00:00The 2024 Major League Baseball All-Star Game last night in Arlington, Texas.
00:09Hat Globely Field, the home of the Texas Rangers.
00:12The American League has been dominant in the Midsummer Classic the last decade plus.
00:18They had won nine straight, entering last year's All-Star Game in Seattle.
00:22The National League victorious by a single run, 3-2, but the AL back on top here in 2024.
00:29A 5-3 victory for the American League.
00:33Six of the eight total runs scored in the third.
00:36A three-run shot first from the NL off the bat of Shohei Otani.
00:40A mammoth home run of 400 feet.
00:43The American League responds in the bottom half of that frame to RBI double from Juan
00:49Soto.
00:50RBI single.
00:51A base knock out of Cleveland's catcher, that's David Frye, in the game-winning two-run home
00:55run from Jaron Duran.
00:57The youngster for the Boston Red Sox.
01:00It gives the AL the lead, 5-3 in the fifth, and that is all they needed.
01:04Duran takes home the All-Star Game MVP hardware as the AL wins once again as a slight minus
01:12118, Moneyline favorite, 5-3.
01:14Yeah, once again, the American League won.
01:16Let's take a look at the night as it went forward, because I'm one of those, like, I
01:19like big events, Ben, overall, and the All-Star Game is technically still a big event.
01:23Same thing in the NBA.
01:25I don't really dig into so much, let's just say, obviously, though, I couldn't stay in
01:27the Pro Bowl, and the NHL, I don't watch all that much from the All-Star Game perspective
01:31on, like, introductions, but I always like to tune in.
01:33It's fun to see all the superstars together in one place there, you know, to get the American
01:37League, the National League, to go over the reserves, then the starting lineup, which
01:40I think is pretty good.
01:41A much better rendition, Ben, yesterday of the Star-Spangled Banner to get everything
01:45underway for the All-Star Game, but as we watch it go through, like, I look at the opposite
01:49things that some people, hey, look, give me the game itself.
01:52You know what I didn't like so much?
01:53The uniforms, particularly the American League, I thought was terrible, but the color combination
01:57for the National League, Ben, absolutely sensational, and shout-out, because typically, this gets
02:02ruined.
02:03You know, in a year-to-year basis, oh, the draft hats are coming out for the NFL, and
02:06once out of every 10 years, you get a good draft hat.
02:08I thought the hats were sensational this year for the All-Star break.
02:12Number one, the individual teams that they wore, like, for their warm-ups and home-run
02:15derby, they were awesome.
02:17The National League and the American League hats yesterday, I thought they were fantastic,
02:20so a good start there stylistically.
02:22The only thing disappointing, obviously, was the American League's uniform.
02:25Now, to the game itself, 5-3 final, goes over the 7.5, finally, we got some runs, but also,
02:31did you notice during this game, which I do like in an All-Star setting, they mic'd some
02:35of the players up, and I thought it was really neat.
02:37They mic'd the three Philadelphia Phillies up on that line, on the infield.
02:40Quetel Marte was the only one with the Diamondbacks there, wasn't keyed up, but again, that was
02:44okay.
02:45Did you see when they actually had the All-Star pitcher, I think it was Tarek Skubal, was
02:49mic'd up, and they were asking him, like, questions in his wind-up, and he wasn't answering
02:53back.
02:54I'm like, you guys thought he would answer that?
02:55Like, hey, how do you feel out there when he's trying to get the signal?
02:57I thought that was interesting, where the actual pitcher was mic'd up, maybe a little
03:01bit too much, but the game itself, I did enjoy.
03:03I finally got to see some home-runs and some runs scored.
03:05The only thing that made me angry was, of course, it was going to be Juan Soto in a
03:082-2 count, working a walk below my plus-160 price on Paul Skeens to go 1-2-3 in the first
03:14inning, but I thought the overall, the All-Star game was enjoyable, and typically it is, because
03:18it's the closest form of the game you're going to get in the All-Star format.
03:21Right, Paul Skeens was electric from the start, but his first pitch, only 98 miles per hour
03:28to be 1-1 or higher, that was plus 400.
03:31You would have thought he came out absolutely gassed up.
03:34Juan Soto, yeah, maybe so.
03:36Juan Soto, the most patient hitter, maybe, in all of baseball, does draw that opening
03:41inning walk, so the 3-up, 3-down, that was also plus money for Paul Skeens, but ever
03:46so slightly so, not necessarily coming through last night.
03:50The other youngster for the American League, Mason Miller, for the Oakland Athletics, he
03:57got the win last night as he was in, when Jaron Duran hit that home run in the bottom
04:02of the fifth.
04:03Hunter Green for the Reds, suffers the loss, and Emmanuel Clauset, the closer for the Cleveland
04:08Guardians, he records the save last night, but we did see some star power, right?
04:14Joao Donny, a 3-run home run, Juan Soto contributing to the scoring in the home half of the third
04:19with that 2-RBI double as well, and Donny, for your American League team, if you are
04:25a Boston backer and Red Sox faithful, you've seen Jaron Duran perform in big spots this
04:31year for the Sox, he earned the All-Star Game MVP hardware because of the game-winning 2-run
04:37home run in the home half of the fifth, a plus-4,000 price, 40-1 to win the All-Star
04:45Game MVP award before the Midsummer Classic got underway.
04:49He goes home with that and a nice payday.
04:51Yeah, well-deserved, too, because that's when you take a look at the big performances of
04:55the night.
04:56In a tie game, you break that tie, and it was the winning run scored, of course, you're
04:59going to get that MVP, but also, Joao Donny with a home run and not winning the MVP, that's
05:03like the one spot where it's like, hey, you know what, we'll roll reverse, we'll just
05:06give it, because he had three RBI, and Duran only had two RBI, but I thought it was the
05:09right decision to make at that point, and also, shout-out to Mason Miller, the pitcher
05:13for the Oakland Athletics.
05:14I don't know how baseball gets away with this, where it's like, you know, the Phillies had
05:18seven or eight guys go, but each and every team treats their players and their All-Stars
05:22accordingly.
05:23Hey, you know what, after this game, we got a private jet waiting to take you to the All-Star
05:26Game, and I guess the Oakland Athletics bought Mason Miller, once again, which they do every
05:30year, a coach ticket to get down there from Philadelphia, and the Phillies are like, no,
05:34brother, get on this private jet with us, which is interesting, because he might be
05:37up at the trade deadline, you got eight guys on one side, him on the other side, hey, man,
05:41why don't you come to Philadelphia, we'll treat you in a little bit of respect, but
05:44the Oakland Athletics getting away with just sending their player, like coach and or commercial,
05:48always makes me laugh, I mean, that's ridiculous.
05:51The rookie All-Star, that's Mason Miller for the A's, the rookie All-Star starter for the
05:56National League, that was Paul Skeens, thankfully, Donny, I'm a little bit grateful, although
06:01it ruined your bet that one, Soto did draw that walk, so we could see Skeens versus Judge,
06:07because he only went that first full inning, Corbin Burns, of course, getting the start
06:12for the American League, 16 pitches for Skeens, no strikeouts for a guy that had 11 in his
06:18most recent start, it was a special Skeens day, technically Skeens day number 12 in the
06:24history of Major League Baseball, the first of what could be many appearances in an All-Star
06:29game for Skeens.
06:31And by the way, I had no idea Skeens went to the Air Force Academy, man, what a story,
06:35like I didn't know the background, I just thought he was always one of those big corn-fed
06:38dudes going down to LSU and dominating for years, dude steps in and goes to LSU, one
06:42year is the number one overall pick, that is a phenomenal story, this dude would be
06:46fight a jet fighter right now, instead, he's blowing smoke up there at the plate 100 plus
06:51miles an hour, that's a pretty good backstory on Skeens.
06:54Yeah, Paul Skeens started his collegiate baseball career, as Donny is referencing, at the Air
06:59Force Academy, wanted to be involved in the Air Force, was also an incredible hitter at
07:04the dish as well, but realized how electric his right arm was, makes the difficult decision
07:10to go to LSU, wins a natty with the Bayou Bengals, becomes the number one overall pick
07:15in 2023, and starts the All-Star game for the National League in his very first season.
07:21More reactions from last night's Midsummer Classic, the American League victorious once
07:26again, 5-3 victory for the AL, Jaron Duran, the youngster for the Boston Red Sox, two
07:32run home run, that was the game winner in the home half of the 5th, 5-3 the victory
07:37for the AL, they have won 10 of the last 11 All-Star games for just the 5th time in the
07:42last 18 Midsummer Classics, we go over a total, last night it was 7.5, for just the 4th time
07:50in the last 11 years, we see 8 or more runs in the All-Star game, bucking a couple of
07:56trends if you will, but the AL's dominance continues at the Midsummer Classic, DRS we
08:02have showed the stats, we have highlighted the performers last night, what they did at
08:06the dish, and on the bump, and of course the All-Star game MVP, Jaron Duran of the Boston
08:12Red Sox, any other takeaways, any other reactions that you have following last night in Arlington?
08:18Yeah let me ask you this question, because again I'm not up when these games finish at
08:21this point, and I understand, I saw like the highlight of obviously Duran being the MVP,
08:25they get that cool like glass bat, which I think is a pretty interesting trophy that
08:28they get out, but back in the day, like when the players, look they were still making a
08:32lot of money in the late 80s and early 90s, but they would like the All-Star game MVP
08:36would like win a new car, is there anything else they win besides like the bat, like did
08:40they get a million bucks, like a Corvette pop out on the field, because that used to
08:44always be the cool thing, like hey I won the award, then they drive it like a brand new
08:47truck, and you get to go sit and be like hey man this is great at this point, do we have
08:51any of that last night, like I don't know what, there's a glass bat they're showing
08:54right there, which I love, I think that's a cool award, I wonder if he got like a car
08:57along with it, or I don't know, at least a trip to Disneyland or something, yeah I'm
09:03pretty sure that you still win a Chevrolet vehicle, and you can choose which one, I think
09:10so, I don't know, we'll have our producer Joe Frizzo, Corvette is Chevy right, so would
09:15you just go the Corvette route, like at that point, you know, I don't know, would you go
09:19a truck, if you're more of a truck guy, I'm not a truck guy, but I wonder if that's what
09:24you decide to do, yeah, I don't know, I don't see Jaron Duran getting into a truck though
09:30by any means, yeah, just get to pick it out, that's pretty impressive, yeah, how do you
09:38top that, hey by the way, would you, I only made one All-Star game in my career, well
09:41would you, were you a benchwarmer, yeah I was, but I came in and jacked a two run bomb
09:45to give us the win, took home the award, like that's pretty neat man, you're gonna, same
09:48thing with a Casper Hernandez, winning the home run derby, that's something cool, you
09:51can always tell the people down the line, getting that big like invite to the All-Star
09:55game is one thing, but performing on the biggest stage when you're not supposed to, and also,
09:59hey by the way, I was MVP in a game where Shoya Ohtani hit a three run home run, how
10:02about that, that's pretty cool too, it was also a very cool moment, you could tell from
10:07Jaron Duran's post-game interview after winning the MVP hardware, that it really did mean
10:12something of significance to him, there might be players in, regardless of sport, that say
10:17awesome man, I appreciate the hardware, what a fun time we had, but you could tell it was
10:22meaningful, Jaron Duran back on Sunday Night Baseball, July 7th when they were taking on
10:26the Yankees, he was mic'd up, he was having a conversation throughout the broadcast, and
10:31he mentioned after being named an All-Star player for the American League, he called
10:35his father, he said they both immediately broke down crying in tears because of the
10:40magnitude of that moment, and what it meant to be an All-Star in Major League Baseball,
10:46the 27-year-old for the Sox, his first All-Star game appearance, and an All-Star game MVP
10:51award, deservingly so, the game winning two run home run, 413 feet, last night in
10:58Arlington, to give the American League its 10th victory in the last 11 years. Donnie, we
11:04have all questioned, I think in the last few years, around whatever sport it has been,
11:09despite changes to format and things that have been made, if All-Star games still have
11:15the juice, I still enjoy the Major League Baseball All-Star game more than most, because
11:20it feels the closest thing we'll get to an actual game, and they add some elements, like
11:25talking to Tarek Skubal, who might win the American League Cy Young Award, as he is
11:29literally throwing a pitch, or what he is seeing when Adley Rutschman is giving him
11:33signs behind the dish, I do enjoy that. From what you saw last night, do you still agree
11:38with the idea, like in our Fade to Public poll yesterday, the All-Star game still has
11:42its significance?
11:44It does. Well, it's two different things. Is it watchable, or is it significance? I don't
11:48think it has much significance anymore, because it's just an exhibition, when again, the
11:52exhibition used to be like, let's go to different cities every year, because these
11:55players and teams don't play in these stadiums, and these fans don't see these
11:58players. That's out the door. But I think the significance of the All-Star game is, you
12:02can still tune in, like, oh, yeah, this is baseball. Like, they're not just messing
12:05around, like, you know, like, let's just say, if you take it for a NHL All-Star game, or
12:09an NBA All-Star game, hey, you know what, I'm gonna walk Elie Delacruz on purpose, so
12:14we can watch him steal in the next play and see if my catcher can throw him out. That's
12:17what All-Star games are typically about, but not the Major League Baseball All-Star
12:20game. At least it's the best semblance of an overall game that you can get. And the
12:24superstars do perform, they take it seriously in Major League Baseball. So there's
12:27still something to be said about the Major League Baseball game continuing, even
12:30though the relevance, not really there anymore.
12:33Our producer Joe Frizzo, in a Lone Star State feeling, shared that Jared Noran got
12:39some cowboy boots and a huge belt buckle last night.
