieri I think it's you know
10:19it's well documented that Wednesday Adam Richard another one that they could have and probably
10:24should have in hindsight but it's one of those where you know with Firstieri for instance
10:29Wednesday was sort of riding the press of a wave then if Wednesday had gone and sold them
10:33there would no doubt have been a group of fans maybe not all but a group of fans going oh no
10:37you can't do that. Hindsight is 20-20. Exactly exactly but I think the Wednesday are getting
10:42the first half of it right now you know you look at the players you look at Bailey Kadamata he was
10:47a player that came through the ranks and for a long time Wednesday were just offering you know
10:51one plus ones out with Bailey they went right we see him as a talent for us and if not we want to
10:57protect our assets so they've gone three years for that Bailey's now is worth something and then I
11:03think it's the same with players like Dish now and the fact that they've they've done that with
11:08you know Jimmy Gassama, Anthony Massa but these players that have got a bit of longevity and a
11:14little bit of a little bit of potential Wednesday have shown that they can do the like I say the
11:18first bit right now it's about following through if the right half has come through obviously.
11:23Moving on then to other players in the squad you mentioned Bailey Kadamata there it was interesting
11:29listening to Danny Reuel speak about him as we reported a few weeks ago didn't we that the
11:34interest from other clubs does remain. Danny Reuel thinks highly of Bailey Kadamata.
11:40Certainly does certainly does and I think that I found it was really interesting with listening to
11:45Danny about Bailey was was how he was almost thankful for him like the way that he spoke
11:51about him as as coming in and really really helping the team in a tight spot last season
11:56you know he barely had to step up and as often happens with young players like he had his peaks
12:01and troughs he had his his good moments his bad moments but you know Bailey came in at a very
12:06difficult point before you know Hugbo and Pobeda and those guys came in to sort of take sort of
12:12adding attacking a few attacking options and Bailey stepped up and I think that Danny
12:19really sees something there and obviously other people do as well because he's played
12:24England in the 19s England in the 20s he's been called up for the Jamaican national team
12:29and yeah there is as far as I know there's interest from a number of clubs in the UK
12:35so it's one to it's one to watch it's definitely one to watch and I think it's going to be very
12:39interesting to see how well does he play that out if anything actually sort of solid comes along
12:45materialises. What else Joe the goalkeeping department we gather that Piers Charles has
12:51rejoined the camp from from his international duty? Yeah so Piers is back he's had a busy
12:56summer hasn't he? He's not really stopped he was away the season finished he went away with the
13:02senior team didn't play obviously but he went away with the senior team which will be nice for him
13:06because his brother's there but yeah went for them then he had I'm sure had a little holiday
13:12but then with the under 19s at the European Championships by all accounts gave a very good
13:18account. There's clips online that are quite impressive and people from outside the Wednesday
13:22bubble people from outside of you know Man City fans would have appreciated the name. Another one
13:27on a long-term contract yeah by the way and but yeah he yeah Piers has had a busy summer and
13:33and we're now in a similar situation with him as you mentioned with with Bailey and what lies
13:39ahead for his future look we know how highly rated Piers is but Danny's sort of intimated that
13:45they'll see what happens over the next what is it three weeks see if there's something to be done
13:49with Bailey with Piers sorry and if he needs to be playing then try and find somewhere for him to go
13:54they've got George Shelvey at the moment who is you know still there on on trial Danny we weren't
14:00sure if it was a case of you know they needed a goalkeeper to come in and just Ben Hamer's
14:04injured of course yeah yeah so with Hamer injured and Piers away it we weren't sure if it was just
14:09a case of like you know just have someone to help out but but Danny did say that he's you know if he
14:15fits and it's right then they'll have a look at it. So that's about it really for for today's
14:21edition have we got a name for this i should probably know this we haven't got a name we
14:24haven't got a name for it just enjoy it it's just uh i think it's just Clannon Miller injury i mean
14:28in Austria it's just it's just pure content it doesn't need branding so drink it in yeah and
14:33also just enjoy the best video setting that we will ever do we're not beating this this is as
14:38good as it's gonna get um yeah i'm i think i'm getting in at some stage uh but again that won't
14:44be filmed it's important oh it will it will it's important um but yeah thanks uh thanks again for
14:49joining us uh we've got loads to come over the next few days and building up towards the uh the
14:54friendly against Werder Bremen keep it locked as ever to thestar.co.uk
