Hello Dolly – Bill Coleman 1972.

It is just too bad that there are so very few recordings of Bill Coleman. Almost every musician tries to play Hello Dolly like Louis Armstrong. Not that there was anything wrong with, but it is so nice to see and hear another musician play it his way. Bill swings this tune in a great tempo and even throws in a vocal.
Bill Coleman was one of my favourite swing trumpet players (1904-1981). I compare him in line with Buck Clayton, Frankie Newton and Red Allen. Unfortunately there are not many films of him.
He lived for a large part of his life in France and missed some of the international glory the others had. In a French TV program called Jazz Harmonie Bill plays trumpet. Marc Hemmeler piano, Jimmy Gourley guitar, Pierre Sim bass and Michel Silva drums.
