00:00We need a meet queue. Like, every great romance has a meet queue.
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at the best of what Netflix has to offer in the romance department.
00:11In the interest of keeping things centered, we'll only be considering the streaming service's original content.
00:17When you are in the moment, things just fall into place.
00:23Number 30, The Night Before Christmas.
00:25What do you think of these awesome new threads?
00:27They're straight fire.
00:30Um, what happened to Alexa?
00:33I could not make her stop, so I banished her to the night air.
00:35A melding of Christmas and fantasy? Yes, please.
00:39Vanessa Hutchins and Josh Whitehouse excel in their roles as a modern day teacher and a medieval knight.
00:44Might I inquire as to a tub and a cauldron so that I can boil some water for a bath?
00:51How about I just show you the bathroom?
00:53This movie employs all the right rom-com cliches,
00:56with its endearing observations of the modern world making it a step up from your typical holiday hallmark movie.
01:02How is it permissible to call one's friend mom, dad, king, queen, babe, sis, bro, or bae?
01:07While it's not reinventing any movie wheels,
01:09it sets out to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and certainly delivers.
01:13For those of us not yet ready to give up the daydream of being rescued by a knight in shining armor,
01:18tonight we feast.
01:20Number 29, Irreplaceable You.
01:23If you're looking for a feel-good pick-me-up, this probably isn't the one for you.
01:27For the rest of us who like a good cry-fest, we should definitely add this movie to our watch list.
01:40We've got childhood friends to lovers, an engagement,
01:43and a story about what it means to live with a terminal illness.
01:46The ending is spoiled within the first few minutes,
01:49so the film spends the rest of its time taking us through the motions.
01:53Though some felt certain plot points and the overarching message
01:57could have been expanded on and handled better,
02:00Irreplaceable You takes an oddly pleasant approach to an otherwise time-worn plot.
02:05With Victoria Justice at the helm,
02:07a perfect pairing hits all the roles we were hoping for.
02:31It's not a care that changed boots,
02:33The perfect pairing hits all the rom-com beats, but fear not, it's more naturally-acted than your typical Hallmark TV movie.
02:50We're whisked away to Australia, where Lola tries to prove herself to a potential client in order to financially secure her startup.
02:57Amid the journey, she meets Max, the station boss on her client's sheep farm, who she begins to work with.
03:03Alright, that's why you're snooping around her house.
03:06Um, not snooping.
03:08Let's go.
03:08Sure.
03:09A perfect pairing is as cheesy as they come, so it's a great watch if you're needing something easy and comforting to curl up on the couch to.
03:28This French film flips the patriarchy inside out, and it is incredible.
03:32Damien is chauvinistic, obnoxious, and a total womanizer.
03:36So he's the perfect candidate to find himself in an alternate world where women have dominance over pretty much everything.
03:55Stereotypical gender roles are definitely played up for laughs, and nearly every facet of the movie is pushed to the extreme.
04:01But that's what makes it so great.
04:14Beyond the big feminist theme at its center and how eye-opening it is, the love story between Damien and Alexandra is super fun to watch.
04:24Despite lackluster reviews from some critics, Love Wedding Repeat does exactly what it promises.
04:29It's lighthearted, laugh out loud funny, and hopeful. Everything we want out of a rom-com.
04:47Even though they didn't totally hit it off when they first meet, Jack and his sister's friend Dina don't do anything about it for three years.
04:53Forced proximity at Jack's sister's wedding has them rekindling, albeit not without some champagne-induced hiccups along the way.
05:08Among hysterical what-if scenarios, witty voiceover, and a couple we love to root for, a lot of this movie's magic comes from the unbridled talent of the cast.
05:24Number 25. Candy Jar.
05:36A charming coming-of-age story, Candy Jar follows Lona and Bennett as they compete for the presidency of their two-person debate club.
05:54They're forced to face just how evenly matched they are, and not just when it comes to debate and scholarly ambition.
06:00It's the typical rivals finding out they have a lot in common storyline, but the movie's clever writing, brilliant acting, and big twist give it a lot of merit.
06:09You'll take me straight home?
06:13Let me get a number four with a large fry and a vanilla shake. Do you want something?
06:19Captivating simplicity is Candy Jar's secret sauce, with the superb chemistry between actors Sammy Gale and Jacob Lattimore winning us over every time.
06:28Number 24. Love Per Square Foot.
06:31Praised for its groundedness and believability, Love Per Square Foot tells the story of Sanjay Kumar Chaturvedi and Kareena D'Souza as they enter a joint housing scheme, and do the whole love thing backwards.
06:43People first fall in love, then get married, and then buy a house.
06:47Our beginning was the opposite, wasn't it?
06:50First a house, then a marriage, and you've probably never loved me.
06:55This Indian Hindi language film excels on several fronts, including pace, direction, and score.
07:01Director Anand Tiwari said his goal was to showcase today's India, and focus on the idea of, quote,
07:07whether home is more important than house.
07:13The major strong suit in this film has to be its dialogue.
07:21It's wonderfully natural and effortlessly delivered by every performer.
07:34Number 23. Love at First Sight.
07:43Hadley Sullivan and Oliver Jones meet by complete fluke at an airport after Hadley misses her flight.
07:49The initial spark alone is entrancing enough, but their initial exchanges afterward make it clear that it's not just about physical attraction.
07:57I'm Oliver, by the way.
07:59As in twist.
08:01And they say Americans are uncultured.
08:03Despite being polar opposite type A and type B personalities, they get on really well,
08:08and wouldn't you know it, end up sitting right next to each other on the plane.
08:12These kinds of connections are rare enough, so when Hadley accidentally loses his contact,
08:16the two spend the rest of the movie trying to find each other again.
08:19Narrated by Jameela Jamil, this take on trying for something so uncertain totally grips us from the get-go.
08:27Word to the wise, if you have only a 2% chance of finding love in an airport,
08:32and the boy gives you his number, make sure your phone is properly charged.
08:37Number 22. The Kissing Booth Franchise.
08:46It is impossible to construct a list of the best Netflix romances without talking about the phenomenon that were these movies.
08:52Is it the most refined piece of media around? Definitely not.
08:56You haven't changed. I mean, what is the difference between what just happened?
09:01The difference is you.
09:04You're crazy.
09:05I'm crazy about you, Elle.
09:07But there's something so enticing about Elle and Noah's relationship progression throughout the series.
09:12We get all our favorite cliches and tropes in the first movie alone, and it's enough to keep us hooked.
09:18Well, that and all the drama.
09:19How bad was I?
09:22You were about to strip on the pool table in front of a bunch of guys and then go skinny dipping.
09:27I carried you out before too much came off.
09:30Call it a guilty pleasure, but The Kissing Booth is all mindless fun and hot make-outs, and we are here for it.
09:36Number 21. A Jazzman's Blues.
09:38The poets say that all who love are blind.
09:45But I'm in love and I know what time it is.
09:50While this movie is about so much more than romantic love, the connection between Bayou and Leigh-Anne definitely makes a lasting impression.
09:57You will not ruin this life for us.
10:00Leigh-Anne, I love you. Don't go. Don't go!
10:03From the paper plane through his window to the simplicity of the way these two look at each other, their love is sweet and gentle and true.
10:09Even across time and space, and despite impossible circumstances, Leigh-Anne and Bayou's feelings remain strong,
10:15and you start to think that no matter what, they'll always find each other.
10:19How could I do that when my heart only beat for you?
10:23A Jazzman's Blues is not the easiest film to watch, but it is a touching tale rooted in horrifying reality.
10:30Number 20. The Half of It.
10:32I like Wim Wenders too. Wouldn't it plagiarized him though?
10:36No, who's Wim Wenders? And why do you cheat off of him?
10:39I didn't cheat off of him.
10:40No, I looked up, plagiarized.
10:42It's always gratifying when romance movies show just how messy love can be, even young love.
10:47High schooler Ellie is roped into helping popular boy Paul win over his crush Aster.
10:52The big problem? Aster is also Ellie's crush.
10:55He's always gonna be a murderer.
10:58I'm Ellie too.
11:00This love triangle moves in so many different ways as the characters come to know each other better and form close bonds.
11:06The Half of It feels rooted in reality as it explores themes of grief, poverty, identity, and tolerance.
11:12Aptly cast and well-written, this one is a breath of fresh air in a sea of mush and gush.
11:18And if love isn't the effort you put in, then what is it?
11:29Number 19. Napoli Ever After.
11:32Based on the novel by Tricia R. Thomas, Napoli Ever After focuses on Violet,
11:36a young black woman who's always had a complicated relationship with her hair.
11:40It was an ever-present source of anxiety to prove that I was just as well-roomed as any white child.
11:47They would play, hair uncombed, no shoes.
11:51Her perfectionist mother always encouraged her to straighten it, despite how much work it took,
11:56and she continued these practices into adulthood.
11:58But an incident at a hair salon and the fact that her boyfriend doesn't propose when she expects him to
12:03cause her to re-evaluate everything.
12:05This movie uses Violet's hair as a representation of her inner self
12:08and brings us along on her journey to acceptance.
12:11Number 18. Falling In Love.
12:13If what you're in the market for is a rom-com with a comforting and predictable plot,
12:17look no further than 2019's Falling In Love.
12:20It doesn't try to buck convention or reinvent the wheel,
12:43but it gives us a classic romantic comedy plot with a fun twist.
12:47Gabriella unexpectedly finds herself the new owner of an inn in New Zealand that needs a little TLC.
12:52She's a fish out of water in the charming small-town setting and quickly meets Jake,
12:56a contractor who she ends up partnering with despite their confrontational beginnings.
13:01This story goes exactly where you expect it to, but hey, that's not always a bad thing.
13:05Number 17. All The Bright Places.
13:29Some teen romance movies are frothy and fun, but All The Bright Places,
13:32which is based on the novel of the same name,
13:34takes a look at some of the darker themes that are present in the lives of teenagers today.
13:38Addressing mental health issues?
13:40You definitely have to be ready for the emotional punch this movie is packing.
13:43Following the love story of Violet and Theodore through a turbulent moment in both of their lives,
13:47this film might be heavy, but it's also beautiful and reminds us to appreciate every moment.
13:52I wasn't worried about what would happen if I lived.
13:57I was worried about what would happen if I didn't.
14:02What I would miss.
14:05I worried about not remembering.
14:07Number 16. The Incredible Jessica James.
14:10Have you been on Tinder long or are you just...
14:12Alright, I'm gonna stop you right there because I'm not loving the whole vibe of this interaction so far.
14:16I would literally rather have my period for a thousand years non-stop
14:20than continue this portion of the conversation.
14:22Considering the positive reviews this 2017 film received,
14:25we are genuinely surprised it doesn't have more widespread popularity.
14:28The Incredible Jessica James, starring Jessica Williams,
14:31tells the oh-so-relatable story about two people who come together but who still aren't over their exes.
14:37Featuring some familiar faces and situations that every millennial has encountered,
14:41you can't help but love it.
14:42The titular character of this quirky modern rom-com is magnetic
14:45and leaves you wishing this were a half-hour TV show rather than a one-off film
14:49so you could just keep binging to your heart's content.
14:51You're a very complicated person.
14:53I know. I'm sorry.
14:55No, don't...
14:57You never need to apologize for that.
15:02There's so many other things you could apologize for.
15:05Number 15. Happy Anniversary.
15:07You may recognize Noelle Wells as the primary love interest from the first season of Master of None,
15:12but more recently she was starring in this film.
15:15Morning, beautiful lady.
15:17You're only allowed to say that if you mean it.
15:19I do mean it.
15:20I like you like this. No makeup, just you.
15:23Really? Aww.
15:25But your breath smells like half food.
15:29With an engaging premise and a distinctly indie vibe,
15:31Happy Anniversary takes a look at a couple three years into their relationship
15:35who are deciding whether they should stick it out or call it quits.
15:38The film features a series of flashbacks so that viewers get to experience their relationship right along with them
15:43as they decide how to move forward.
15:45Maybe Molly and I are just too different.
15:47Like, I see the glass of water as half full.
15:50She sees the water as poisoned.
15:52Number 14. Let it Snow.
15:54But above all, snow has the power to bring us together.
16:00And sometimes, just for a moment, and especially on Christmas Eve,
16:06that's exactly what we need.
16:09Released just in time for the 2019 holiday season,
16:12Let it Snow is a delightful Christmas movie that feels like love actually for a modern teen audience.
16:17Featuring a diverse ensemble cast and multiple interweaving storylines,
16:21there's no reason this shouldn't become a December classic.
16:24There's something for everyone here since the romantic subplots all vary wildly,
16:28with other prominent stories about friendship and family included as well.
16:31The book that this flick is based on was a collaboration between some of the biggest names in YA literature,
16:36Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myrickle.
16:39Now I want to tell you something.
16:46I freaked out about it being you for me.
16:54But it is you.
16:56Number 13. When We First Met.
16:58We love a rom-com with a unique and compelling premise.
17:17In this film, Noah, played by Adam Devine, has a one night stand with a girl who he totally falls for,
17:22but she wants them to be just friends after their initial tryst.
17:25Years later, she's engaged to another guy, but he's still harboring feelings for her.
17:29He wants to figure out how he managed to mess things up,
17:32so he uses time travel to relive their night together over and over again
17:36in an attempt to get her to see him differently.
17:49Number 12. Ali's Wedding.
17:50Osama Sami wrote and stars in this film, which he calls the first Muslim rom-com,
17:55which debuted on Netflix in 2017.
18:14Ali's Wedding tells the story of a young Muslim man living in Australia
18:17who faces extreme pressure from his family to live up to their high expectations
18:21and marry the woman who they think is the right match for him.
18:24Unfortunately though, the heart wants what it wants,
18:26so even though he's betrothed, he strikes up a romance with someone else.
18:30It's a movie unlike anything you've seen before, and offers up some diverse representation.
18:35Number 11. The Princess Switch.
18:37Netflix has kind of cornered the market on schmaltzy holiday movies, and we are not complaining.
18:48Maybe, but maybe not.
18:50Come on, Stace. I mean, ever since you broke up with Paul, it's like you're scared to do anything different.
18:56With all of the hardships we're facing in the world today,
18:58sometimes you just want a rom-com that you know is gonna end up with a happily ever after.
19:02In The Princess Switch, a champion baker goes to the small, fictional country of Belgravia.
19:07She realizes that she looks identical to the Duchess of Montenaro,
19:10who is slated to marry the Crown Prince Edward of Belgravia.
19:13The two end up switching places, which gives us not one, but two adorable love stories to follow.
19:26Number 10. A Christmas Prince.
19:28If you were on the internet in the holiday season of 2017, you undoubtedly heard of this movie.
19:44Flake, international playboy, and scandalous socialite.
19:48A Christmas Prince was the subject of countless articles and blog posts,
19:51because of its potential to become a cult favorite, despite the fact that it was, well, pretty terrible.
19:56It seems that the creators of this movie were going for a so-bad-it's-good concept,
20:00and they totally pulled it off.
20:02If you already saw this one, but want to get into the holiday spirit all over again,
20:05try Christmas Inheritance, which has a similar vibe.
20:08Number 9. Tramps.
20:10This definitely isn't your typical romance movie, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth seeing.
20:29Tramps has 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and for good reason.
20:33It manages to take the story of a crime gone wrong, and turn it into a touching romance.
20:37Danny and Ellie are both involved in a botched briefcase swap,
20:40and spend the day together trying to rectify their mistake.
20:42They don't expect things to take a romantic turn, and neither does the viewer,
20:46but the end result will surprise you with how effective it is.
21:01Number 8. Dumplin'.
21:02When it was released on Netflix in 2018, Dumplin' was an unexpected delight to viewers.
21:07This must be your daughter.
21:09Oh, that's Ellen, my daughter's best friend.
21:11This is my daughter, Willadean.
21:13Wow. Okay. So nice to meet you both.
21:17So great meeting you too.
21:18With a mix of Dolly Parton, drag queens, and Jennifer Aniston, what more could you want?
21:23The plot revolves around Willadean Dixon, who's been given the nickname Dumplin',
21:27and her quest to compete in a beauty pageant in her Texas town,
21:30despite the fact that she's plus-sized.
21:32Her mom, played by Aniston, is a former beauty queen herself,
21:35and Willadean has to contend with her mother's lack of belief in her.
21:38Number 7. Someone Great.
21:40One of the best recent films to be created by Netflix is Someone Great,
21:43starring Gina Rodriguez and Lakeith Stanfield.
21:59This dramedy feels fresh and modern,
22:01taking well-worn tropes of romantic movies and turning them on their heads.
22:05The plot takes unexpected twists and turns,
22:07as the protagonist, Jenny, tries to get over her longtime boyfriend breaking up with her.
22:11She's got two friends with storylines of their own to help her along the way.
22:14The tone of this flick shifts quickly from over-the-top comedy to something more contemplative,
22:19and that's what makes it truly something great.
22:21Blair, how about you get the snacks?
22:23Yeah, totally.
22:24And we'll meet you outside.
22:25Number 6. Us and Them.
22:27This high-concept Chinese film earned a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics,
22:32and will pique your interest as soon as you're introduced to the premise.
22:41A young man and woman meet by chance on a train,
22:44and viewers watch their relationship ebb and flow over a ten-year period.
22:48They're sometimes together and sometimes apart,
22:50but regardless of the nature of their relationship,
22:52each scene is emotionally evocative and beautifully shot.
22:58I can't live a hard life with you.
23:00Then how can you think I'm willing to live the kind of life you want?
23:05Yes, you'll have to read some subtitles, but it's totally worth it.
23:08Number 5. Our Souls at Night.
23:10Jane Fonda and Robert Redford star in the Netflix adaptation of Kent Harroff's novel,
23:14Our Souls at Night,
23:15which tells the story of two elderly people who've lost their spouses.
23:18Hello, Lewis.
23:20Hello, Mrs. Moore.
23:22Addie.
23:25Is everything alright?
23:27Can I talk to you about something?
23:29Sure.
23:32May I come in?
23:33Oh, yeah, sure.
23:34They decide to try an arrangement where they share a bed to keep each other company,
23:37but don't necessarily sleep together, if you know what we mean.
23:40Their unconventional relationship is inevitably questioned by those around them,
23:44but viewers get to see the tender and unique bond these two share.
23:48I was telling one, here's another one.
23:50You guys remember the one about the guy that started to have sex again?
23:57Number 4. Always Be My Maybe.
23:59Sasha and Marcus were best friends as kids growing up in San Francisco,
24:03but when they were teenagers, they decided to have sex and it ruined their relationship.
24:07It's a cool thing you laugh.
24:21They are unexpectedly reunited as adults when Sasha has become a famous and super successful chef,
24:26while Marcus is still playing in the same band and working with his dad.
24:29They seem as though they couldn't be more poorly matched,
24:32but there's still chemistry there and they both feel it.
24:34If nothing else, watch this movie for the Keanu Reeves cameo,
24:37which was one of the best things to happen in 2019.
24:52Number 3. Set It Up.
24:53Sometimes you just want a good old-fashioned romantic comedy,
24:56with all the meet-cutes, witty repartee and totally predictable scenarios the genre has to offer.
25:07Set It Up will scratch that itch.
25:09Starring Zoey Deutch and Glenn Powell in the lead roles,
25:12and Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu in the supporting roles,
25:14you know it's going to be charming from the cast alone.
25:17The premise is the two overworked assistants want to set up their bosses in order to make their lives easier,
25:22but obviously not everything goes as planned.
25:24You probably know how this one ends, but that's not really what matters.
25:41Number 2. Alex Strangelove.
25:43We're honestly shocked that more people weren't talking about this teen rom-com when it hit Netflix in 2018.
25:53Wow, you know your cephalopods.
26:01It takes a concept that may feel overdone,
26:03and gives it the modern twist it needs to cater to current teenage audiences.
26:07The premise seems simple.
26:08Two long-time besties decide they want to lose their virginities together,
26:11but Alex begins to question his sexuality after meeting the openly gay Elliot,
26:16who is obviously into him.
26:17The movie follows Alex as he comes to terms with what he really wants,
26:21and it's entertaining every step of the way.

26:52Number 1. To All the Boys I've Loved Before.
26:55You probably could have guessed what our number one pick was gonna be,
26:58but we don't mind being a little predictable when it comes to supporting a film like this one.
27:01To All the Boys I've Loved Before was the talk of the internet upon its release,
27:05and the more views it gets, the more fans it amasses.
27:08Based on a novel by Jenny Han,
27:09this story is about a girl named Lara Jean,
27:11whose secret love letters are unintentionally sent to the boys she wrote them about.
27:22You gonna break my heart, Covey?
27:23What results is one of the most endearing movies to be released in recent years.
27:27Luckily, fans got to see more of Peter and Lara Jean in two sequels.
27:32Break my heart into a thousand pieces.
27:41Do whatever you want.
27:42Which movie restored your faith in love?
27:45Let us know in the comments.
27:47That's the one. That's Mr. Wolfington.
27:50I thought we were gonna call him Donnie.
27:51Yeah, Donnie Wolfington, attorney at dog.
27:54He's a lawyer? Wow.
27:56Do you agree with our picks?
