00:0028 of 32 NFL teams have reported the training camp as of today.
00:06Hope you enjoyed summer.
00:08You still have another month of it, but football is here as
00:12well. We welcome you back to this Tuesday on the early line
00:16for more teams still need to show up to camp tomorrow.
00:19That's the Atlanta Falcons, the Dallas Cowboys, the Indianapolis
00:23Colts, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, but 28 of 32 in camp,
00:27including a team DRS that showed up to camp in Green Bay,
00:31Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon.
00:34That was the Packers.
00:35Their quarterback, Jordan Love, was there as well, but still
00:39in an ongoing contract negotiation with the Packers brass
00:43and no deal has been reached at this moment.
00:46Jordan Love will not practice until a contract extension
00:51is signed.
00:51This was shared from his representation of Packers GM,
00:55Brian Guttenkunst. All being said, it seems to be an amicable
01:00relationship between the Packers front office and Jordan
01:03Love and his agents, Guttenkunst, sharing with local reporters
01:07yesterday.
01:08They hope to have a deal done in the coming days.
01:12The question really, Donnie, is this, what does the deal look
01:16like? How many millions of dollars will it be for Jordan
01:19Love? And is Jordan Love about to become the highest paid
01:23quarterback and player in National Football League history?
01:28He should, man, because right now he has them over a barrel.
01:30He really does.
01:31I mean, you have a young quarterback that you expect to be
01:34your franchise guy for at least the next decade with a football
01:37team that's expected to do some damage and make a deep run
01:40in the playoffs.
01:41Now, having said that, I like what's going on here.
01:44There's no like animosity between the two sides, and I always
01:47appreciate when it's like, you know what?
01:49Like, I love my guys.
01:50Like, I love the game of football.
01:52I got to be around my guys.
01:53I'm not going to practice on the field because I don't want
01:54to get injured, but I want to be in those team meetings.
01:57I'm going to be around the guys.
01:58I want to be in that huddle.
01:59So when they break and somebody has a question or the backup
02:02quarterback or a wide receiver, they can come directly to me
02:04and show them that still leader.
02:06I'm not going to be working out somewhere in Arizona away
02:08trying to get this deal done.
02:09And also from a Packers perspective, understanding they have
02:12to pay this guy because what would happen here if, you know,
02:15Jordan Love goes, you know what?
02:17I'm going to swing the hammer because I have it right now.
02:19I'm not showing up here and I'll sit out the first four to
02:22five games.
02:23And the Packers are like, you know what?
02:24We think we're giving an honest deal, but miss five or six
02:26games of the season, ruin it for us, and then we'll try to
02:29negotiate. Get this deal done.
02:30Because the one thing that we have learned in the NFL that
02:33is true.
02:34The longer you wait on players you feel are franchise guys,
02:38the more money it's going to cost you.
02:40Make the guy happy, pay him, and you know what that's going
02:42to be?
02:43I doubt it.
02:43Okay, you know what?
02:44Jalen Hurt signed, you know, a couple months ago at this
02:46point at 50 million dollars.
02:48I'm happy with that.
02:49No.
02:49Since the Packers waited, the price of the brick is going
02:52up. He should equal what Joe Burrow has gotten and I don't
02:55want to hear the people out there.
02:56He's not as good as Joe Burrow has showed as much as Joe
02:59Burrow in the NFL.
03:00That's not the point.
03:01It's when you're on the market and when your deal is ready
03:04to get done, the new money sets in here to reset that structure
03:08has no bearing on who's a better quarterback because having
03:10said that you just say, well, why doesn't Patrick Mahomes
03:12make a hundred and fifty million dollars a year because
03:15he's so much better than everybody else.
03:16When his contract continues to come up, he will continue
03:19to reset that bar.
03:20It's Jordan Love's time.
03:21He will be the highest paid quarterback in the NFL when
03:24it's all said and done.
03:26There are so many different wrinkles to this conversation,
03:29but let's start with the financial viewpoint that Donnie
03:31just laid out.
03:33You might not think Jordan Love is a top five quarterback.
03:36You might not believe he is worth more than 45 million dollars,
03:40but you are incorrect.
03:41The reality of the situation with the ever-expanding cap
03:44in the National Football League and the inflation we have
03:47seen specifically at the quarterback position.
03:50Jordan Love is going to get his.
03:52There are six quarterbacks currently that make more than
03:5550 million dollars per year.
03:57Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, Jared Goff,
04:01Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence in chronological order and in
04:05terms of the amount that they make from least to highest
04:09in that 50 million dollar standpoint.
04:11All six of those contract extensions done in the last two
04:15off seasons, Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence signed their
04:19big deals this year.
04:20Goff 53 million dollars per year, T-Law matching Joe Burrow
04:24in annual average salary at 55 million dollars per year.
04:29The highest in the history of the National Football League.
04:31The expectation is that is the floor for Jordan Love probably
04:36surpassing it.
04:37Yes, there is differences in how the deal is structured or
04:40guaranteed rates, but that is the expectation and this is
04:44not a holdout as Donnie mentioned.
04:47He is not in Cabo right now waiting for his new deal.
04:50He is there.
04:51He is in meetings.
04:53I expect this to happen by the time the first week of training
04:56camp is out for Green Bay.
04:59That's the next coming few days and Donnie Jordan Love's
05:03contract position is a little bit more unique than just a
05:06first round draft pick who is about to enter year number
05:09five in the NFL.
05:11He sat on the bench behind Aaron Rodgers in his first three
05:15years in Green Bay after being taken in the first round in
05:18the 2020 NFL draft.
05:20The Packers did not at that point pick up his fifth year team
05:24option, which the organization has to do before the players
05:27fourth year in the National Football League.
05:30That was last season for Jordan Love strong start little bit
05:34shaky in the interim.
05:35But as we go back to the stats Jordan Love was the impetus
05:39for the Packers making the postseason last year final eight
05:42games of the regular season.
05:44Green Bay won six of them in six of those eight games love
05:48through for more than 250 yards and in that final eight game
05:51stretch 18 touchdowns to only a single interception and then
05:57was sensational on the road in Dallas in the upset over the
06:01Cowboys during Super Wildcard weekend more than 270 yards
06:05three touchdowns to zero I and T's it is why the optimistic
06:09future remains for the Packers in the vision of what they can
06:13have at the quarterback spot now with Jordan Love.
06:16Yeah, and also you were hoping to get that bonus of if you
06:19figure Jordan Love was a good quarterback right out of the
06:21gate. Let's reset the timeline and say like maybe Aaron Rodgers
06:23wasn't there.
06:24We have that two three four years of him playing on the field
06:28counting like a million or two million dollars against that
06:30salary cap.
06:31You only got that one sees and now he's really going to ramp
06:33that up.
06:34And again, if you did it over again, you probably would say
06:36the Packers did it perfectly.
06:38We had Aaron Rodgers a great quarterback moved on now.
06:40We have Jordan Love so we didn't really need those two to
06:42three years.
06:42But most of the teams at bank on it like the San Francisco
06:4549ers and Brock Purdy.
06:46They're living it up right now.
06:47Hey, my quarterback counts $900,000 against the cap.
06:50We can splurge elsewhere win a Super Bowl before we even have
06:53to pay this young kid.
06:55Those are the bonus years and quarterbacks contract.
06:57You don't have that now, but certainly nobody's going to
06:59look at Jordan Love this year coming into seem like at us
07:01don't know if he can do it.
07:02It looks like he can do it.
07:03He will be paid accordingly.
07:04Yeah, it looks like he can do it.
07:07He should be the face of the franchise.
07:09I think even the staunchest Green Bay fan that might not
07:12want to shell out all that much money says Jordan Love is
07:16our guy and thus will be paid more on that and around the
07:19NFL next when Jordan Love gets paid.
07:23There will be a very hopeful feeling in Green Bay, Wisconsin
07:27once again last year, not expected to be a playoff team
07:31in the post Aaron Rodgers era and Jordan Love led them to
07:34that playoff spot now expected to be a postseason contender
07:39and maybe even challenge for the NFC North once again 60
07:43cents behind the Lions with a plus 195 price Detroit the
07:47favorites to win the NFC North at plus 135 but minus 172
07:53for the pack to see the postseason for a second consecutive
07:57year under Jordan Love as the starting quarterback.
08:01He's only made 18 NFL starts in his career so I can understand
08:06some of the hesitation perhaps of thinking that Jordan Love
08:10deserves the most money we have ever seen in the history
08:14of the NFL, but Donnie if you're looking at Green Bay from
08:17the outside, you're thinking to yourselves, how do they keep
08:20getting away with this?
08:22They are running on three decades of consistent and successful
08:26quarterback play from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers.
08:29Now to Jordan Love.
08:31It seems as though that is the case for this Packers
08:34organization. Yeah, and I guess that you sort of like, okay,
08:38sometimes the pendulum has to swing back in our favor because
08:40they were a bad football team late 70s all the way through
08:43the 80s. Just a complete punching bag at that point then
08:46stumbled on a great trade for Brett Favre and away you go
08:49with quarterback play that we haven't seen like this.
08:51You're not supposed to have a quarterback that plays like
08:5415 years handoff to another quarterback that plays for 15
08:57years and then strike gold again in the draft with Jordan
09:00Love that shows the sign of a healthy organization that knows
09:03what they're looking for.
09:04Now equating in championships over the past what 30 or so
09:07years with those quarterbacks.
09:08Maybe you figured you should have more than what Favre got
09:11one I believe and then obviously Aaron Rodgers about a decade
09:14or so ago picked up another one.
09:15Maybe you want to have more but they still did that but you're
09:17always looking forward to the future when you know, you have
09:20your quarterback spot sealed up for maybe another decade plus
09:23so shout out to Green Bay Packers should have more championships
09:26under their belt at this point now, but you can't fault man.
09:29This is exactly what you're supposed to do get the quarterback
09:31first and worry about the rest later.
09:33Yeah, Brett Favre winning one during a 1996 season made the
09:38Super Bowl the next year in came up short.
09:42Aaron Rodgers led the Packers to a Super Bowl back in the 2010
09:46NFL campaign.
09:47Aaron Rodgers wearing an Egyptian themed shirt.
09:52Loves the drama shows up to training camp today for the New
09:55York Jets.
09:56One of their other offseason acquisitions.
09:59Hassan Reddick is not there for New York.
10:03The Eagles traded Reddick one of the best edge rushers in the
10:06NFL to Green Bay or to New York.
10:09Excuse me this offseason Philly didn't want to pay Reddick.
10:14He wanted a new deal with the New York Jets seemed as though
10:17it would get done.
10:18It was a conditional third-round pick that could become a second
10:21rounder and rather high-priced acquisition being Hassan Reddick.
10:26He is in the final year of his contract set to make fourteen
10:29and a half million dollars, but hasn't even entered the Jets
10:32facility because it seems the two sides are very far off from
10:36striking a new deal.
10:38And now the fines start to start up and the acrimony is going
10:41to build up because one player is not happy to be there.
10:44And again, he didn't get a chance to dap up his teammates
10:46in the all-season and say, hey, let me sit at the lunch table
10:48and get to know these guys.
10:50He's just going to spring in there a week before and by the
10:52way, what happens if they don't come to an agreement?
10:53He's not sitting out the season.
10:55So he just shows up angry and freelances every game until he
10:58gets his money at this point.
10:59Also, keep in mind when he got traded like what a conditional
11:02third-round pick the Jets stole it.
11:04We have to understand if Hassan Reddick put the word out like,
11:06you know what?
11:07I don't even want to get paid any more money than I have.
11:09Let me just play this season out.
11:10He probably got a first-round pick back because that's what
11:13top-edge rushers are going for but we know you have to give
11:16up the third-round pick and then pay about 20 million dollars
11:19a season.
11:19That's what you wind up with and also keep in mind Hassan
11:22Reddick told the Jets look trade for me.
11:24I bless this decision.
11:25I can't wait to be a jet.
11:26I won't hold out but I do want more money guy never showed up
11:29for one day of work here.
11:30So if you're Joe Douglas, you're like, look, I'm the bad guy
11:33here. You told me you'd show up and work with good faith.
11:35Now, there's a much good faith going on between Hassan Reddick
11:38and the Jets.
11:39Of course the big developments during mandatory minicamp for
11:42the New York Jets back in the middle of June the two absences
11:46Hassan Reddick wanted a new contract and Aaron Rodgers wanted
11:49to see the pyramids of Giza.
11:52Well, he is there today at least at training camp Hassan Reddick
11:56is not good news for the Bengals.
11:58Joe Burrow has been fully cleared for contact.
12:02Just hoping for a fully healthy offseason after only playing
12:06in 10 games last year due to the wrist injury.
12:09And of course the calf injury that he picked up during the
12:11first week of practice at training camp last year for the
12:15Bengals.
12:16The bad news is this will read the quote right now and then
12:20we'll get Donnie's reaction as our two starts on the other
12:23side Bengals owner Mike Brown.
12:26It's not so likely that this is a good time to negotiate with
12:31Jamar Chase.
12:34Calendar is not a thing in Cincinnati.
12:37Donnie's going to have some heat for the Bengals when our
12:40two starts in just a few minutes.
12:42Welcome to our number two on the early line.
12:45There is so much to get to here all across the Sports Grid
12:49Network.
12:50He is Donnie.
12:51I am Ben.
12:52One final look back on the final major championship this year
12:55in men's golf.
12:56That was the open over the weekend at Royal Troon before
13:00we preview Paris Olympic Golf starting next weekend.
13:04Keith Stewart will join us in just a few minutes to do that
13:08plenty of Major League Baseball conversations coming your way
13:11throughout this show the pitching Ninja on the program
13:14for the first time in a while later on in this second hour,
13:18but Donnie we start with football 28 of 32 NFL teams reporting
13:26to training camp by the end of today with the final four to
13:30make it an even 32 at the end of tomorrow.
13:35The Bengals at training camp as of today in Bengals president
13:40Mike Brown on a potential contract extension for wide receiver
13:44Jamar Chase.
13:45We tease this as we headed in to our second hour with your
13:50reaction.
13:51This is the quote in full quote.
13:53It's not so likely that this is the good time to negotiate
13:58the offseason is a better time for that and we're going to
14:01try to keep focused on the football part.
14:04I'm not going to rule anything out, but I will tell you that
14:07the dye has probably been cast and quote from Mike Brown again,
14:13the Bengals send their veterans to camp today officially
14:18ending the offseason for Cincinnati did Mike not know that
14:23at the end of the Super Bowl in the middle of February through
14:27today.
14:28That's considered the offseason Donnie right side.
14:31Once again, the floor is yours.
14:34I'm like, you know, as I was expecting out of this out of
14:36that quote here to be included in there.
14:38You'll like this Ben a pint of blood costs more than a gallon
14:41of gold.
14:41Why isn't that included somewhere in that tweet?
14:43It's for Mike Brown at this point here because it was so
14:46ludicrous that you have to sort of scratch your head and say
14:49what is he actually saying now before I get there to a Joe
14:52Barrow love you.
14:53You are a fantastic quarterback.
14:55You're going to do big things in the NFL.
14:56Heck, you might even be an MVP and or win a Super Bowl in
14:59your time with the Bengals, but I got to tell you this, you're
15:02really bad teammate and you might say Don, that's not fair
15:04to say that like he works hard and he gets injured.
15:06But yeah, he's worth that money and he is but how about this?
15:10You know, who makes you your money Joe Barrow shorts a great
15:12offensive line.
15:13Don't get me wrong there.
15:14But the wide receiving core where I haven't heard you one
15:17time say what T Higgins got to get paid out here.
15:19Jamar chase.
15:20You got to get paid out of here.
15:20Is he just fine being a company man and saying I got my money
15:23and I'm just going to stay out of at this point.
15:25It is your job as the leader of that football team to stick
15:27your neck on the line and say, hey, Mr.
15:29Brown, I understand you paid me here.
15:31You got to pay these guys like this is my core for next day.
15:34You want to win Super Bowls.
15:35They got to be paid and also it's not as if they underperform
15:38they are two sensational young talented wide receivers that
15:42that core is able to maybe mature of next couple years and
15:44do monster things.
15:46I can't believe I haven't heard anything from Joe Barrow.
15:48Take the press conference as training camp starts today.
15:51My one goal is that both of my wide receivers get paid.
15:53That's all I care about and I'm advocating for them.
15:55I haven't heard anything from that.
15:57But now let's get back to Mike Brown being the owner of the
15:59Cincinnati Bengals the way you just handled the T Higgins
16:03situation love to Higgins.
16:04He's great.
16:05Not going to negotiate with it.
16:06You're going to play under this franchise tag and you're going
16:08to like it, which means play for me this year.
16:10I'm not even going to offer you a contract when that that is
16:12up and then you come back and say well, your Mark Chase is
16:15one of the most important things in this franchise.
16:17We have to get this guy taken care of but that's more of an
16:20offseason thing when you just had an offseason and you know
16:23Chase is eligible for an extension.
16:25So now you're going to have T Higgins going hoping to blow
16:27my knee out and Jamar Chase going.
16:28I can't believe this guy isn't paying me now and expecting
16:30me play on this salary when all my best friends in the same
16:33boat are absolutely buying boats themselves because of how
16:37much money that they actually have.
16:39You can't play an offseason worse.
16:41The talent is there to do big things in Cincinnati, but the
16:43management holding the carrot over these players going.
16:46Ha ha ha not this year, buddy.
16:48You'll eventually get it.
16:49This is ridiculous.
16:50What the Bengals are doing.
16:53It's bad business and it could lead to bad football.
16:56If you are Jamar Chase right now, you're like, what is that
17:00quote brother?
17:01Look at a calendar, please.
17:03What happened to March in April in May in June and most of
17:08July before we started just say you're not going to pay me
17:11and we can have this conversation again come next March.
17:15Now Jamar Chase three years in the NFL more than a thousand
17:18receiving yards each and every year offensive rookie of the
17:21year back in 2021 at the wide receiver spot more than 1400
17:26yards 13 receiving touchdowns.
17:30Jamar Chase has been a pro bowler all three years.
17:32The good thing for Cincy from the organ eight organization
17:36perspective.
17:37It's not like Jamar Chase becomes a free agent at the end
17:39of this year.
17:40He the team picked up his fifth year team option before this
17:44offseason got underway before year number four.
17:48He is under contract for two more years, but that's why it
17:51doesn't make fiscal sense.
17:53You know that Jamar Chase is going to rival if not surpass
17:57the number that Justin Jefferson set as the highest paid wide
18:01receiver in the history of the NFL the highest paid non-quarterback
18:05for year 140 million dollars 30 35 mil per year, you know,
18:11that's going to happen.
18:12That's probably the bare minimum you can pay Jamar Chase.
18:15So do it now and average it out over the final two years of
18:19his rookie deal and then it's not so bad.
18:22It's what Miami did with Jalen Waddle who is the fifth highest
18:26paid wide receiver in the NFL is he a top five wide receiver
18:30like Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson or Amon Ross St.
18:34Brown or Tyreek Hill or AJ Brown?
18:37Probably not.
18:37Is he darn good?
18:39Yes, but you paid Waddle now to make it more friendly to the
18:43organization over the final two years on average of his rookie
18:48deal.
18:49You want to run a front office someday?
18:52I do you put me on and again like we're looking at the Bengals
18:56overall and when you talk about running the front office, like
18:59it's the Brown family is running everything.
19:01There is like I honestly believe like deep down Mike Brown
19:03sitting in his office going like man, you know, we great if
19:05Jamar Chase was terrible this year and we can save a lot of
19:08money trying to renegotiate with them next year as opposed
19:10to saying what happens if Jamar Chase goes out this year with
19:13a healthy Joe Burrow for 17 games and puts up 1,800 yards
19:17and 16 touchdowns.
19:19I can't wait for that negotiation.
19:20He goes, you know, you could have had me last year about
19:2227 and a half million a year now with 37 and a half million
19:25this year and also from a negotiations tactic.
19:28If you're an agent of Jamar Chase, you just watched how
19:31T Higgins was handled here by saying you're going to play
19:35out your contract.
19:36Then I'm going to tag you then I'm going to wish you luck
19:38not securing that.
19:39So when Mike Brown says, I really can't wait to sign Jamar
19:41Chase.
19:42What does he actually mean?
19:43You're going to sign at my price and I got you still for
19:45two more years.
19:46Then I can tag you on top of that.
19:48It's such a bad business because again, if you're being
19:51smart with your money, you pay the guy now if he has a good
19:54season that contract is going to be 40 million dollars more
19:57expensive next offseason than it is right now.
20:01So it's being a terrible businessman unless you're saying
20:04I'm going to make money regardless of what my payroll is
20:07if I keep it low and Jamar Chase isn't good this year.
20:09I can reap it which is the complete wrong.
20:12You hope Jamar Chase gets 2,000 yards and you know why he
20:15gets the 2,000 yards because you already paid him and you
20:17don't have to renegotiate for four or five years down the
20:19road just horrible business 101 and absolute fail for the
20:23Brown family in the Bengals.
