00:00Before we begin, may I join the Leader of the Opposition in his tribute to His Majesty
00:10the King? It is so heartening to see him in his rightful place delivering the gracious
00:15speech and I am sure the whole House will not mind once again wishing him a speedy recovery.
00:23May I also join in wishing Her Majesty the Queen a happy birthday?
00:30We also wish President Trump a speedy recovery from the appalling attempt on his life at
00:36the weekend. I spoke with President Trump on Sunday night to pass our best wishes, but
00:43also to share our revulsion at the senseless violence which has no place in democracy.
00:52Last time this address took place and I stood at that dispatch box, I could see for the
00:59first time the then new plaque now behind me commemorating the memory of Sir David Amess.
01:08I know how hard that loss was for Members on the opposite benches. Now, standing on
01:16this side, I can see for the first time in front of me the plaque to our dear friend
01:23Jo Cox, with her words that catch the air of this Chamber even more at a moment like
01:30this, more in common. So while our thoughts at this time are of course with President
01:37Trump and the American people, we cannot think that this is something that only happens elsewhere.
01:45We must heed the words of President Biden to lower the temperature of our democracy,
01:51work across our disagreements and find each other's common decency.
