How to keep your home cool in the summer heat: advises in videographic. VIDEOGRAPHIC
Transcript
00:00When the sun begins to beat down, windows, shutters and interior blinds should all be
00:13shut.
00:14Select clear, bright colours that reflect light and heat.
00:18Open windows at night to allow air to circulate, and evacuate heat that's built up during
00:23the day.
00:25If your home has several floors, open the upper windows to release hot air.
00:29This is known as the chimney effect.
00:32Try suspending a damp sheet in front of a half-open window.
00:36A simple thermodynamic principle is behind the resulting drop in temperature.
00:40When a fluid evaporates, it generates cold.
00:44Wetting floors around or in the house in the early evening has the same effect.
00:49A fan can be made more efficient by placing a bottle containing frozen water in front
00:54of it.
00:55The air that circulates is cooler.
00:58However, there's no point in leaving a fan on if there's no one in the room.
01:01A fan doesn't chill air, it just ventilates it.
01:05Thanks to evapotranspiration, whereby surface water returns into the atmosphere as vapour,
01:11plants can reduce the temperature in a home.
01:14Finally, limiting use of the oven and turning off all non-essential electrical appliances
01:20also helps keep the temperature bearable in extremely hot weather.
