00:00Yesterday was the final round of the fourth and final major championship this
00:04year in men's golf. Xander Shoffley takes two of them. The PGA Championship, the
00:09Open Championship. It was Scotty Scheffler that started his dominant run
00:13with his second green jacket in the past three seasons at Augusta National, at the
00:18Masters, and of course Bryson DeChambeau at the United States Open. And Charlie
00:23Hulme's neck of the woods down there in North Carolina. So those are the four
00:27major winners. American men in all four for the first time since 1982. But one of
00:33the stories this year, Charlie, in major championship golf was the U.S. Open.
00:38Bryson DeChambeau's try-up and Rory McIlroy's disaster down the stretch. Of
00:45course, missing two four-footers in his final three holes that cost him an
00:49opportunity at the United States Open. As we shared entering this week, if he did
00:55not win at the Open, the decade-long drought in major championships would
01:00continue to an 11th year. Rory missed the cut, did not even play the weekend at
01:05Royal Troon. What's the issue for Rory? What has been plaguing McIlroy from
01:11getting back in the winner's circle at a major championship? You know, it is such
01:16an interesting case and it was just wild to me to hear the comments he made on
01:21Friday after missing the cut, where there's this duality of Rory where you
01:26love his honesty and his transparency and his humanness, really. It's like you
01:31don't come to expect that all the time from these elite athletes that are so
01:34carefully managed by their teams and won't say anything controversial in the
01:38press. And being on the media side of things, you know, you hear a guy say,
01:41yeah, I was 22 holes in and I was thinking about where I was gonna go on
01:45vacation. It's just, it's startling to hear that from a guy that, you know, is
01:50the second ranked player in the world, you know, or second or third, I'm sorry,
01:54but second shortest odds to win this tournament. And so for me, it was, it was
01:59just strange the whole week for Rory, you know, it should have been one where he
02:03was a good course fit, um, you know, where, where he's used to these sort of
02:07links conditions and has won open championships before. So it should have
02:11been a week where he could have broken that streak and, and bounce back from
02:16that U. S. Open loss in a way that was convincing and kind of got people
02:19believing in his talent again. But instead we're left with a miscut and
02:23sort of wondering what the future holds for him. I mean, I think that as strange
02:28as it might sound because because the guy's got all the talent in the world,
02:31it just pops off the page and off the tv screen when you watch him. But this
02:36week to me was a mentality thing and I'm not so certain that it's just a
02:41boiling over of the loss at the U. S. Open at Pinehurst and also just some of
02:45the off course stuff with him. Like it's, it's been difficult in so many ways
02:48for the last couple of years, some of it in his control, some of it out of
02:52his control, the whole, you know, negotiations with live and the piff and
02:55the way the tour has used him as sort of a figurehead. So I give him a pass on
02:59some of that stuff and the critique of his caddy and game strategy, all that
03:04type of stuff. It's a very complex thing and he's just got to get his head
03:07right because it's just he has, he should be winning majors at this point
03:11in time and he has the talent to go out and do it no matter how old he's
03:15starting to get into his mid to late thirties. But it's just a strange
03:18headspace thing in my opinion. Yeah, you take a look at this charlie too
03:22because you look at Rory McIlroy 35 years old, he's got another decade to
03:25be in his prime and win contest here. The issue that we have now is tiger
03:30woods, he's not in his prime, he doesn't have another 10 years and we had you
03:33on last week and I think your thought process was right. It wasn't as if we
03:36expected tiger woods to win anything this weekend, but if there was a golf
03:39tournament, he should be able to be competitive and maybe make it to the
03:42weekend. This should have been one tiger woods plus 14 misses the cut the
03:47future. Certainly not as bright as it once was even a couple of years ago
03:50where he thought he could come back and sort of make a run and say, could he
03:53catch lightning in a bottle? I don't have lightnings left to get in a bottle
03:56now charlie, it's it's a tough one to watch and you hate it when call
04:01Montgomery says something as edgy as you did and he gets proven right in a
04:04way and I'm not going to go that far. I will never ever doubt tiger until he
04:08tells us, hey, I'm hanging it up. But I mean you just flash the scores up there
04:12and the one that's actually the most interesting to me is the one where he
04:14made the cut where the masters, he finished the 60th. But look at the
04:18scores here. It's his worst score to par of all of all the four majors. And
04:22to me it's like that is what that's our best case scenario, right? Is that he
04:27makes the cut at majors and then you just shoot a million on the weekend
04:30because it's just, it's such a tough physical test. And so I just, it's
04:35really up to tiger. He can hang around as long as he wants. He brings a lot of
04:38eyeballs to the telecast and I am completely fine with him playing in
04:42this as you know, as poorly as he has been playing. But at a certain point
04:45of time, he's got to make a decision for himself and I'm the optimism I hold
04:49is I think he's going to play some champs tour events and I think that's
04:52going to be a lot, a lot of fun. Three rounds in a cart and tiger playing with
04:56his peers from back in the day. I think that's going to be a great watch.
05:00Maybe that's our hope for tiger woods because at the major championships, not
05:05so much. We'll talk olympic golf. It's not even this weekend. It's next
05:09weekend over in france. So we have plenty of time and charlie, you will
05:12now please go take a nap and rest up. We appreciate all the time this
05:17weekend at the open champs. More tbl to come.
