Are you ready for the UK heatwave? Already sunbathers are basking in the year's highest temperatures to date, so we've got some tips for keeping cool from experts at MyBuilder
Transcript
00:00Hiya, my name's Andy Sims, I work for MyBuilder and I am their Trade Advocacy Manager.
00:05So MyBuilder is a place where homeowners meet tradespeople.
00:09We try and help homeowners find the tradespeople they need and we try and help tradespeople
00:13succeed.
00:14Looking at this week then, we've only got a couple of days to prepare, do you have any
00:17sort of those quick and easy cheap hacks that we can implement at home to keep ourselves
00:22cool just in the next couple of days?
00:24You can obviously just shut your windows, that's the number one thing that you could
00:27be doing.
00:28Creating shade is another one, so if you've got sun sails or awnings that you're thinking
00:33about putting up, you can get those up.
00:35Obviously shutters over windows for example.
00:38You can also buy some relatively inexpensive film that goes over your windows which will
00:44keep the heat out and also you can get some kind of reflective finishes and things on
00:48those as well.
00:49When it comes to our windows, we think that keeping them open would be what's advised
00:53but that's not the advice, so why should we shut our windows when it's hot?
00:57I know it's counterintuitive but actually keeping your windows shut is blocking out
01:02that heat.
01:03So if you're opening your windows sporadically throughout the day or leaving them open, yes
01:07you might get a nice breeze every now and then but actually you're allowing that heat
01:11to build up in your home and actually what we want to do is obviously keep those windows
01:15shut and block it out.
01:16With the hot summer becoming the norm, we might want to look at some of those longer
01:20term things that we can put in place, maybe in our gardens and stuff.
01:23Do you have any recommendations there?
01:27For outside in particular, you can do a few things, sun sails, awnings, also pergolas
01:35can give you a bit of shade.
01:37It's basically anything to block out the sun, particularly where the sun is coming through
01:40the windows or French doors of your house and then if you wanted to go a bit further
01:45down the rabbit hole, air conditioning and there is a myriad of different kind of options
01:53for air conditioning, anything from 200 to up to 5,000 pounds if you're living in a big
01:57place and getting everything done.
