00:00I'm glad we got an early start this morning.
00:05There aren't many cars out on the street yet at all.
00:08That's why I wanted to start this early.
00:10Cal.
00:12Huh?
00:13I sure want to thank you for asking me along on this trip.
00:16Don't mention it.
00:18You ought to thank Henry.
00:19Too bad he had to stay, but Bill needed his help.
00:22I did thank him, until he was almost tired of hearing me say it.
00:27Just think.
00:28A sheriff's convention, and I'm going to it.
00:32Don't get too carried away, Jojo.
00:34You might be a little disappointed.
00:36The meetings might get pretty boring to you after a while.
00:39Oh, I doubt that.
00:41But even if they do, I'll have Central City to look at, since I've never been there before.
00:45Yep, there'll be enough there to keep you busy, all right.
00:47Oops, red light.
00:50Well, I'm glad to see that you obey traffic laws too, Sheriff.
00:56There's a little temptation to forget about them at this time of the morning.
00:59Not another car in sight.
01:01Yeah, looks like Olive Naughty Pine is asleep.
01:04I think you spoke a little too soon on that one, Jojo.
01:07Look over there.
01:08Huh?
01:09Oh, a man.
01:11Who would be out at this time of morning?
01:13Look a little closer.
01:15Oh, it's Dr. Springer.
01:18I guess doctors never sleep.
01:20Hey, he's coming this way.
01:22Good morning, Doc.
01:23Well, this is a rare pleasure indeed,
01:26seeing wide-awake human beings at this time of morning.
01:30Well, we really aren't very much awake.
01:32We're kind of surprised to see you too.
01:35Out taking care of trouble this morning?
01:37No, purely pleasure.
01:39How about you?
01:40Eh, wish I could say the same.
01:43Mrs. Krause decided she could do without her appendix last night,
01:47so I had to help her out.
01:50Oh, help her out or get out?
01:55All the way, look at it.
01:57Where are you fellas heading?
01:59Fishing?
02:00Well, not exactly.
02:01They're having the annual Sheriff's Convention in Central City this week,
02:04and we're going up there to it.
02:06Oh.
02:07What are you going along for, Jojo?
02:10An example of a juvenile delinquent?
02:14No, he's mainly going along for the ride.
02:17And to see what I can learn.
02:19Well, have a nice time, you two.
02:22You've got a long drive ahead of you,
02:24and well, I can still catch a few more hours sleep.
02:29Can we drop you somewhere, Doc?
02:30Thanks a lot, but no.
02:33I'm parked right over here.
02:35Have a good time.
02:37Well, we'll see you, Doc.
02:38Come on, Doc.
02:44Nice fellow, Doc Springer.
02:48Uh, Cal.
02:50Huh?
02:51I don't know how to break this to you,
02:53you being the Sheriff of Naughty Pine and all, but...
02:56Why, what's on your mind?
02:59Well, you started up and went right through that red light back there.
03:08The End
03:19Oh, boy.
03:23All this beautiful scenery,
03:25and the soothing vibration of the car...
03:28The early hour.
03:29And the early hour.
03:31It's all making me so sleepy.
03:33Well, feel free to take a nap.
03:35It's a long trip.
03:37Oh, sure.
03:38That'd be real nice for you.
03:40You're probably as sleepy as I am.
03:42Oh, here comes something that should keep you awake for at least another minute.
03:46Oh, sure.
03:48What's that?
03:49You see these signs we're coming to?
03:51Oh, yeah.
03:53They're usually pretty good.
03:54Let's see.
03:56The story reads like an open book.
04:01Caveman loses caveman look.
04:04Hey, that's neat.
04:06You shave yet, Jojo?
04:08Once in a while.
04:09But you don't look much like a caveman when you don't, huh?
04:12No, not much.
04:13Well, when you start to think about it, I guess none of us do.
04:16Oh, I don't know.
04:17Did you ever watch the football coach at school?
04:20I don't know if I ever think that's funny, but...
04:23Bruce Watson's a nice fellow.
04:25So were a lot of cavemen, I suppose.
04:27Maybe you're right.
04:33Oh, boy.
04:34What's the trouble?
04:35I was just thinking.
04:37Those cavemen must have had a pretty rough time.
04:40How do you mean that?
04:42Well, you know, they didn't have anything like we do today, and they lived in awful circumstances.
04:48Oh, maybe you're looking at it the wrong way, Jojo.
04:51What do you mean?
04:52Well, the way I figure, they had the same problems we do.
04:55Well, maybe, but what about sickness and those big prehistoric animals?
05:01Well, the men may have lasted, but lots of them were killed by these things.
05:05Of course, you don't read of any cavemen being killed in auto accidents
05:08or being hurt falling down stairs today, do you?
05:11No, no, I'm afraid not too many.
05:14Well, I see what you mean, though.
05:15I guess every age has its monsters and killers, even if they aren't the same ones.
05:20That's right.
05:21When we can't find enough other things to cut down the size of the population, we start wars.
05:27Yeah, that's more like cavemen than anything.
05:30Hang on, sharp curve coming up.
05:32Well, we must be getting into the mountains, but good, huh?
05:35Yeah, it won't be long before we'll...
05:36Hey, look in the road. That tree has fallen.
05:38No time to stop. Hang on, I'll try to go around it.
05:40No, there's no room. Cal, we're going over.
06:00Oh, Cal, Cal.
06:14Oh, Jojo, are you all right?
06:20I think so.
06:23That's what I was going to ask you.
06:25Have I been out long?
06:27I don't know, but I don't think so.
06:30I think we just landed.
06:31We'd better get out of this mess if we can.
06:34I think I'm free.
06:37Let's try it.
06:38Yeah.
06:40Oh, man.
06:44Look out.
06:45Keep out of the way of that falling blast.
06:47Sharp.
06:49Got enough scratches, I'll get some more.
06:51There.
06:53Oh, I'm out.
06:56What's the matter?
06:57Oh, my arm. Boy, does it hurt.
07:00Here, let's take a look at it once.
07:03Uh-huh. Take it easy.
07:05It might be broken.
07:07You okay otherwise?
07:09As far as I know. How about you?
07:12I guess I got a couple of cuts here and there,
07:14but nothing worked with making much of a fuss over.
07:19Boy, it's almost a miracle.
07:21Sure seems like it, judging how far we fell from up there.
07:25I can't even see the top of the hill from here.
07:29We must have come a long way.
07:31Sure didn't seem that far.
07:33I didn't think so either.
07:35Well, I guess we'd better start climbing out of this valley or pass
07:38or whatever it is we fell into.
07:40It sure is a strange-looking place.
07:42Tuck your arm inside your shirt like a sling and don't try to use it.
07:46Here, let me help you a little bit.
07:51What does that hurt?
07:53There.
07:55Oh, that is better.
07:58Cal, how do you figure we're going to get up out of here?
08:01Well, figuring by where the car landed, we ought to be near the highway.
08:05You think so?
08:06Yeah, I guess you're right.
08:08So we should climb as straight up from here as we can
08:11and then hope another car comes along.
08:14Yeah, if another car doesn't see that tree up there,
08:16we might just as well wait here for them.
08:19I should have been watching closer.
08:21It wasn't your fault, Cal.
08:23That sharp turn completely hid the tree.
08:26Yes, but all the same, I should have...
08:28Maybe when we get up there we can move the tree out of the way or something
08:32or at least set up some kind of warning.
08:34That's a good idea.
08:35I guess we'd better get started.
08:37Right.
08:39Say, isn't there a radio in the car?
08:42Maybe we could call for help.
08:44Oh, look at that heap of metal.
08:46The radio's worthless now.
08:49Well, let's get moving.
08:52Wait a minute.
08:54What's the matter?
08:55No telling what we'll meet on our hike.
08:57This looks like a good bear country.
09:00Do you have a gun or something?
09:02If I can find it in all this wreckage.
09:04There's a gun and a couple of boxes of shells in here.
09:13Cal?
09:14Yeah, just a second, Jojo. I'll be right with you.
09:17Ah, here it is. All intact.
09:24Now what was it you wanted?
09:26Look around here a minute.
09:28Uh-huh.
09:30So?
09:32Doesn't this valley look somehow strange?
09:35Of course it does.
09:36This is a good ways farther than Bill's district.
09:39You've never been this far north before.
09:41That's not what I mean, Cal.
09:43Look, for instance, at the trees and plants.
09:45Don't they look, well, bigger or something?
09:48Hmm. Now that you mention it, Jojo, they do.
09:52This must be good fertile land.
09:54Yeah, it all just seems so strange, that's all.
09:58The only thing that seems strange to me is why we aren't moving up the side of this hill toward the highway.
10:03Sure. Let's go.
10:05You found the gun all right?
10:07Yep, I got it right here.
10:10What's so funny?
10:12I was just thinking.
10:14Every word talking about the hard life that the cavemen had,
10:17and the next minute we were having about the same sort of time ourselves.
10:20Yeah.
10:22Except, um, we have it a little better than they did.
10:25Oh?
10:26Sure. We've got that gun.
10:40The End
10:48What do you make of this?
10:50I don't know, Cal.
10:52Well, it looks like an area of about 20 feet along the side of this slope has been torn off.
10:57All that's left is a few roots and a lot of loose dirt.
11:01Well, the angle seems too steep to climb it.
11:04It looks as though it runs around the whole valley.
11:07Cal, do you suppose it's a road?
11:09I couldn't drive anything on a sideways angle like this.
11:13It looks like the ring some folks leave in a bathtub.
11:16What could have made it?
11:18You couldn't run a big moor along here. It's too steep.
11:22Besides, it looks like things have been pulled out rather than cut down.
11:26That's strange, all right.
11:29It runs as far as I can see.
11:33What do you think we ought to do, Cal?
11:35Well, if we had some rope and you didn't have that busted arm, the answer would be simple.
11:39But I guess we'll just have to walk along this dirt strip until the angle gets better and we can cross it.
11:45Or it stops.
11:47Yeah. I can see sort of an opening in the valley about a mile, I guess, in that direction.
11:54Maybe we'd better head for it.
11:56That's a good idea.
11:57Once we get above this ripped out patch, we can come back this way along the top and still find the highway.
12:03Let's go.
12:05
12:21Cal! What's that?
12:23I don't know. Some animal.
12:26I never heard an animal that sounded like that before.
12:28Well, neither did I. That doesn't mean there isn't one, does it?
12:32I guess not.
12:33Now settle down. I've got this gun and everything.
12:37There it is again.
12:38Yeah. I'd better check to be sure this gun is loaded.
12:43Cal.
12:44Huh?
12:46Well, I've been trying not to think what I've been thinking for the last few minutes.
12:52That doesn't make a lot of sense, Jojo. What are you trying to say?
12:56Well, Cal, take a look here at the ridge where all the trees and bushes and stuff have been pulled out.
13:01I've been looking at it. That's why we can't climb any higher up.
13:05Nothing to grab onto up there.
13:07Yeah, I know that, but look at how the trees have been pulled out.
13:11What are you getting at?
13:13Oh, here, for instance. See in this hole? Big roots, like there must have been a pretty big tree here.
13:19Looks just like all the other holes we've seen.
13:22Yeah, right. But look around the edges of the hole.
13:25Don't these look like big, well, teeth marks?
13:29Hey, hold on, boy. Don't go getting hysterical on me.
13:33I mean it. Look at them, Cal.
13:35Well, they could resemble teeth marks, but I wouldn't come right out and say that they are.
13:39Why not?
13:40Oh, lots of reasons. Never saw anything with a mouth so big it could bite off a tree.
13:44Yeah, that's what I was wondering.
13:46Besides, what would eat off just a ridge along the side of a valley like this?
13:51Well, now, just supposing that this pass...
13:54Some path.
13:55Well, okay, this wide strip of eaten off area was eaten by something like a prehistoric animal.
14:03Now, now, whoa there, Jojo. Don't go getting any wise ideas.
14:06No, no, wait a minute. Let's just suppose that it was.
14:10Now, if his mouth was so big that it could bite off a tree, wouldn't his body have to be pretty big, too?
14:17Bigger than anything I've ever seen.
14:19Right.
14:20Now, if he stood up, isn't it possible that his head would be about as high as this eaten off strip is from the floor of the valley?
14:30That makes too good sense, Jojo.
14:32Yeah, I know.
14:34But we are living in prehistoric time.
14:36There aren't any of those big monsters left.
14:38They all died.
14:40It's impossible that there should be any...
14:49We just don't know what to make of it.
14:51But I know one thing.
14:52What's that?
14:53If we don't find a way out of this place soon, and if that thing, whatever it is, doesn't stop making all that noise,
14:59I'm gonna be scared enough to jump over this loose dirt, and for that matter, all the way out of this valley.
15:19Hey, listen.
15:21Hmm?
15:23I don't hear anything.
15:25Yeah, that's exactly it.
15:27The birds, they've stopped.
15:29Say, that is funny.
15:32The only time I know of when birds stop chirping is when they're frightened to death.
15:36Well, if that sound we heard a while ago didn't scare them, I don't know what would.
15:40Yeah, but they didn't stop then.
15:42I guess whatever made that sound wasn't close enough to them to do any harm.
15:46It sounded close enough, though.
15:49Yeah, but a valley like this can really make the sound fool you.
15:53Hmm?
15:54What's the matter?
15:55I just thought of something.
15:57What?
15:59If they've stopped chirping now, that means that there is something close enough to do them harm.
16:04And if them, us too.
16:05Yeah, that's what I mean.
16:07Let's hurry, little Jojo.
16:08We're almost out of this valley.
16:10All we have to do is make it around that next turn, and we should be able to find a place to climb up higher.
16:14As far as I'm concerned, the sooner the better.
16:17I don't know where that thing is or for that matter what it is, but I think I'll be just as happy not to meet it.
16:23Cal!
16:25I see it.
16:27I just don't believe it.
16:30Do you think it's seen us?
16:32I can't tell for sure.
16:34It might have been just waiting around this corner for us and waiting until we get there so it can catch us.
16:38Wow.
16:40Just look at the size of that thing.
16:42Yeah, it's just like you figured before.
16:45It must be a hundred feet long if he's an inch for sure.
16:48Goodness sake.
16:50Yeah, his eye is as big as a road mover's wheel.
16:54Cal, he's looking this way.
16:56Yeah, hurry up, get down, quick.
17:13Phew.
17:15He's biased.
17:17I think he's missed seeing us too.
17:19C-C-Cal, what is it?
17:22I've never seen anything like that in my whole life.
17:25Except in books.
17:27You know, he looks just like one of those prehistoric animals.
17:30Yeah, but here?
17:32Now?
17:34I thought things like that were...
17:35Yeah, I thought the same thing, Jojo.
17:38There he is.
17:39We both have seen him.
17:41Huh.
17:42What?
17:43A lot of good this gun will do.
17:46If I shot him, he'd probably think he was mosquito bit or something like that.
17:50Yeah, he must have been the one that ate this strip around the valley.
17:54That's a pretty good trick if you ask me.
17:57Good thinking.
17:58What do you mean?
17:59Clear a twenty or thirty foot path of loose dirt around the wall of the valley
18:05so as anything that dropped in here couldn't get out.
18:08Maybe that's why he isn't bothering chasing us.
18:11He knows we can't get out of here anyhow.
18:14Jojo, we're trapped.
18:38I don't hear him anymore.
18:40Uh-uh.
18:41You know, I don't hear the birds either.
18:43That's true.
18:44It's bad, too.
18:46Yeah, it looks like night is coming on, too.
18:48Yeah, my stomach told me we'd been here for a while.
18:51I'm hungry, too, but remember, imagine how hungry he must get.
18:55Well, I don't hanker to serve as a hot dog for him or any such thing.
18:59I'm going to look and see if he's still there.
19:09He's still there.
19:11Did he see him?
19:12I can't say for sure, but he sure yelled at the right time.
19:18What's that?
19:19A cat.
19:20Look, look, up there, flying above us.
19:23Another one.
19:24Looks like a big bird.
19:26Yeah, look at those jaws.
19:28I see something else, too, Jojo.
19:30What?
19:31There is any question about whether or not he's seen us.
19:33Here he comes.
19:38Ah!
19:39Ah!
19:40Ah!
19:41Ah!
19:42Ah!
19:43Ah!
19:44Ah!
19:45Ah!
19:46Ah!
19:47Ah!
19:48Ah!
19:49Ah!
19:50Ah!
19:51Ah!
19:52Ah!
19:53Ah!
19:54Ah!
19:55Ah!
19:56Ah!
19:57Ah!
19:58Ah!
19:59Ah!
20:00Ah!
20:01Ah!
20:02Ah!
20:03Ah!
20:04Ah!
20:05Ah!
20:06Ah!
20:08Wow!
20:10Wow is right.
20:12Why, did you see that?
20:14That big fella picked that flying monster right out of the air.
20:18He sure wasn't long in breaking him in half, either.
20:20Yeah, and with his jaws.
20:22Whew!
20:23I feel weak all over.
20:25I know what you mean.
20:27Yeah, and it all happened so close.
20:29That flying thing would have had us if it weren't for that other monster.
20:33I know.
20:34He sure saved us.
20:35Maybe he saved us just for dessert.
20:37Maybe.
20:39One good thing, though.
20:40What's that?
20:41He won't be as hungry now.
20:43Maybe he'll even go to sleep.
20:45That's a possibility, but...
20:47Then, you know what?
20:49Maybe we could sneak by him.
20:51Could be.
20:53Only...
20:54Only what?
20:55We don't know how many more of those other fellows there are around the corner.
21:05Shh.
21:25Boy, I hope he doesn't wake up.
21:29Oh!
21:30Quiet, Jojo.
21:32This is our only chance.
21:53There.
21:54We're past him.
21:56But keep quiet till we get a good distance away.
21:59Did you see that mouth?
22:01I sure did.
22:03That's why I say keep quiet.
22:05What, why?
22:06It must have been 10 or 15 feet long.
22:09I figure he could hold both of us on his tongue and still have room for a small tree.
22:16Shh.
22:17If he wakes now and sees us, we've had it.
22:21I just can't figure it out, Cal.
22:24How could there be monsters like this?
22:26I don't know.
22:27I just don't understand.
22:28The time for meditating on that problem is later.
22:31Right now we've got to get him.
22:33He's awake!
22:34He's looking around that corner to where we were.
22:36He's looking for us.
22:37Quick, we've got to hide.
22:39No place here to hide.
22:40Run for it, Jojo.
22:43Uh-oh, Cal, he spotted us.
22:44Run, Jojo.
22:45It'll be all right.
22:49I am running.
22:51We can't outrun that thing.
22:52Keep running, Jojo.
22:53Everything will be all right.
22:56What are you talking about?
22:58He's almost got us.
22:59Everything is all right, Jojo.
23:18He's running faster.
23:21He's almost got us.
23:22Everything is all right, Jojo.
23:24Take it easy, boy.
23:25Oh, Cal, we're finished.
23:28He's got us.
23:29Jojo, it's all right.
23:30Steady, boy.
23:31Huh?
23:32Huh?
23:33Huh?
23:34What?
23:35Cal?
23:36I think he's coming out of it.
23:39He must have been having a dream or something.
23:41Probably due to shock.
23:45Jojo?
23:46Huh?
23:47Oh, Dr. Springer.
23:50What are you doing here?
23:52Take it easy, Jojo.
23:54Where am I?
23:56Oh, did he get us?
23:59I don't know what you were dreaming, Jojo, but everything's okay now.
24:04Dream?
24:06You mean it was a dream?
24:09Oh, my arm.
24:12Looks like you broke it in the accident, Jojo.
24:15That's all.
24:17You were both pretty fortunate.
24:20Yeah, but Doc, it was broken in the dream, too.
24:25That must have been some dream.
24:28Oh, I'll say.
24:30It was so strange.
24:32All about prehistoric monsters and birds.
24:36Must have been the cavemen.
24:38What's that?
24:39Just before the accident, we were talking about cavemen while we were riding in the car.
24:44Must have played on Jojo's mind.
24:46Oh, that's possible.
24:49You all right now, Jojo?
24:52Oh, I guess so. A little weak.
24:55How did I get here?
24:56Well, after that tree stopped us.
24:58What tree?
24:59That must be where you left us.
25:02I guess so.
25:03Anyhow, when we hit that tree, we both fell against the front of the dashboard.
25:07I went out, too.
25:09When I woke up, I used the radio and called for an ambulance.
25:12And they brought you right back here.
25:15So, I guess you didn't get much sleep after all, eh, Doc?
25:20Oh, that's all right, Jojo.
25:23As long as you two pulled through, okay.
25:26You know, if my dream had come true, we probably never would have been heard from again.
25:33Huh. Funny, though.
25:36What's that?
25:37It all seemed so real.
25:40Yet I kept wondering how it could really be happening.
25:44Well, dreams are like that sometimes.
25:49Oh, say, I almost forgot.
25:52Bill stopped by a while ago to see how you were, and he said he'd be back as soon as he could.
25:59But he left this for you.
26:03Said you might be interested in it.
26:05Oh, what is it?
26:07Looks like a book.
26:09He thought it might take your mind off having to lie here in the hospital and hear him.
26:25Hey, what's so funny, Jojo?
26:30Look at the title of this book.
26:34Oh, no.
26:39I guess I'd better take a look, too.
26:42What is it?
26:43Here, Doc.
26:45Pretty good.
26:46Monsters of the Past.
26:49A study of the prehistoric beasts that once prowled the earth.
26:56Did you ever have a bad dream, boys and girls?
27:00Maybe you were as happy as I was to wake up.
27:04Well, we'll see you next week for more awake adventures with...
27:08Ranger Bill!
27:25Ranger Bill was produced in the radio studios of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.
