00:00Recovering from COVID, he says he's ready to get back on the campaign trail.
00:04Despite the ever-growing chorus of Democratic lawmakers calling on the U.S. president
00:09to drop his re-election bid, Joe Biden insists he's staying in the race.
00:13He claims that ordinary voters are on his side,
00:16but opinion polls suggest that nearly two-thirds of Democrats nationwide
00:20say Biden should step aside and let his party nominate a different candidate.
00:25With more, here's our Washington correspondent, Fraser Jackson.
00:30Biden isolating alone in Delaware at his house in Rehoboth.
00:34While the rest of D.C. kind of spins around this,
00:38it's a bit of a metaphorical situation going on there.
00:41There really is a tale of two stories here.
00:44One is public, one is private.
00:46In public, Biden says he's raring to get back on the campaign trail.
00:50His campaign officials say he's not going anywhere.
00:53They actually just released a statement not too long ago
00:55saying, I look forward to getting back on the campaign trail next week
00:57to continue exposing the threat of Donald Trump's Project 2025 agenda
01:02while making the case for my own record.
01:04It must be said, the opportunities he's had over the last couple of weeks to do that
01:09haven't really gone that well in the sense that he hasn't really laid out
01:12the Project 2025 plan, which is a conservative plan to overhaul the government.
01:18He hasn't really laid that out well in the big,
01:20high-profile interviews that he's had on ABC and NBC as well.
01:25And then we are hearing more about in private that actually he's starting to mull over
01:31whether he should leave, and if so, how it should be done, at what time,
01:35and how best to protect his legacy if he does indeed part.
01:39We've been told by sources close to Biden,
01:42which has also been reported in The New York Times, that several people close to him
01:46have said that his resolve really has been shaken by three main events.
01:50One, Nancy Pelosi effectively coming out against him on that Morning Joe interview
01:56a few weeks ago where she didn't really say one way or another which way she was leaning,
02:00but then obviously in private had that discussion with him saying that he could not win against
02:05Donald Trump and that the path is narrowing to victory.
02:08He was shaken by that.
02:10He was also shaken by new state polls that show that he's losing to Donald Trump in key
02:15battleground states, just like Wisconsin, where I just came back from.
02:19The latest projection from CNN on that said that Donald Trump would earn 330 electoral votes.
02:25That is far beyond the 270 needed to win the presidency.
02:29And then the third is that donors are starting to dry up on the Democratic side as well.
02:34That is also said to have impacted him.
02:38Joe Biden's rival Donald Trump says he's spoken by phone with the Ukrainian president
02:42and pledged to end the war with Russia.
02:45Washington has provided tens of billions of dollars in military assistance to Kyiv
02:50since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
02:54A potential Trump victory in the November election has raised concerns about whether
02:59the United States will continue to provide the same levels of financial support.
03:03Trump has repeatedly claimed he would end the war very quickly if reelected
03:09without offering details as to how.
