00:00Okidoki, this one is kind of cute, this comes with a couture mold, there is like a remote
00:10control car in the front, this is for a sassy new mom, hopefully this gets easier.
00:19Fun fact, my mother told me that I absolutely needed to go bra shopping that second.
00:26I went and got sized, I went up two cup sizes in three months, like within the first
00:32three months of me being pregnant.
00:34So now I'm a C cup, and I might potentially need to move up to a D cup, and I have no
00:40idea how to feel about that, because I've never had boobs before, in my life.
00:46It's a whole new adventure for me.
00:53I think it's so interesting that it's women in particular that carry babies, because
00:57I feel like there's such a stigma with women in society and how we look and how we present
01:02ourselves and with weight and body image issues, outside of the fact that now you're creating
01:09a life, and how complicated of a relationship that can be.
01:12Right, yeah.
01:13We shouldn't be gaining weight, and now all of a sudden we're pregnant, we're gaining
01:17weight, maybe other people don't know that we're pregnant yet, so there's this internal
01:22struggle that a lot of people have, and unfortunately I think it can also bring back some triggers
01:28of perhaps some previous disordered eating behaviors, if people were struggling in the
01:33past with that as well.
01:35What's a way that you sort of help talk through some of your patients who are maybe experiencing
01:40not wanting to eat, or not wanting to gain weight, or feeling a way about gaining weight?
01:45In my practice I do cognitive behavioral therapy.
01:48I can go through so much when they're pregnant, because of all of these societal pressures,
01:54but then also what we're feeling and what we're going through as well.
01:57One of the best skills for that is self-talk, so I like to just remind people that they
02:03need to be gaining weight, but a healthy amount of weight, and that they are growing a baby
02:07inside of them, so we'll kind of examine the evidence of that, and that's kind of a skill
02:12that we do, and be like, okay, what's the facts right now?
02:14The fact is, you're pregnant, you need to be gaining weight, but then to remind yourself
02:18of that, and to use that self-talk whenever needed, so if somebody's thoughts are going
02:23in a place where like, I shouldn't be eating, or I don't want to gain weight, we can then
02:28say stop, take a breath, and then have that rational thought, the reminder of, oh right,
02:34I'm pregnant, I need to be gaining weight.
02:36Or, and I'm going to.
02:38Exactly, or I'm going to be gaining weight, and that's not a bad thing to a degree, of
02:43course, but that's healthy, and that means that I'm healthy.
02:46I know for me, one of the things that I kept looking for was like the moment when I would
02:52like achieve sort of this iconic pregnant woman look and feel.
02:59The perfect little bump, and it's all belly, and you know, I'm super stylish, and like
03:05I don't look tired at all, it's like what, can you talk a little bit about that image?
03:10You know, there is no perfect pregnancy, there's no perfect anything.
03:15We are all human, we're all individuals.
03:18You know, your perfect is going to happen, and that's when you feel, I think, healthy,
03:23and you're best while you're pregnant.
03:24You know, unfortunately, some people don't always feel great when they're pregnant, and
03:28maybe they won't, you know, feel that way, but everybody's unique in an individual,
03:34so I think if you can get that out of your head in the sense of, you know, I'm waiting
03:38for that perfect, it's really you finding it from within and being like, this is me.
03:44This is me pregnant.
03:45We are not going to look like anybody else that was pregnant, so compare a little less,
03:51or not to compare at all, ideally, and to remind ourselves that we are growing a human
03:57inside of us, which is an incredible thing, so to just be kind to yourself about that
04:02and remind yourself of that.
04:07Out of all of the changes that your body has gone through while being pregnant, what
04:11has been the most surprising?
04:13And the second time, you don't feel as, not horrible, but you don't feel as fat, because
04:25the first time, this is the first time seeing yourself in the mirror, and you're like, huge.
04:34You're huge, and I was like, above average huge, because my baby was big, my husband's
04:40super tall, I think I was six months pregnant, and everybody was like, oh, are you due soon?
04:46Like, is it happening this month?
04:48Or like, oh, do you have twins?
04:51Stuff like that.
04:52So it's like, my nipples have never been like, so huge, and it will probably never be the same.
05:01You don't think they'll like, go back down?
05:02I don't think so.
05:05And my boobs will just be kind of saggy.
05:08Yeah.
05:09Well, they're just going to be saggy, and my husband loves them no matter what, so it
05:16does not matter to me.
05:18But it's, you know, you really learn to just accept your body as it is, and then that actually
05:27builds your confidence at the same time, which is like, it's so weird, because you think
05:31you get pregnant, and you become this huge person, but for some reason, you are just
05:37more confident, because you just, you trust nature to do its thing, and you find that
05:45so much more beautiful than you've ever known.
06:00Yeah.
06:01Yeah.
06:02Yeah.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Yeah.
