00:00Hey guys, another video for our modern Japanese architecture playlist.
00:03Some of you might remember this building. It was four small two-story apartments
00:08and it was being demolished. It was about probably 20 or 25 years old
00:12and we thought they're going to renovate it because they stripped everything off
00:15and we thought they're going to renovate it and they just continued to pull it
00:18apart and just totally demolished it. You might remember it we called this the
00:22hammock video or something like that. Every time we drive past this place now
00:26we talk about the hammock house because we all remember the demolition staff
00:31lying around in their hammock. So the hammock house. So four two-story
00:39apartments about 25 years old so they demolished them.
00:43Usually what we see then is a hole digger like this that comes along and
00:48digs deep holes into the ground at about one or two meter intervals and
00:53they use that to make deep foundations. So that's what we
00:57expected to see next but we didn't. What we saw next was they
01:01just came along and put up the formwork and just laid out a big concrete slab
01:06without actually drilling any foundations at all.
01:08So we actually drive past this place at least a couple of times every day
01:12so there's not much that we miss every time we go past we can see what's going
01:16on. So there was no digging of holes for
01:18foundations so this must be some different kind of construction.
01:22It looks like a sort of a floating island type construction so the next
01:28step was this timber that all seemed to just sit
01:30on top of the concrete slab. So we do know that there are buildings even some
01:36very big buildings in Japan that they make earthquake resistant by
01:39letting them float so it might be one of those. So then of
01:43course they put up the compulsory scaffold and then brought the compulsory
01:47tall crane and the trucks brought in all the pieces
01:50like a big lego thing and they just clicked it all
01:53together like we've shown you before. And guess what they built? So they
01:58demolished four small two-story apartments and they
02:03built four small two-story apartments.
02:07Isn't it amazing? So that other building was well salvageable it was in pretty
02:12good condition it didn't look much different to this.
02:15It was only 20 or 25 years old but instead of renovating it they just
02:19demolished it threw it in the rubbish and built a new one.
02:23It's hard to hard to understand how they're gonna make money from that but
02:26anyway there was that. More videos coming soon!
