00:00His best two laps were better than anyone else's.
00:03One lap and that's two races in a row.
00:05He's been fast qualifier.
00:06Yeah, Tom's been riding really good all year long and the speed has been picking up, so
00:10he's got the pace.
00:11Well, he must have followed the KTM keys to the moto, then, James.
00:12What do you need to do?
00:13It's important for these guys, as J.T.
00:14Mentioned and we saw in the 450 class, the momentum coming out and through these sections.
00:15And this 250 class, the exits of the corners.
00:16And what I mean by that, the exits going up to the corners.
00:17It's important for these guys, as J.T.
00:18Mentioned and we saw in the 450 class, the momentum coming out and through these sections.
00:19And this 250 class, the exits of the corners.
00:20And what I mean by that, the exits going up to the corners.
00:27And what I mean by that, the exits going up to the corners.
00:34We saw what happened with Hunter Lawrence, the exit of the corner wasn't good.
00:37He got passed by chase Sexton.
00:38This 250, they're going to have to get these things right to get up these hills and through
00:43those rollers.
00:44So here we are, 40 riders, 30 minutes and two laps, the race duration.
00:50Shout out to the Frenchman, Tom Guillaume.
00:51He's headed back home.
00:52But he did collect the FMF privateer power award last week, battling through traffic,
00:57getting some points in the top 20.
00:59Now the fly racing 32nd card is up.
01:02Momentum on the line.
01:04The first off weekend for Deegan due to a variety of reasons.
01:08Last week at red bug, was it a one-off?
01:10Or was it master pool and Shimoda?
01:13Can they get a hook in him?
01:16About to find out.
01:22Here we go.
01:35Is that Deegan?
01:36He's on the inside.
01:38Looking to clear out.
01:40I think it's Cochran right with him.
01:43Yes, Deegan and Cochran.
01:45Rivals in their amateur days.
01:47Two of the young riders up front and two Kawasaki.
01:50What a way to bounce back and show everybody you back by getting out front.
01:54It's the perfect place.
01:55Let's see if he can get a little gap on these guys.
01:58Looks like chance.
01:59Maybe that's his teammate Joe Shimoda.
02:01Hey, Deegan, at the last weekend, this is exactly where you need to be at.
02:05Fifth pole shot this year for Deegan of the monster.
02:09Yamaha star racing ride.
02:11Kitchen battling Cochran and now Shimoda.
02:14Levi was able to get around Kasey.
02:16Now it looks like Joe Shimoda, I believe, went down in practice earlier today.
02:21Hurt his shoulder.
02:22Nice to see him up front.
02:24Hopefully that shoulder doesn't bother him.
02:26Look at this lead already.
02:28I don't think he liked the talk of the off weekend we were bringing up after last weekend.
02:33Hayden is putting in some sprints right now in this first opening lap.
02:37This guy is all about the bulletin board material.
02:40It doesn't take much to fuel that fire.
02:43He is definitely fired up now.
02:45The great part about the track soul here at millville is you don't have to worry about
02:50the water or the thing being too slippery.
02:52Hayden is able to get out here.
02:54He feels comfortable.
02:55He can just let it hang out because of the traction his track has.
02:58Will?
02:59That's right.
03:00I said before there, James, that the team, Hayden's crew, they were not worried about
03:04last weekend.
03:05Like you said, there was a myriad of reasons why they said he was in that situation.
03:10He told me on top of that, if that's my off weekend and I crash, I saw the bike, I'm not
03:15feeling very well.
03:16If that's the off weekend, not a problem.
03:18I will take it.
03:19An interesting take from his dad.
03:21He said, look, we're in a balance here as to what we do with this 18-year-old kid is
03:26how he described his son.
03:28We thought maybe a little bit of a break last week.
03:31It was the 4th of July.
03:33He thought maybe that would refresh him.
03:35Now we've learned that actually taking him out of his routine and doing that perhaps
03:39wasn't the best idea.
03:41He said maybe that resulted in just feeling a tick off.
03:44That's what we saw him there last weekend.
03:46Clearly right now it doesn't seem to be affecting him.
03:49Dad also said 450 is going first.
03:52James' track is rough.
03:54That plays the Hayden vegan JT.
03:56For these riders, confidence is such a fickle thing.
04:01I think for riders like Ty Masterpool, they were starting to gain a little bit of confidence
04:06and starting to believe that they could beat Hayden vegan on a week-in and week-out basis.
04:10For Hayden, I don't think he ever doubted himself.
04:13He needed to go back and send a message to everyone, including both of them, that, hey,
04:17I'm still the same guy I was.
04:19There's a reason I have a 40-point lead.
04:21I think that's what he came here and set out to do.
04:24On that being said, Hayden's got to be careful because you can't really ride this racetrack.
04:28I know he wants to go out and send a message if that's what he's trying to do.
04:32It looks like that, but you see he's starting to make a few mistakes.
04:35Levi was able to close in.
04:37As much as he wants to send a message, the message has been sent with that 42-point lead he has.
04:42He needs to remember that and not take a big chance and go down.
04:45Why is this a track?
04:47The dirt looks so great.
04:49It looks like you could just rip it.
04:51Why does he have to be careful and not overdo it?
04:53Because we saw what happened, as I was saying, in the keys, the exits of the corners.
04:58If he's going in hot because he wants to power and slam into stuff, he's going to lose time.
05:04It seemed like in that latter part of that first lap, he was doing that.
05:08You saw how much time Levi was able to close.
05:10Hayden wants to send a message.
05:12When you're a young kid like that, sometimes you get a little out of control and you start slamming into these corners.
05:17Allow these guys to close in.
05:19Again, he's got a 42-point lead, Jason.
05:22He's done all the hard work.
05:23Don't lose it now because of something that happened last week.
05:25Watching Vial in third of the Red Bull KTM.
05:31Always has Marvin Muskan, one of the great riders of the past.
05:34Frenchman.
05:35But also now David Milliman joining him this weekend.
05:38Wow, we got a battle.
05:39It is Hymus on the right side looking to make a move on Cochran.
05:42Chance with the scrub.
05:44Now he's got the outside.
05:45He's going to flow around.
05:46Kasey lets him go by.
05:48This is where you're going to see how much improvement and confidence Hymus has grown over the last few weeks.
05:53Is he somehow able to close in and maybe get up on the podium?
05:56Shows me that this kid really believes that he belongs up front.
05:59He looks really aggressive now.
06:01And being from Oklahoma, or at least practicing it out there, I think he probably feels pretty comfortable on these soil and these kind of conditions.
06:07He looks pretty good.
06:09See if he can get around his teammates and keep going forward.
06:11So it's the Honda teammate, Shimoda.
06:13And now Hymus, fourth and fifth.
06:15Cochran, sixth.
06:16Then Masterpool got shuffled back.
06:18Had a good start.
06:20Savacci and then Julian Bumair making his return to racing after a concussion a couple weeks ago at ninth.
06:26Anstey is tenth.
06:28Down to Will with more of the 30.
06:30That's right.
06:31For Joe Shimoda, Jason, and James, a bit of a rough start to the day.
06:36What you're about to see here was early on in qualifying.
06:39We did not catch the crash.
06:41But I was told that as he landed on the ground, he basically extended his right shoulder back enough that he was in a decent amount of pain.
06:49They did get it checked out there.
06:51They put it down as a strain.
06:53But he is taped up, so he did have to have some work done on him today.
06:56Apparently he's in pain, but it's not an extreme amount of pain.
06:59And they said they feel that he should be able to ride through it.
07:02But I just want to give you a little update there on Joe.
07:04Thanks, Will.
07:05And he already was in some pain.
07:07Spent two weeks in Michigan with his riding coach Nick Way.
07:10He was originally from there.
07:12And he told me, I rented an Airbnb, and all I did was cycle, gym, and ride.
07:17I had nothing else to do.
07:18And just worked on technique stuff, not even full motos.
07:21So he has been in the grind.
07:23He said it was nothing but motocross, sunup to sundown the last two weeks.
07:27Yeah, and you would think for a guy that has a shoulder, the hardest part would be the sand rollers.
07:32But it's not.
07:33It's actually going down these hills where he's in the most pain.
07:35Going down those hills and then going up.
07:37Because he's got to be leaned back.
07:39That shoulder's all stretched out.
07:41And if it's more about something of flexibility, then it's going to be tough for him.
07:45Oh, here's the Michigan motos.
07:47Look how gnarly this track is.
07:49That little willy right there was pretty gnarly.
07:52J.T., what do you see there?
07:54Well, much like Joe Shimoda, I actually spent time living with Nick Way
07:57and riding that very track that we have on video there.
08:00So I know what Joe Shimoda's going through.
08:02And it is complete and utter focus on racing and the craft of it, training, riding.
08:07Because there's nothing else to do.
08:09Joe doesn't have friends in Michigan, really doesn't know where to go or else do.
08:12So you're completely locked in.
08:14And another thing that I really benefited from in Michigan, the temperatures are a little cooler.
08:18And you think about Joe Shimoda, he's been in Southern California where it's over 100 degrees every day.
08:22In Michigan, it's a little bit cooler, so you can spend more time riding.
08:25You can spend more time working on your technique and your craft
08:28because your number one thought is not getting out of the heat every single day.
08:31So I think he's gaining a little bit of that.
08:33He's gaining confidence along the way as well.
08:35Yeah, I agree.
08:36And I think by riding on the east coast of Michigan,
08:39it's going to make Joe a more of an aggressive rider
08:41because being in California, the soil's really hard.
08:44So you've got to be really patient, you know, easy on the throttle.
08:47So I think sometimes when Joe gets to these races,
08:49as we're watching Chance Hymus, his teammate, try to close in on him,
08:52sometimes he rides like he does on a hard pack track,
08:55which is really conservative and that might hurt him.
08:58Now, with Chance Hymus, let's see if he can keep rolling.
09:02And as we drop him back...
09:04Yeah, he can hold Hymus off.
09:06Now we've got Cochran and Masterpool still battling.
09:09We are seeing some real progress here from Cochran in this fight now.
09:13As for Masterpool, let's check in with Will.
09:17Jason, you and I were walking around the paddock earlier
09:20talking about Time Masterpool
09:22because we didn't quite see the performance we were expecting
09:24in the qualifying rounds earlier on today.
09:27I spoke to Mitch Payton, team owner,
09:29and then I spoke to Ty himself asking about that.
09:31And Ty did say, well, he didn't get a completely clean lap in,
09:34so that explains those times somewhat.
09:36But he also said, I've got to find some different lines.
09:39They were looking at tape. He said, I was losing time here and there.
09:42But he referenced again, James,
09:44the fact that he didn't have that fitness base.
09:46He talked about this on the podium last weekend
09:48when he kind of faded back off.
09:50He didn't have that fitness base that he would have had
09:52for boot camp leading up to the start of the season
09:55because it was a surprise ride that came up to him.
09:57At this point in the season, James,
09:59how tough is it to play catch-up?
10:01It's really tough.
10:03I mean, it's like starting on a road trip
10:05and you don't got a full tank of gas.
10:07You got to stop for gas a lot earlier.
10:09So that's essentially where he's at.
10:11And I think the hard part for Casey is that
10:13if he hasn't been to a lot of these tracks,
10:15he doesn't have the rely on the line.
10:17Wait a minute. Sorry. Hayden Deegan has gone down.
10:20So now it's Kitchen in the lead
10:23Kitchen in green, Vial orange, and Deegan third.
10:25Also saw Nick Romano in the pit.
10:27Wow, that's a shake-up.
10:29Yeah, I was wondering.
10:31I'm wondering what happened to Hayden
10:33because this is what I mentioned earlier.
10:35He had to be careful of not over-riding this racetrack
10:37and go down because you want to send a message.
10:39So maybe it was just something, a lap ride
10:41or a typical fall over, but now
10:43the one guy he probably didn't want
10:45is that fast qualifier, that number 16,
10:47Tom Vial and his friend Levi Kitchen.
10:49He wants to probably have a chance
10:51to get back at Hayden as well for that first race.
10:53Well, these were probably the two riders
10:55considered Deegan's biggest competitors
10:58coming into the championship.
11:00Been a rough go as of late for Kitchen
11:03who wasn't on the podium, I believe,
11:05six straight photos, then finally got a third
11:07last time out at Red Bud.
11:09Deegan is back, and he is putting heat on Vial.
11:16And the Deegan fans, they line the hillsides
11:18everywhere we go. They're fired up now.
11:21And Hayden's been really good all year long.
11:23Once he, if he makes a mistake,
11:25being able to get, or somebody pass him,
11:27able to get back around him.
11:29So you're going to watch Hayden try to get back
11:31and at least stop the momentum and have Tom
11:33don't believe.
11:35Let's jump the quad right there.
11:37Let's see, he's going down this hill,
11:39charging pretty good. Let's see if he just
11:41loses the front end in these ruts.
11:45Yep, front end goes over these ruts,
11:47so it pops out. So Hayden was standing up.
11:49He goes in to lean into this corner.
11:51You can see his front tire pop over that rut.
11:53Got to believe that a little bit was because
11:55Levi kept that gap somewhat close,
11:57and Hayden wanted to prove it.
11:59So, small mistake, but now look what happened, Jay.
12:01Yeah, almost got to Vial.
12:03Now Vial has responded.
12:05Shoshimoto's in this fight now.
12:07Yeah, the problem with Hayden, not only he got
12:09passed by two people, but now he's letting that
12:11number 30, who's been gaining confidence
12:13from last weekend, and maybe even Chance Hyman
12:15if he sees him as well.
12:17He's had a five-rider battle
12:19in this 250 Moto 1.
12:27Nice little turnaround, by the way, for Kitchin.
12:29I mentioned all those motos off the podium.
12:31I mean, he was then starting to move out
12:33of the top five in some of the races.
12:35Big if he could win this one.
12:37Yeah, and you talk about confidence being out front.
12:39He just ran a 2.08.
12:41The closest time to that was
12:43Joe Shimoda at a 2.10.2.
12:45So over a second and a half faster
12:47than anyone on a racetrack, and that's why he's got a gap.
12:49Levi
12:51finding it right now. Deegan going back
12:53to work on Vial with the Honda riders
12:55right behind him.
12:57Shimoda and Hyness.
12:59That is still MasterPool.
13:01Cochran! Oh, they almost come together!
13:03How did Cochran save
13:05that MasterPool cross right in front of him
13:07in midair?
13:09Wow.
13:12Whoo!
13:14Look at this challenge
13:16from Shimoda on Deegan.
13:18We're in the second half of the season.
13:20You know what time. That's Joe time.
13:22Joe Shimoda's starting to come on.
13:24Let's see if he can get inside of Hayden Deegan.
13:26It's going to be hard to make a power move
13:28on that Yamaha.
13:30Oh, yeah, they're always quick. Into the downhill.
13:32Shimoda
13:34all over him.
13:38Let's listen in.
13:42Oh, spectacular
13:44racing. J.T.?
13:46Well, for Hayden Deegan, I think it's really important
13:48here to just calm down a little bit.
13:50You see him making lots of mistakes,
13:52and that's pretty typical right after a crash
13:54because your heart rate explodes.
13:56It jumps through the roof. You get this spike,
13:58and then mentally and physically, you just have to take
14:00some deep breaths, control your breathing,
14:02and calm back down. So I think if he can withstand
14:04this charge from Shimoda, get his heart rate
14:06back up, he's going to be able to do it.
14:08He's going to be able to do it.
14:10Get his heart rate back under control.
14:12He may be able to work back forward,
14:14but this is pretty standard after a crash.
14:16Everything about you wants to freak out.
14:18You want to panic, but you feel like you just threw the race away.
14:20He's got a lot of time left.
14:22He's got 17 minutes plus two laps to sort this thing out.
14:24And just to kind of expand on that more,
14:26this is new for Hayden
14:28because every time he's went down,
14:30he's been able to close in on these guys,
14:32and I think what he expected, once he got back up,
14:34he would get around Tom Bial,
14:36and all of a sudden, he sees Levi Kitchen
14:38pulling away, Tom pulling away,
14:40and he's got Joe Shimoda, so it's a different
14:42position that he's been in
14:44all year, and now you kind of start to see him
14:46have to figure that out, and I think that's why
14:48he's making that mistake, J.T.
14:50Now the thing for Deegan is
14:52those final five to ten minutes
14:54of the race is where he's really had
14:56the magic, and we're not quite there
14:58yet, but a lot has changed.
15:00Not just the mistake from Deegan,
15:02but the return of
15:04Levi Kitchen. This is the
15:06Levi Kitchen we expected to see all
15:08summer long. He has pulled out four
15:10seconds on Bial.
15:12And Shimoda is not
15:14done with Deegan
15:16showing him a wheel everywhere.
15:18Yeah, Joe's really good in those sand rollers,
15:20and Hayden's struggling, so I know
15:22he's worked on his sand, but this track is a little bit
15:24sandier than a lot of his other tracks.
15:26I'd probably say the sandy is one outside
15:28of Southwick, and Hayden won that
15:30race, but he did struggle last year in the sand,
15:32so maybe he had a little bit
15:34conditions and whatnot, but he's got a problem
15:36with that number 30 on the HRC
15:38Honda and Joe Shimoda
15:40trying to get around him.
15:42They've dropped Hymus. He had two bad laps in
15:44a row. About a second
15:46and a half off of these two, so he's no
15:48longer lurking.
15:50Here we go.
15:56To Will.
15:58Guys, I'm just looking at the lap times there.
16:00Tom Bial ahead of Hayden Deegan,
16:02and once again, he's put in a faster lap
16:04time. When I spoke to Ian Harrison,
16:06the team manager at Red Bull KTM
16:08earlier on, I said, have you talked to
16:10Tom Bial at all about what you think
16:12he needs to do moving forward? It's a tricky
16:14situation, because we're talking about a highly experienced
16:16rider in Bial,
16:18and Ian said, there's only one thing
16:20I told him, and that's that you need to dig
16:22deep, and you need to get more grit, because
16:24when he was referring to Hayden Deegan, he said,
16:26that guy has grit. He has
16:28determination. He said, you cannot rest
16:30at any point. If he is behind you,
16:32you need to respond, and I'm just
16:34looking at this, James, now, and I'm feeling like this is
16:36a Tom Bial who's potentially just
16:38responding more to the guy that he knows
16:40is behind him and what he's capable of. Oh, Will
16:42Kitchen has made a mistake.
16:44Bial not only responding to the challenge
16:46from Deegan, but now has a shot at the
16:48lead. Yeah, I think that
16:50corner is starting to get a hook in it, and
16:52it's catching these guys out, because they're going down that hill,
16:54leaning that bike over, and now
16:56starting to get an L-shape, and I believe Levi,
16:58just like we saw Hayden, struggling.
17:00It is the slowest part, but if I'm Tom
17:02Bial, I'll be like, well, thanks, coach.
17:04What else you got for me? I know you got to be
17:06tough, but give me something else.
17:08Hey, here's what the Kitchen
17:10mistake impacts, not just Bial.
17:12You do not want to
17:14give wind in the sails to Deegan,
17:16and now he can see the leader again.
17:18Kitchen was gone.
17:20Can't believe we're only just halfway
17:22through this moto. So much has transpired.
17:24Reminder that Monster Energy
17:26available at Quick Trip.
17:28Shimoda and Deegan still slugging it out
17:30of mid-lap traffic now.
17:32Oh, I think
17:34Shimoda's made the pass. I was about to say,
17:36I think Joe's the fastest
17:38rider on the racetrack. He's just getting stuck
17:40behind Hayden. Now,
17:42let's see what Hayden does, because
17:44he hasn't been in his position, and
17:46if these guys drop him,
17:48it's going to be tough on him immensely,
17:50but now, let's see if Joe
17:52can keep that momentum up and go up
17:54and get around Tom Bial and go after Levi Kitchen,
17:56but Levi's pulled out in two seconds
17:58again on him. Man, he definitely has pace
18:00today. Okay, the
18:02lap time, Shimoda,
18:04yeah, about four tenths
18:06quicker than Bial,
18:08and he was dealing with Deegan
18:10at the time. Now he's got a clear shot
18:12at the 16th.
18:18Dropping down Mount
18:20Martin, 500 feet to the bottom.
18:22Yeah, I've noticed
18:24Joe's been really strong on the downhills.
18:26I don't know if they made some changes to the Honda,
18:28or he just feels more comfortable, but
18:30he's closing in a lot on Hayden going down
18:32those hills, and he just closed in on Tom, so
18:34watch for that. Right before
18:36the finish line, there's a pretty steep downhill
18:38where Hayden Deegan and Levi Kitchen
18:40crash. See if Joe can close in on
18:42those guys as well.
18:46What direction will this go?
18:48Bial, can he close to Kitchen?
18:50Bial going to have to deal with Shimoda.
18:52Here's the corner where Kitchen made a mistake.
18:54Clean this time. Look at Joe!
19:06Yeah, I think he said it.
19:08It's Joe time now.
19:10He's pulled away from Deegan,
19:12and now he wants second from Bial.
19:14See if Tom goes. Oh, yeah, nice
19:16move by him. I thought he was going to go outside.
19:18He was going to leave that inside open, but
19:20Joe's been really quick in these sand rollers as well.
19:22It's like he's on the opposite timing
19:24of most of these guys, so let's see
19:26if he does that same thing, if he can get a run.
19:28Here we go.
19:30Trying to set himself up for the move!
19:32A big triple to the sand rollers!
19:34Can he hold it from the outside?
19:36Yes, he does!
19:38Power move by Joe, and
19:40just like Chase Sexton, getting on the opposite
19:42ends between the rollers,
19:44there's no ruts in there, so everybody's
19:46going double, double. Once he throws that
19:48triple in, it's a lot easier
19:50and smoother, JT.
19:52Yeah, and you notice how fast Joe Shimoda was going
19:54through the beginning of that section.
19:56He was wheeling through the bumps,
19:58which allowed him to gain all that speed, get the timing,
20:00and then go for that triple, where Tom
20:02a little bit slowly just didn't have the
20:04aggression early on. The pass, though,
20:06is set up just like we opened the show.
20:08The pass is set up by the beginning of those
20:10sand loops, building all that speed,
20:12which then allows him to go for that triple
20:14later on in the section.
20:16Thank you, JT. Let's see if he can use that on kitchen
20:18as you watch a huge battle
20:20for seventh in the bottom box.
20:22Brought to you by Thor, that battle box.
20:24Anstey, Cochran, Savace,
20:26789, Jordan
20:28Smith, 10th. These guys are really
20:30duking it out.
20:32Anstey looking to make a move,
20:34I think, there on Cochran.
20:36This is where Casey,
20:38being a rookie,
20:40learning the lines and what his team was saying,
20:42he's got better lines than himself.
20:44This is at the end of the race, figuring that part out.
20:46He'll come here next year and know that's not a good spot.
20:48Nice response by Levi.
20:50Joe was right on him, and now
20:52he responded. See if he can get around these
20:54lap routers, because we know how fast Joe
20:56has been in these sand rollers.
20:58If Anstey holds on,
21:00eighth would be the best of the year
21:02for him. Seventh, even better than that.
21:04Of course, only joined PromotoCross
21:06two races ago at
21:08Southwick. Get an update
21:10from Will.
21:12Talking to Max yesterday,
21:14he gave me a different, shifted perspective
21:16on his season so far. You said this is
21:18the best result. There was a lot of expectation
21:20coming into Southwick for him. He said,
21:22hey, these rounds here to finish
21:24off PromotoCross, these are bonus
21:26rounds for me. He wasn't supposed to be
21:28moving to the Yamaha Star Racing
21:30team until the end of the year.
21:32But he got the opportunity with
21:34Firepower Honda. They were prepared to release
21:36him early. He said, look, these are bonus rounds.
21:38I'm making changes at the weekend that you
21:40would never normally make on a race
21:42day. The idea is, I want
21:44to learn the bike. He said, give me a few rounds
21:46to learn the bike. I'm going to have a good end
21:48to the season. He said, my big goal here,
21:50I have a two-year deal, is to take this
21:52opportunity and make the most of it.
21:54If I use these rounds to prepare myself,
21:56I'm giving myself the best shot at that.
21:58Thanks, Will. He is getting
22:00slowly but surely better each week.
22:02The competition in the
22:04250 class is so close. I can
22:06illustrate it. James, look at the
22:08lap time for Kitchin and Shimoda
22:10the last time around.
22:12Identical.
22:142.11.821
22:16to the thousandth of a second
22:18Kitchin and Shimoda. Identical
22:20lap time. That's unbelievable.
22:22I looked at it. I'm like, wait, hold up.
22:24Am I seeing double?
22:26Yeah, they're both
22:28pretty good. You saw Levi. He's jumping
22:30that triple, the same thing Joe
22:32was able to get around him. He's got
22:34that part figured out, JT.
22:36Shimoda made a big mistake at the top of the hill
22:38right before they came down, before
22:40the finish line. Watch for this lap. I think that
22:42lap time is a little deceiving because Joe lost
22:44at least a full second. You see how
22:46much he's already closed back in. I think
22:48his pace is significantly better.
22:50That mistake may have thrown the lap time off.
22:52Vial still lurking, although
22:54blocked by the lap rider. Vial is the orange
22:56bike that held up by the green
22:58Kawasaki there.
23:00The one thing about being in second on
23:02this racetrack with these long downhills
23:04is you notice, like Joe or any
23:06time a rider is close to a rider in front
23:08of them, you see the guy in front. They let off.
23:10They just hang on the throttle just a little bit
23:12longer. Sometimes you can close in on
23:14someone just because you're behind them.
23:16I think that's what we're seeing with guys
23:18when they're battling.
23:20Checking in with Vial. Can he
23:22stay with the lead duo?
23:24What order will that lead duo be?
23:26Shimoda,
23:28another chance to attack. Is Shimoda
23:30better in these sand rollers? Has he been better
23:32in the kitchen? Can he close in, you think, through here?
23:34Well, Levi just started jumping that
23:36triple as well, so it really
23:38depends on, as I said, the entrance and
23:40the exit of those sand rollers. If he can keep that
23:42momentum up and Levi makes a mistake,
23:44yes, Levi's doing the same thing
23:46as Joe, but I think Joe's a lot stronger
23:48going down the hills than Levi, so
23:50even if he stays close to him
23:52or even, I think he's going to close in up
23:54on him going on this next section.
23:56As you can see, he makes a mistake here.
23:58Odada's good for Joe there?
24:00No, he wasn't able to jump
24:02that triple, and I don't know if Levi did
24:04as well, because he didn't lose that much time, but
24:06it definitely wasn't what we saw
24:08from Joe when he made a pass on Tom Vial,
24:10which has picked up those lines as well
24:12and kind of keeping Joe on his
24:14two. Now, this is where
24:16Joe's been really strong at. Oh, yeah, you're not
24:18kidding. He just pulled up alongside
24:20battle for the lead.
24:22Bar to bar
24:24with a lap rider. That slowed up
24:26Shimoda just enough for the
24:2847 to hang on. Yeah, and what happened
24:30was Levi messed the exit of that corner
24:32up before that tabletop, and you saw
24:34all that time Joe was able to get. Now,
24:36see the same thing. Now, Joe's on the outside.
24:38He had to let off the gas.
24:40Otherwise, he would have made the pass on Levi.
24:42He still might. He is rolling
24:44right now, but more traffic to deal with
24:46to the top of Mount Martin.
24:48Shimoda on the outside.
24:50Now, this is where Joe's been really strong.
24:52If he can get even, Levi's probably going to
24:54close that door if he senses Joe.
24:56Yeah, there you go. Go down the middle.
24:58Close that. Joe was
25:00really strong on those brakes.
25:04A kitchen just not giving him any room.
25:06No, Levi's just going. He knows
25:08Joe's fast down here, so he's just
25:10blocking him, making sure he can't
25:12get by. There's only certain parts of the racetrack
25:14you can pass, and then it funnels into
25:16one line, so Levi's doing a great
25:18job, JT. Yeah, and coming down
25:20those hills, you don't necessarily have to make
25:22a pass. Like you mentioned, you just have to
25:24pull alongside, and there's a saying,
25:26if you're even, you're leaving.
25:28You can get down to the bottom and block where that
25:30rider wants to go. You don't even have to make a
25:32full pass. As long as you know the line they want
25:34to be in, you occupy it at the bottom.
25:36Absolutely. If he gets past,
25:38Joe's going to be leaving out front.
25:44Oh, this is fantastic
25:46action in a fight for the lead.
25:48Spring Creek
25:50National. Watch this
25:52outside line from Joe.
25:54He kind of stuffed it in that
25:56corner now. I actually believe it's better
25:58for him to have a little bit of distance behind
26:00Levi going into these sand rollers,
26:02because it is kind of one line here, so
26:04he's got to be able to see as he makes a mistake.
26:06If you're too close to the rider in front, you can't
26:08see, so you make another mistake.
26:10Now, get
26:12even or beside him. Now you can put on
26:14that pressure and see if he can get around going in his next
26:16section. Not quite
26:18enough. Five minutes and two
26:20laps to go. Kenseth hanging on.
26:24Joe's jumping that. He carries that momentum.
26:26Gets on the inside of Levi.
26:28This is where Levi made a mistake.
26:30Lap before.
26:32Going to be higher. Joe's going to be...
26:34There you go. Let's see if he can get up the inside.
26:36Oh!
26:38Kenseth fighting it.
26:40And so much traffic
26:42here. Kenseth
26:44split two riders. Well done.
26:46I think Joe should have passed Levi
26:48probably four times in the last lap, but there's been
26:50lap riders in front of him. He really got hosed
26:52there. And he has to let off
26:54the gas, because he's unsure where they're going.
26:56But now look at that gap that he lost because
26:58of that lap rider. Well, what hurt there
27:00is those riders were battling each other.
27:02I know that people are going to say
27:04just move over. They've been
27:06in a dogfight the whole moto as well. I think that's
27:08Phelps on the 435.
27:10Now he probably realizes,
27:12probably feels bad about it, but what's done is done.
27:14Look at the gap. Yeah, and usually for these
27:16lap riders, when they get passed, it's usually one
27:18at a time. Rarely do you get passed, and you
27:20got a battle of, you know, two leaders
27:22battling. So it's just racing. They
27:24have to deal with it. But the worst
27:26part with that was where it happened at.
27:28At the bottom of that hill, you saw
27:30how much time, because he made that mistake behind
27:32the lapper, he lost all that time going up the
27:34hill. So that was a trickle effect. And now
27:36you're watching Hayden Deegan, a lonely
27:38fourth place. Sure, now
27:40he's going to go back, realize, I got
27:42a 42-point lead. Can't finish any
27:44worse than what it is right now. And
27:46he's actually gaining points on
27:48chance Hyman. So he's going to lose a little bit
27:50to Tom Bial, but gain on chance
27:52pretty much even.
27:54And Hayden has a new helmet there.
27:56That's a signature line that Alpine Stars
27:58put together. That thing's going to be up for
28:00sale soon in dealerships.
28:02So that's why he's getting a little different look than usual.
28:04I thought you were going to say it's up for
28:06sale, because usually if I got a new helmet and I
28:08did a bad, it's going to be up for sale
28:10again after a bad race.
28:12A little superstition there.
28:14He might have a same looking but brand new
28:16helmet in the second moto.
28:20Yeah, just couldn't rebuild it after
28:22that fall.
28:24Now this reminds me of Hayden Deegan last
28:26year. We saw as a rookie, he
28:28would be really fast, and we saw Hunter Lawrence
28:30get around him, and you would think most rookies
28:32would, you know, kind of lose it.
28:34I want to be out front. Hayden was always
28:36able to just kind of recover
28:38and still finish in the top five, and this
28:40is what he did last year. He's doing the
28:42same thing right now. So as much as I say
28:44it's a new position for him, this is what
28:46he did to continue to build to
28:48beat Hayden Deegan, and Tom Bial
28:50is still right in front of him, so
28:52he might have a chance to get on his podium
28:54anyway.
28:56Yeah, last year I'd actually say the
28:58thing that stuck out for Deegan most was the
29:00consistency. He didn't really have the ups and downs,
29:02and there could be more ups,
29:04because as you just saw, he
29:06now has Bial in his sights,
29:08and as always, the last
29:10five minutes of the moto,
29:12I guess we could start to say that's Deegan time.
29:14He has Shimoda and Bial in his sights.
29:16If they don't get on it, they're going to be
29:18in the danger zone.
29:20Just a quick update, Brent
29:22Duffy, mechanic there to Hayden Deegan,
29:24just reading his board there, and it just says on it
29:26it's go time.
29:28Well, I
29:30just want to propose something. Now, if you've been
29:32watching all along this season, you know that
29:34Hayden Deegan has gone down to a
29:362.10 lap time when he starts feeling it.
29:38These guys have been hovering around
29:402.12, 2.13.
29:42Now, I don't want to say he's going to go to
29:442.10 land again, but if he does,
29:46nothing is off the table just yet here
29:48with a minute and a half plus two laps to go.
29:50That's a great point, JT.
29:52He has bridge gaps to the lead
29:54like this several times this
29:56year. How much
29:58does he have left speed-wise in the tank?
30:00Yeah, I think it's
30:02going to be a little bit tougher. This race seems
30:04different to me. Hayden's there.
30:06It seems like Joe's made that mistake with that
30:08lap router. Tom's getting caught up behind him.
30:10In the past races, when Hayden's
30:12been able to do that,
30:14he's looked more comfortable. He's always had
30:16that speed. This one, he just looks uncomfortable
30:18even running this pace.
30:20It might be a little bit harder this time, but
30:22nonetheless, you never know when you're going to fall
30:24into danger zone. He did do
30:262.12. That was a little bit quicker,
30:28about a second quicker than the
30:30Mario, but not the massive
30:324 or 5 seconds that we saw
30:34at high point. But two laps to go
30:36board is not out yet.
30:38Next time around.
30:46I've seen multiple
30:48motos like this this year, James,
30:50where different riders
30:52at different stages of these races
30:54are the guy. Deegan early, then it
30:56was Kitchin, then it was Bial, then Shimoda
30:58and Deegan again. It's been fun to watch.
31:00Yeah, I really think Levi
31:02and Joe have been the two strongest
31:04ones in this race. I think
31:06Joe had a lot of momentum. For him to
31:08be stuck behind Hayden, get around him,
31:10get around Tom, and then close in like he did
31:12on Levi, that lap
31:14router really cost him as far as just
31:16the momentum and the time he lost. Now,
31:18this is where that experience
31:20of Hayden, Deegan, and coming back
31:22and being able to run these guys down at
31:24the end of the race falls in because he might
31:26not be the fastest, but Tom Bial knows
31:28he's there, and Hayden, that confidence
31:30might allow him to at least get around Tom and get on
31:32that podium.
31:36Might just be that
31:38grit that the KTM team is
31:40talking about.
31:42Thanks, coach.

31:52of a kind racing weekend. You don't want to miss
31:54full day of activities Friday
31:56and Saturday, including

32:00conference, live entertainment, and up
32:02close opportunities with your favorite racers
32:04that you've come to expect. Go to
32:06supermotocross.com for
32:08details.
32:10A playoff race is in September.
32:12Man, you hope we have action like this.
32:14Shimoda and Bial
32:16fighting for second. Bial on a roll.
32:18Joe made a mistake coming down that hill,
32:20which allowed Tom to close in. See
32:22Tom go around the outside of him, sneak around him.
32:24There you go. And
32:26Bial will now be on the inside.
32:28He has second.
32:30Is there time to run down kitchen?
32:32Oh, there's Tom. Just the momentum of just
32:34all right, now I got around this guy who passed
32:36me earlier. Sometimes that momentum just
32:38continues up, and Levi's right in
32:40front of him, so if he makes one mistake in his
32:42sand roller and Tom gets through,
32:44Tom's going to have a shot at winning this race. I mean,
32:46all 40s guys got a shot at winning
32:48this race. We're 30 minutes into it,
32:50and we're four
32:52top fours within four seconds.
32:54Amazing to have racing
32:56this close, and
32:58Shimoda not letting Bial off the hook.
33:00Yeah, it looks like
33:02Levi and Joe
33:04has been a little bit better than most
33:06through those sand rollers, and Hayden seems like
33:08he's struggling the most out of these four.
33:10He lost more time there, so
33:12lap rider
33:14might have slowed
33:16Shimoda there, who was on the left
33:18side. And you see, because
33:20of that, now look at that blue
33:22number 38 Yamaha in.
33:24Letting it fly, just wheeling
33:26to the top of the mountain.
33:28Is he going to let him go down the inside?
33:30Come on, Joe. I don't think
33:32Joe realized that Hayden was there that close.
33:34Shimoda
33:36fighting back.
33:44And Deegan able to seal
33:46the deal. No, Shimoda comes
33:48back. What a move. It's Joe time.
33:50There you go. Nice move by Joe.
33:52And that has been
33:54the key responding to Deegan down
33:56the stretch. Shimoda did it.
33:58Oh, Deegan sending it on the
34:00downhill. You think these guys hear some of these
34:02comments every once in a while? Uh-huh.
34:04That was a move. That's the most aggressive
34:06I think I've ever seen Joe.
34:08Nice.
34:10You think Deegan expected that? Probably not.
34:12I didn't expect it. I know he didn't expect it.
34:14Vial
34:16going after kitchen. It'll be one to
34:18go. Deegan putting the
34:20attack on Shimoda again.
34:22Now, if I'm Joe, I got to get a little bit of gap
34:24because what I just did, you know that's going to
34:26upset Hayden, so now the gloves are off.
34:28You know, the good thing for Joe,
34:30Hayden has that championship, so he's not going
34:32to be too crazy, but
34:34he's not going to like that as well, the disrespect.
34:38Oh, one lap left, James.
34:40Deegan's right there just like
34:42he always uses the
34:44outside-inside combo. Yeah, you know
34:46Hayden saw Tom do that, so
34:48that's a nice move by
34:50Hayden. Let's see if now Joe can respond.
34:52Hayden hasn't been that strong through the sand rollers.
34:54Joe's got to be a lot closer than he is,
34:56at least close back up at the end of him.
35:02Oh, Joe messed up the
35:04entrance of these sand rollers, and that's pretty much
35:06it right here.
35:08Deegan looking to salvage a podium.
35:10Kitchen,
35:12up to two-plus seconds on Vial
35:14in the final lap.
35:18What a race by all these
35:20guys. I mean, they had their points
35:22of, okay, I'm getting past,
35:24easily just kind of give up, but now
35:26look at Hayden. Because he was able to get around Joe,
35:28why not get 16, too?
35:30Let's gain points on everybody in this
35:32championship.
35:34Oh, it's going to be a battle of wills.
35:36Here's the grit
35:38that the KTM group wanted to see
35:40out of Vial. Can he hold Deegan at bay?
35:44Yeah, to me, it just looks like
35:46Hayden, although he's closing up, guys
35:48make mistakes, and he doesn't look that comfortable,
35:50especially going down these hills,
35:52so I don't know if he can just let off the brakes
35:54and just charge down. I don't think he feels
35:56that comfortable. As you can see, now Tom
35:58was able to pull away, but still,
36:00as much as this struggle is his motto,
36:02he's in third place right there behind Tom,
36:04so, and Levi's
36:06right in front of them, so not too bad.
36:14Kitchin
36:16did a fourth career moto win for him,
36:18first one of the season, hasn't even
36:20been last since the opener.
36:22What a bounce back.
36:26There's some subpar rides
36:28following the season opener
36:30where he and Deegan battled pretty much all day,
36:32and suddenly, Levi Kitchin
36:34Kitchin's
36:36on fire again.
36:38No one's going to put it out this time.
36:40Levi Kitchin!
36:42First moto win
36:44of the year. It'll be
36:46Vial second, Deegan third.
36:50That's a great race.
36:51That was a great race.
36:53These guys race like they had some issues
36:55between each other. A little animosity,
36:57everybody was aggressive, they wanted to go
36:59out and win, and great job by Levi
37:01and all of them. What a great race.
37:05And boy, did he need that.
37:07Got the third,
37:09second moto at Redbud last time
37:11out. Kind of rebuild
37:13the confidence, and it paid off.
37:18And EMBL here, partners
37:20training together during the week at times.
37:22Happy to get the one-two.
