00:00:00...against Bolivia. USA a narrow victory and the American in charge of Canada now
00:00:11Jesse Marsh hopes to
00:00:15emerge unscathed from this meeting with Marcelo Bielsa and
00:00:22these Uruguay players for whom the last few days have not been very comfortable
00:00:27and that is Canada's task to see that it remains that way. Canada have proven
00:00:32themselves to be tough and determined. A tough road it has been for them. Two
00:00:38games against Argentina remember. A hard-fought nil-nil against Chile. A one
00:00:43nil win over Peru which was tight indeed and a penalty shootout victory over
00:00:49Venezuela. That game was memorable for many reasons. Perhaps the goal of the
00:00:55tournament featured in that one in terms of the atmosphere. We can't quite
00:01:01match that here as we get going but let's hope for a celebration of all that
00:01:08is good in football and Uruguay perhaps need that. A bit of needle in the
00:01:13countdown to the kickoff this evening. Jesse Marsh the Canada coach not happy
00:01:21that Uruguay players under investigation following the events here
00:01:25at the end of the game against Colombia. A semi-final. Marsh not happy at all that
00:01:33they have been allowed to feature here. The Conmebol investigation incidentally
00:01:39is set to reveal its findings as soon as July the 17th. Some may feel he was
00:01:49prejudging the issue.
00:01:54Uruguay very strong indeed in their position that the welfare of their
00:01:59family and friends in the stands was being placed in jeopardy.
00:02:07Colombia supporters reportedly in amongst them. It got very fiery indeed for quite
00:02:14some time after the final whistle. Very unseemly.
00:02:22Canada's getting on with it. It was all starting to go along very well
00:02:29indeed for Marcelo Bielsa after a difficult beginning to his time as
00:02:32Uruguay boss. Couple of great World Cup qualifying results. The wins over
00:02:38Argentina and Brazil really set him on his way. But this tournament has proven
00:02:44to be as tough as ever for all comers.
00:02:52The veteran captain didn't feature much in the early part of this
00:02:58tournament and was beaten all ends up by Jefferson Lerma for the goal which won
00:03:03Colombia the semi-final. From a set piece. No doubt Canada will have talked about
00:03:11doing the same. And here's a success story from this tournament for Canada
00:03:14Jakob Schaffelberg.
00:03:23Without a lot of their top guns. Canada starting out tonight including Jonathan
00:03:30David and Kyle Larine up front.
00:03:42Nahita Nandes sent off against Brazil in the quarter-final. Uruguay kept on
00:03:51playing their stuff. Trying to go forward wherever possible but it did go to
00:03:56penalties. Well they emerged victorious.
00:04:02Schaffelberg v Nandes.
00:04:11Mosh in his interview pre-game also spoke about Canada's desire to be fresh
00:04:20and try to pin Uruguay back. And that is actually how this game has started. With
00:04:29all these new players. And here's one of them. Matthias Schoenier. He takes it.
00:04:38He drove it in well.
00:04:43He's a very versatile player as Ladiat.
00:04:48Alistair Johnston was denied a chance to attack that but Johnston and others had
00:04:54a terrific tournament here. The Celtic right back. It's been a really solid
00:05:00showing from Canada in terms of the level of their performance from game to
00:05:03game. And a great deal of hope going forward in the World Cup cycle. For which
00:05:11of course they do not have to qualify.
00:05:16Lariat did well. And what an opportunity tonight for Dane Sinclair. Only his sixth
00:05:22cap the goalkeeper. And through this tournament Max Schapell has been for me
00:05:29one of the best in the tournament anywhere.
00:05:35Moise Bombito. Bit loose that.
00:05:41And equally loose from Maxi Rahor. Marsh only installed full-time a few weeks
00:05:49before this tournament. It couldn't really have gone much better I think for
00:05:53him. One or two poor bounces of the ball early on here. This is the second game on
00:06:01this surface in this stadium. In this tournament in the last few days. And it
00:06:09was a feature of the Uruguay-Colombia semi-final I'm afraid. However neither
00:06:15side made much complaint about it. Argentina have expressed their
00:06:18disappointment about the state of some of the pitches. A rare gripe in this
00:06:22superbly staged tournament I must add.
00:06:39Not the ideal return to duty for Vina that.
00:06:52Canada get the ball nonetheless. Johnston gets it going again.
00:07:06That is a free-kick.
00:07:12And a very early card indeed for Luke de Feugerol. The teenager.
00:07:22It doesn't help anybody to settle in exactly does it?
00:07:52Well very to take.
00:08:13Perhaps tempted to try to test the new goalkeeper there.
00:08:22Cloverley again.
00:08:30Whoa what a finish. Bentancourt turned on it and found the roof of the net
00:08:38brilliantly there. Where has that been for the last few games for Uruguay?
00:08:45Rodrigo Bentancourt brought back into the side for the semi-final by Bielsa.
00:08:56I must say it wasn't one of his great performances all round. But that is a
00:09:00wonderful finish here. Feugerol had to get out a bit quicker. The youngster.
00:09:08Right over the top of the goalkeeper who maybe was going down a bit too quickly.
00:09:21But Uruguay's spirits on the rise.
00:09:37So a fast start for Canada. But from their first attack it is Uruguay who go in front.
00:09:47Bentancourt is the man. Fords haven't been scoring but Bentancourt who I believe has only now scored twice for his country has shown them how to do it.
00:10:08Johnston. Hooked it down the outside for Ali Ahmed who crossed it well.
00:10:16Johnston was in there again. Didn't quite reach him.
00:10:37Jiménez.
00:10:53School of thought in Uruguay. Has it really in the aftermath of the defeat.
00:10:59I know it's easy to draw conclusions based on the result but Uruguay made it
00:11:04a bit too complicated for themselves the way Bielsa set them up against
00:11:07such a talented Colombia side. Trying to plug all the gaps and deal with all the
00:11:12problems. Man marking Rodriguez. Changing the back line around. And none of it
00:11:18worked. But of course if Darwin Núñez had taken any of the three big chances that
00:11:23came his way in the first half. Maybe some of the so-called experts like me
00:11:28might have had a different view of it all.
00:11:32But Núñez didn't and when their chance came Colombia most certainly did. And
00:11:36remember Colombia played 50 minutes down to 10 men following the sending off of
00:11:42Daniel Muñoz.
00:11:49Kone strides on for Canada. And I say he got to it and Rochette the goalkeeper
00:11:54was able to drop on it.
00:12:06Nández
00:12:36a very clear demonstration of the video evidence that it was shoulder as the
00:12:52ball was knocked down to Bentancur and Cáceres I believe.
00:13:36Bentancur and Osorio. I think that's the root of the trouble. But it is so important for
00:13:40Bielsa and Uruguay that we don't get any more major flashpoints. And Bielsa we
00:13:45saw there going out to just have a quiet word with the man in charge here Alexis
00:13:52Herrera. Referee.
00:13:58Of course from Uruguay's point of view there's a sense that they're being a
00:14:02little bit persecuted by the events from the Wednesday semi-final and the
00:14:09investigation after it. Bielsa as you may be aware reverted to type at the press
00:14:20conference unleashing a fusillade against all the critics of Uruguay
00:14:26saying you're blaming the wrong people. And a lot of people in football actually
00:14:30believe that he is right because the question of player safety on the field
00:14:36has been well aired during the European Championships. Even today Leonel
00:14:45Scaloni preparing for Argentina's final said he actually agrees with Uruguay.
00:14:51I don't think Jesse Marsh and his comments have endeared him to Uruguay.
00:15:00Corne brought down by Nandez.
00:15:30I'm going to talk it eventually.
00:15:51Shuffleburg.
00:15:55Johnson couldn't get to it.
00:16:00Nahita Nandez with absolute prime attention at the end of the game against
00:16:12Colombia.
00:16:17After the TV broadcast had gone off the air he stayed out on the field for a
00:16:22very long time with the cameras trained upon him.
00:16:27Shuffleburg.
00:16:33I don't know what you say into the game.
00:16:39Kovic.
00:16:44He couldn't escape the attentions of Laria.
00:16:57As far as Ismael Kone.
00:17:12Steven Estafio, the Porto midfield player has been a regular in that central
00:17:18area just like Jonathan David and Kyle Larine further forward. They're all on
00:17:23the bench tonight for Canada.
00:17:34As of course is the regular captain Alphonso Davies.
00:17:53We shape back line for this game by Bielsa following the semi-final.
00:18:06Nunez denied by Johnston. Superb tackle once more from him.
00:18:12Here's Shuffleburg who has really taken the fight to every team that they've
00:18:16come up against.
00:18:20They've got a really outstanding goal.
00:18:31Against Venezuela.
00:18:35That's a lovely touch by Nunez.
00:18:39At least a bit of work by Saint-Claire to deny Araujo. Araujo could do with
00:18:43ending this tournament with a goal.
00:18:50Osorio, to Kone.
00:18:54Schwanierz.
00:18:59Nice little touch there.
00:19:04I was going to say he couldn't get off the ground but it's rescued by Shuffleburg
00:19:08here. Laria.
00:19:20Plenty of time to make up his mind where he wanted to put that but Araujo
00:19:33really drove it straight at Canada's new goalkeeper.
00:19:50Well given away by Fussiarol. This hasn't been a very comfortable start.
00:20:01Understandably so. Really a big test for him at just 18 years of age.
00:20:09Oh shit. Trying to get it to Nunez.
00:20:50It's been a challenging season for so many of the top players in this Uruguay squad.
00:20:54The likes of Valverde.
00:21:02Shuffleburg.
00:21:12I was going to say, I saw it coming in his direction and the goalkeeper wasn't quite
00:21:18sure whether this was going to drift out behind the line or just drop
00:21:26invitingly for Canada's centre forward and against him Vinha and Caceres did
00:21:32pretty well in the end.
00:21:36A little glimpse of what we've seen a lot of from Shuffleburg in this tournament.
00:21:48Vambito, Rochette in two minds. Oh he's paid for it.
00:22:03Canada have levelled it. Kone scores it and scores it very well indeed.
00:22:12A touch of the bent-on cause about the way that midfield player finished off
00:22:18the job.
00:22:22Canada back on level terms.
00:22:35Vambito got up. Kone certainly onside but it's all down surely to Rochette
00:22:42the goalkeeper. If he stays at home he must be able to catch that. It's over the
00:22:46top of him and into the net and he didn't look particularly sure from the
00:22:51cross which led to the corner either.
00:23:02Not a happy man. Senor Bielsa.
00:23:09But industry, determination, strong mentality, all the ingredients that we've
00:23:16seen from Canada throughout this tournament and they're back on level terms.
00:23:39Only a third international goal for Ismael Kone. Marseille have spent what's
00:23:44reportedly 12 million to bring it from Watford. Not because he's a goal scoring
00:23:50midfield player but because of his other qualities but that was good and now it's
00:23:56set up perfectly for Pellistri to put Uruguay back in front.
00:24:05Or so they hope. Pellistri's not celebrating very much is he?
00:24:14Terrific build-up play, a great link-up play between Araujo and Pellistri.
00:24:32The question is whether it's material or immaterial that Darwin Nunez is offside.
00:24:44He's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball, he's got the ball
00:25:14it is given as offside
00:25:24not a very good build-up play between the two wide men up front perhaps
00:25:29ruined by the actions of the centre forward for Uruguay there
00:25:44um
00:26:04the game goes on
00:26:07Caceres is the cover for the left back who's out the game at this moment
00:26:10Canada are doing a really good job here of imposing themselves as Jesse Marsh was hoping to see tonight
00:26:19on this Uruguay side and there's actually a yellow for Vina for the challenge
00:26:24in the Canada half of the field a moment ago
00:26:29and it was not a very good one on the youngster the Fusarol
00:26:40so
00:26:48the 18 year old Fusarol here
00:27:10Johnston with the throw for Canada the Fusarol went for that one
00:27:40oh
00:28:01that is with the throat
00:28:10so
00:28:1675 000 capacity here and it was absolutely round for the game in midweek the semi-final
00:28:24the vast majority supporting Colombia an incredible scene Uruguay most certainly felt like the away side
00:28:32Uruguay had the bulk of the support tonight in a much smaller crowd for obvious reasons I think
00:28:38incidentally the full-time tenants here Charlotte FC are playing in the MLS away to Cincinnati
00:28:48this weekend they lost her into Miami in their last game 10 days ago
00:28:55no Messi nor Luis Suarez of course for into Miami just now
00:29:00Charlotte a six in the eastern conference of the MLS
00:29:07Cincinnati the new league leaders
00:29:14and a really big interest in our football their soccer in this city
00:29:29so
00:29:36Johnston and also he did well
00:29:43Ahmed to Kone Canada's goal scorer
00:29:51Kone again on the drive
00:30:01they're frustrated for Canada really to make the headway like that and not use it better
00:30:11so
00:30:28had to slide for it no holding back I think
00:30:32Shafferberg was in some danger from his own captain there
00:30:57it's a good run
00:30:58for which he gets nothing on the end of it found an extra gear there
00:31:11runs away from Kone which is not very easy to do and then De Fusaro was trying to shut the door
00:31:28so
00:31:38Bambito
00:31:43and has just got there Shafferberg shrugged off it by Bentancourt Nunes made his run it's gone a
00:31:49little bit further but it's well read very well read by Sinclair most of those incidentally coming
00:31:55into this Canada side are MLS players at club level
00:32:02it's a great ball in to Oluwaseyi and he missed it the Minnesota United frontman
00:32:12I must say this performance level has been really impressive have another look here
00:32:17so it is actually by the tiniest margin Araujo who's given offside Nunes in the middle not deemed
00:32:28to be active even though his presence there might be debated but it was played beautifully
00:32:35by Araujo and Pellistri
00:32:36and by those means Uruguay denied the instant reply to go back in front
00:33:07so
00:33:22they're not entirely convincing from Rush yet the goalkeeper for Uruguay
00:33:27surely so important the Uruguay do show that they can bounce back from a setback such as the one
00:33:32here in midweek in the semi-final especially against the teams showing so many changes as
00:33:38Canada are tonight but it's a very hard-fought game so far and I don't think Uruguay can claim
00:33:47to be in control of it by any means
00:34:00most certainly Bielsa was starting to win over the Uruguay fans especially with those two big
00:34:07World Cup qualified wins over Argentina and Brazil but the defeat by Colombia
00:34:14wasn't down to misfortune wasn't a hard luck story the cards were set to fall in their favour
00:34:21but they just couldn't turn them over and play the hand they were dealt
00:34:29and of course to lose a game of that importance in that style the tactics have been called
00:34:34into question as well as the mentality of the coach and the team
00:34:43and in terms of mentality it's hard to fault the way Canada have started
00:35:03quarter-finalists Uruguay in the last two Copa America tournaments
00:35:08nine times they finished in third spot the last was 2004
00:35:21in this tournament third I think probably buys a lot more credit than fourth
00:35:27as far as the Uruguay fans go
00:35:28maybe beat himself there Pellistri back to Nandes
00:35:42Pombito was there first
00:35:50Bentancourt
00:35:51did that well Araujo Nunez, Darwin Nunez is brought down right on the edge of the box
00:36:21that's it Chollier looked the main culprit
00:36:26now will Nunez take it upon himself to try to hit one here
00:36:33it looks a bit like it
00:36:42he's had three days to stew on the chances he missed against Colombia in the semi-final
00:36:51so
00:37:03remember this isn't Canada's first choice keeper
00:37:06Crepeau normally in goal has been brilliant through this tournament
00:37:21Nunez wants it and hits it well over the top
00:37:51the last sighting of him on this pitch was hugging his family at the end of Wednesday night
00:38:04that was the reverse angle of the moment of build-up play before Kone
00:38:11volleyed it over Rochette to level it at 1-1 for Canada
00:38:21so
00:38:33largely flattered to deceive in the big games in this tournament this front three for Uruguay
00:38:38and just a fear it could become a longer-term problem I think
00:38:43they're very young of course Pellistri and Araujo
00:38:46Nunez put his cares at club level behind him by going on a glorious goal-scoring streak for Bielsa
00:39:01but been a bit harder recently
00:39:04so
00:39:14Johnston looking immediately to see where Oluwaseyi was
00:39:19different style from Canada tonight because normally in that kind of position we'd see
00:39:23Jonathan David going long and then coming short they're having to play their way
00:39:27through a bit more but they're doing it well and Schaffelberg
00:39:31that's it has cleared it
00:39:42terrific build-up play this from Canada sharp
00:39:48accurate in the pass
00:39:49and I think there'll be a lot of USA supporters as I mentioned this is a very
00:40:02strong soccer part of the country a lot of USA fans might be watching this Canada side
00:40:07especially given all the changes and asking themselves why are Canada able to play like
00:40:13this and we really have not been that effective that's just seen over the top by Rochette from
00:40:18Bambito of course there have already been ramifications at federation level
00:40:32for the USA with the departure of Greg Berhalter
00:40:38and the sense that they've got maybe only 18 months now to
00:40:42really get the national side up to the next level
00:40:49different story for Canada Schaffelberg Bambito went for it
00:41:00only left all alone was offside
00:41:19Caceres Jimenez
00:41:26misplaced Johnston
00:41:29so
00:41:51that's a very good win back oh always say he couldn't convert it
00:41:56Ali Ahmed served it up for him
00:42:05the man he's replaced hasn't exactly been
00:42:08free-scoring Kyle Laden but that was a great chance sparing Biola was say
00:42:26I'm gonna get in so sharp cuts out of Gatis pass here goes Kony again
00:42:36I've added the other way into the path of Nunez
00:42:56he said a lot of things about these
00:43:01Canada players really surprised him when he started to work with them Marsh
00:43:07and I think many people have watched them in this tournament and been
00:43:11surprised and impressed by them
00:43:25so
00:43:42Bambito Kony travels well with the ball from midfield keeps it simple this time
00:43:49and we'll say he turned beautiful Rochette once
00:43:54and off the line second time by Nandez saving Uruguay
00:44:02Osorio thought he'd done it
00:44:12real quality work from Canada
00:44:14Rochette blocked the first one but gave Osorio another chance which he seems set to take and
00:44:20from nowhere Nandez got there superbly at some personal cost
00:44:34Canada started brightly Uruguay came on strong but it's Canada closing this first half the
00:44:40Beto's another great little flick on that by Defusaro
00:44:58Johnston again
00:45:02not quite this time for Defusaro
00:45:04Luria his last man Nunez
00:45:11tidied up by Canada's skipper that's a drop of the shoulder by Sinclair
00:45:34Bambito
00:45:41Bentancur didn't give up on it here's Pellistri no way through for him Kony
00:45:51really running the show in the middle of the field against Valverde and Bentancur if you please
00:45:55Osorio he's slotted back in very well in this game
00:46:10Johnston two additional minutes Ahmed
00:46:21Canada win it back
00:46:25Uruguay give it back to Canada Kony
00:46:43Cross didn't come in but a free kick might do
00:46:50so
00:47:00frustrations are growing for him and for Uruguay
00:47:14the way those subs are warming up
00:47:16we could see one or two moves by Bielsa at halftime I reckon
00:47:34Canada finishing this first half very much on top but could they yet go in
00:47:40in front on the scoreboard
00:47:43Srania takes it Rochette didn't grab it but got a free kick and now he's gone down
00:48:06Johnston was offside
00:48:12end to end it most certainly has been but the longer it went the more it was the Uruguay goal
00:48:24under pressure wholesale changes by Canada at the start of this game but the rookies at this level
00:48:35quickly settled in and Bielsa's had a very uncomfortable first half here in this third
00:48:42fourth place playoff despite Bentancur swiveling to put Uruguay in front they never kicked on from
00:48:48there they never established their control for all their superior experience in most areas of
00:48:55the field the youngsters up Bank of America Stadium Jesse Marsh and a much changed Canada
00:49:01side have been mighty impressive in the first half of this third and fourth place
00:49:05playoff 2024 Copa America the penultimate fixture the fresh faces seizing their opportunity for
00:49:13Canada it's not been anywhere near as impressive overall by Marcello Bielsa's Uruguay I have to
00:49:21say that and we got a little inkling even before the team's return that there would be a remedy
00:49:29and the remedy is changes by Bielsa for Uruguay and as you can see Luis Suarez is being introduced
00:49:42there are two at least Ugarte and Nunez withdrawn
00:49:46Georgian de Arasketa is also coming on
00:49:53Suarez hit the post but could not hit the net when he came on as a substitute against Colombia
00:49:59again which started in very testing fashion indeed for the 18 year old
00:50:11Luke de Fujeron early yellow card for him but the youngster from Fulham kept at it very well indeed
00:50:18learning on the job and what a test and a little feather in his cap because he's seen Darwin Nunez
00:50:24off at the break well that's how he should look at it Nunez again has failed to sparkle I'm afraid
00:50:33it was a midfield player got their goal Bentancur very sharp finish by him
00:50:39and they were a little bit unfortunate not to
00:50:42go back in front very quickly indeed after Canada's leveller sweeping move
00:50:50and they're looking for a penalty immediately here in the second half
00:50:55so
00:51:05Matias Viña he was one of the two changes to the starting lineup by Bielsa
00:51:11two full-back positions Viña and Nandes returning Nandes made his presence felt
00:51:17with a brilliant goal line clearance to deny Canada second goal
00:51:21is this to be a swan song tonight from Suarez
00:51:28what a guy could do with that
00:51:31five players in all in Canada's starting lineup making a first start in this tournament
00:51:38and most of them seizing the opportunity in impressive fashion
00:51:43Michelani is the captain underlining his role in the game
00:51:49and he's got a great start to the second half
00:51:51and most of them seizing the opportunity in impressive fashion
00:51:57Michelani is the captain underlining his versatility by slotting right into Alphonso Davies position
00:52:22so
00:52:33Alistair Johnston outstanding again in the first half for Canada nicely done Schaffelberg
00:52:41well they got their wires crossed a little bit in the end Schaffelberg
00:52:47and Mathieu Chaunière Mosh perhaps saying that if Chaunière had continued his run
00:52:58Canada might have been in
00:53:05but it's really quite something to come up with this level of performance without
00:53:10the players who really have made them tick for the last few years most notably Jonathan David
00:53:16in the attacking sense
00:53:20and of course the power and the expertise
00:53:24of the regular captain for Martian Canada Alphonso Davies
00:53:46Jimenez will need a little bit of attention for that
00:54:16yes
00:54:34thank you
00:54:46What?
00:54:47I don't know.
00:55:08Edging toward 90 caps for his country.
00:55:10It's been a magnificent career for him.
00:55:12It might be a lot more, of course,
00:55:14bar the very serious injuries he sustained
00:55:18two or three through his career.
00:55:21But he's always kept on coming back.
00:55:24Maybe a target of his might be to reach 100 caps.
00:55:32A country blessed with many centurions,
00:55:34many great servants.
00:55:37Just dropped on that in time.
00:55:38There are eight players who've played for Uruguay
00:55:44at least 100 times.
00:55:47Diego Godin who finally laid down his sword
00:55:55only a couple of years ago.
00:55:572022, the last of his 161 caps.
00:56:01142 now.
00:56:04Luis Suarez in second.
00:56:09He's ahead of Edinson Cavani.
00:56:12Fernando Muslera who was the goalkeeper for 14 years.
00:56:19They are Maxi Pereira, all 125 or more. Amazing.
00:56:38First time by Rochette.
00:57:09Oh, it's good again.
00:57:13Ahmed, it's been really lively down this right-hand side,
00:57:16Ali Ahmed for Canada.
00:57:22Brushed off it.
00:57:23The longer he thought about it,
00:57:25the more confused he seemed to get.
00:57:27But he got a free kick out of it
00:57:30against Araujo.
00:57:39And it's in.
00:57:55Schafferberg and Schwanierer over it.
00:58:09Schafferberg again.
00:58:13That's been the idea all night long,
00:58:15that sweeping ball out the back gate
00:58:18to where Bambito tries to arrive late.
00:58:33Cáceres.
00:58:34Cáceres.
00:58:36To Bentancourt.
00:58:37Inadvertently, that was the actual
00:58:40link up for the goal
00:58:41converted by Bentancourt.
00:59:05Ball and man arrived at the same time there.
00:59:13Couple of flashpoints on that touchline in the first half.
00:59:21Johnson's a pretty cool operator, isn't he?
00:59:34Suárez back to Viña.
00:59:37Bentancourt.
00:59:43Jiménez.
00:59:49Just cannot play their way through tonight.
00:59:51Uruguay.
00:59:53Unlike Canada, who do so again here.
00:59:56Perhaps the most encouraging feature of this
00:59:58Canada performance so far tonight
01:00:01is that they're doing all this without Jonathan David
01:00:04being the link man so often.
01:00:08Of course, he's a terrific
01:00:11front man.
01:00:12But much more than that to this Canada side.
01:00:14And very often he's the
01:00:16player who drops off the front, comes short.
01:00:19And then he's the one who's going to
01:00:21They're playing a different way without him.
01:00:23And they're doing it rather well.
01:00:33And it's another mistake.
01:00:34This time by Viña.
01:00:37And I would say he tried to buy a free kick.
01:00:39And he persuaded the referee of that.
01:00:44Not a good start for Uruguay.
01:00:46But it's a good start for Canada.
01:00:49Not a good start for Uruguay
01:00:51in this second half.
01:00:55Here come Canada.
01:01:01Made a bit of a meal of that.
01:01:04Palistri got it.
01:01:11That's better.
01:01:12Palistri seen off well by
01:01:14De Fusaro.
01:01:16Really
01:01:17growing into the game.
01:01:18The 18-year-old
01:01:20for Canada.
01:01:22Yellow after only five minutes.
01:01:32Two-cap kit for Canada
01:01:34up against
01:01:37a hugely experienced Uruguay side.
01:01:48Johnston.
01:02:11Rochette looking for a target.
01:02:18Nández.
01:02:31Nández.
01:02:34Another terrific
01:02:36win back by Laria this time.
01:02:38Ahmed.
01:02:42Outnumbered.
01:02:44But he just kept going.
01:02:45It's going to be a Uruguay free kick.
01:02:48They just refused to let Uruguay
01:02:50settle in possession though.
01:02:51Canada.
01:03:01Beresketa.
01:03:13More important, I think,
01:03:14is that
01:03:15this game tonight for Canada
01:03:17because, of course, they will not be playing
01:03:19qualifying games for the World Cup.
01:03:21They obviously have
01:03:23regional tournament between now and the time
01:03:25of the 26 FIFA World Cup.
01:03:27But as co-hosts, they qualify automatically.
01:03:31But they are measuring themselves
01:03:33against one of the historic powers
01:03:35from South America and indeed
01:03:37world football.
01:03:39And they should be proud of themselves
01:03:41the way they're doing it tonight.
01:03:43Nández, different route
01:03:45on the diagonal.
01:03:46Suárez in the race with De Fusaro.
01:03:55Anybody who was fearing for the kid
01:03:57after 10 minutes or so
01:03:59knows better now.
01:04:08That's against a player
01:04:09he knows very well.
01:04:11That's against a player
01:04:12he no doubt grew up
01:04:14watching
01:04:15and watching closely.
01:04:16And now he's against him.
01:04:23De Fusaro,
01:04:2418 years of age.
01:04:30Suárez, 37.
01:04:32Kone.
01:04:45Schafferberg into space.
01:04:48And just maybe caught in two minds there
01:04:50ever so slightly.
01:04:52Laria, as to who to give it to.
01:05:03So two further changes.
01:05:06On the hour mark
01:05:07by Bielsa.
01:05:13But no changes.
01:05:14Canada come again and again.
01:05:17Oluwaseyi was favourite to score
01:05:19but he couldn't squeeze it under Rochette
01:05:21and I rather fancy
01:05:23he mishit it.
01:05:25Had he hit it clean,
01:05:26surely it must have gone in.
01:05:28And now,
01:05:29had he hit it clean,
01:05:30surely it must have gone in.
01:05:32Another let off for Uruguay.
01:05:37Cross from Araujo.
01:05:38Nicely taken down
01:05:39but Canada had too many
01:05:41red shirts in the way
01:05:42for Suárez.
01:05:44Bielsa breathes again
01:05:46because they could so easily
01:05:48be 2-1 down Uruguay.
01:05:54Christian Oliveira.
01:05:57Seen plenty of him during the tournament
01:05:59but not Brian Rodriguez.
01:06:11A little bit downcast as he goes off
01:06:13does Facundo Pelistri.
01:06:18So the two
01:06:19wide men up front
01:06:21who started are both withdrawn.
01:06:26And Alfonso Davies is set now
01:06:28to come on for Canada.
01:06:29It's the first of their changes.
01:06:35For Alistair Johnston.
01:06:42And
01:06:44I'd be very surprised indeed
01:06:45if we didn't see Richie Laria
01:06:47just switching across to the right side.
01:06:49More natural territory
01:06:51but I must say he's looked extremely good
01:06:53as a left back
01:06:54and there's been a lot of talk for Canada
01:06:56of playing Davies further forward
01:06:58and asking somebody like Laria
01:07:00to play at left back.
01:07:10Terrific build-up play again.
01:07:11Watch the ball here.
01:07:13He mis-hits it.
01:07:14If he hits it properly
01:07:16Canada must be in front.
01:07:18And I'm afraid
01:07:19Oliver Seyi
01:07:20has had enough chances
01:07:22to
01:07:23put this game beyond Uruguay.
01:07:25It's a bit like watching
01:07:26Darwin Nunez here the other night.
01:07:27Casares was fouled there.
01:07:33And
01:07:34his night just got a little bit worse.
01:07:36Canada's front man.
01:07:38Now he's on yellow.
01:07:53Uruguay are going to have to find somebody
01:07:55who can spark them to life
01:07:56because it's really not happening for them.
01:07:59Kone.
01:08:00He was being fouled there by Bentancourt.
01:08:24So one yellow card.
01:08:27Two or three big chances missed.
01:08:31That's a lot for Oliver Seyi
01:08:32to put out of his mind
01:08:33but that's what Canada need him to do.
01:08:44Bentancourt.
01:08:49De Fougerol.
01:08:51Ahmed.
01:08:53Kone.
01:08:57He's looking a good player tonight.
01:08:58It's Kone.
01:09:00Marseille bound.
01:09:02Schaffelberg.
01:09:20Canada force a corner.
01:09:51Rodriguez.
01:10:05Rodriguez.
01:10:09Couldn't get into opposition territory.
01:10:12Struggled to get on the field in this tournament.
01:10:14Brian Rodriguez.
01:10:21Vinya.
01:10:40Cristiano Oliveira never really read that.
01:10:42And tried on both sides, right and left, by Bielsa in this tournament.
01:11:12Narvinia is replaced, Lukas Olazsa, one of the small number of players in this tournament
01:11:31actually playing league football in Russia.
01:11:40Krasnodar in his case, and now Luke Dufour-Giraud, who recovered splendidly after all the early
01:11:49mishaps.
01:11:50He's withdrawn for Derek Cornelius, the starting centre-back normally, and the talisman of
01:11:55this Canada side over the last few years, Jonathan David, is now on the field for Tami
01:12:01Oluwaseyi.
01:12:15Forward by Kone.
01:12:20Bombito, Bombito's come over to the right.
01:12:29Cornelius generally plays on the left of the centre-backs.
01:12:59Vavere, Nandes.
01:13:25Nandes again.
01:13:27Did well, Suarez, build-up play better by Uruguay.
01:13:31Can they finish it off?
01:13:32Oh, what a sensational recovery.
01:13:35Cornelius came from nowhere, just on the field and got the all-important touch.
01:13:40The only decent piece of build-up play in the whole second half for Uruguay.
01:13:52Suarez could not have come any closer.
01:13:58Now will that spark Uruguay?
01:14:02Rodriguez did well in the build-up, in fairness.
01:14:06Here's Kone for Canada, up to David.
01:14:22Sees it to be the start of a better level of performance late on here from Uruguay.
01:14:33Shots blocked.
01:14:36Rodriguez hit it.
01:14:49The only spell of pressure in the second half from Uruguay.
01:14:55Can they make it pay?
01:14:59Brought their crowd to life again.
01:15:01Vavere, that's nice.
01:15:05Suarez, that's tame.
01:15:19So, in terms of know-how and experience, Canada shaping to be a lot stronger now with
01:15:25the introduction of their top two players.
01:15:28Here's one of them, Alphonso Davies.
01:15:32And it eventually reached him again.
01:15:37What about the hit?
01:15:38Has the hit!
01:15:54Rochette didn't know for sure whether that was threatening to go inside the post or outside
01:15:59it.
01:16:00There's also a deflection on that from the defender.
01:16:03Apparently it's given us a corner.
01:16:23Schafferberg again.
01:16:56Kone with the throw.
01:17:12Back where we started.
01:17:26Kone again.
01:17:36Bombito.
01:17:43Cristiano Rivera into the foul was Kone.
01:17:59One goal against Peru.
01:18:01One against Venezuela.
01:18:05One tonight.
01:18:07And they've certainly had the chances to register more than one.
01:18:11But it is becoming a little bit of an axe to grind, if you like, for Canada, that they
01:18:22just cannot be more productive where it really counts.
01:18:31Alphonso Davies crossed it.
01:18:49Bombito might need a moment.
01:19:00That was a rare scary moment at the other end.
01:19:05But what a job Cornelius did, that full stretch.
01:19:12Davies who missed it and feared the worst.
01:19:14And then Cornelius blocking again.
01:19:21Take those two moments away from this second half.
01:19:24Uruguay have offered precious little.
01:19:27Given away.
01:19:29David Darman.
01:19:30It bounced off him, rather.
01:19:38Hugely gratifying it must be for Jesse Marsh and Canada to see so many of the backup players
01:19:47coming in tonight and performing so well.
01:19:49Marsh is having a little dab himself here.
01:19:53Your playing days are over.
01:19:57Your position, sir, is on the halfway line, was the riposte to Jerry Vargas.
01:20:07Canada might be said to be shading it in some ways.
01:20:20But it's 1-1 where it counts.
01:20:28Rodriguez again.
01:20:29I know he was sliding across the turf there, but I think Bombito had it all worked out.
01:20:48Uruguay corner.
01:20:49And they didn't waste much time over it.
01:20:54Jimenez trying to force his way through.
01:20:59David trying to reach it, but cannot quite get there.
01:21:27Jonathan Osorio makes his way off.
01:21:31And Ali Ahmed also.
01:21:36Both have played a full part tonight.
01:21:40Theo Baer gets a rare run out.
01:21:42Liam Millers featuring in nearly all the games, if not all of them.
01:21:52Started the first one.
01:22:28Taken by Diarra Schietta.
01:22:31Cleared by Bombito, but not far.
01:22:35Valverde!
01:22:36Every so often, touches of class illuminate the game from him, and that was a touch of
01:22:46class.
01:22:47Really unlucky.
01:22:48This dip on that was something else.
01:22:54But it doesn't go in.
01:22:56Different route from this second corner.
01:23:00Uruguay free kick, and a yellow for Kone.
01:23:56And Diarra Schietta again.
01:24:11Taken down by Miller.
01:24:12And he kept it, more importantly.
01:24:16Davies.
01:24:20Not really on the same wavelength as one or two of the other newbies who've come in here
01:24:33for Canada.
01:24:51Kone charges through midfield again.
01:24:56Kone lets go!
01:24:57Palme d'Uevo, Rochette!
01:24:58Canada score again!
01:24:59Jonathan David has done it!
01:25:01And maybe on course for a great victory for them.
01:25:13Again, Uruguay's goalkeeper doesn't cover himself in glory.
01:25:20It looks good from the perspective of the Canada keeper, and it looks good everywhere
01:25:27for Canada right now.
01:25:37The wait is over for Jonathan David.
01:25:44On target when it really counted in the group against Peru, and maybe this is the goal to
01:25:51give them a third place finish in the Copa America and beat Uruguay into the bargain.
01:26:05It's not been a good night for Sergio Rochette, Uruguay's goalkeeper.
01:26:12It is being reviewed.
01:26:27And the goal is good.
01:26:28And it doesn't look good for Bielsa and Uruguay here.
01:26:35So at last Canada score more than once in a game in this tournament.
01:26:41Very good time to do it.
01:26:58This will not wear well at home.
01:27:04Back in Uruguay, Bielsa was not an easy sell.
01:27:09In his history, taking over the job in Uruguay.
01:27:15He was starting to win people over after a couple of poor results in the World Cup qualifying.
01:27:21The big wins against Argentina and Brazil.
01:27:30Strongly fancied to go all the way in this tournament.
01:27:35Can't get away past Canada in the third and fourth place playoff just at this moment.
01:28:06Turning into another tetchy evening here in Charlotte, North Carolina for Uruguay.
01:28:11They've just got to hit the crosses as over the top by a mile from Jimenez.
01:28:34One sensational effort here from Valverde.
01:28:40Seems to hit it so clean.
01:28:45Maybe the tiniest touch on its way off the stud of a defender might have put a bit of
01:28:49topspin on it.
01:28:50But it just wouldn't drop quickly enough.
01:28:54He's a player of such high quality as Valverde.
01:29:03Some may say there's just a sense that there's something missing for him with Uruguay just
01:29:07at the moment.
01:29:09Flits in and out of the games.
01:29:20Nobody enjoys not winning, but Bentancur sure to be booked.
01:30:10That wasn't a tester for Rochette.
01:30:14Nandes.
01:30:18Stopped in his tracks.
01:30:23By Cornelius.
01:30:36Cáceres.
01:30:39It's a very disjointed performance from Uruguay.
01:30:46The cracks showed for different reasons against Colombia.
01:30:49Colombia down to ten men and Uruguay did make the man advantage pay, but they just couldn't
01:30:54finish off the chances that came their way.
01:30:59Tonight more travelling again perhaps, because they haven't carved out enough chances.
01:31:10But they do still have time.
01:31:29There's Keita.
01:31:51That was Cornelius again.
01:31:57That was Bale.
01:31:58That was Miller.
01:31:59He needed to do a bit better, but well played Bale.
01:32:01And the break is on, except that they're going to be brought back here.
01:32:18I think he's saying sorry.
01:32:31So they dealt with it.
01:32:33And probably for the reason that the ball struck the referee, that he's actually then whistled.
01:32:45And he's saying I'm sorry I've got to apply the often questionable law as it stands.
01:32:51But he did stop Canada from making progress.
01:32:56David seeks to put that right.
01:32:59Shuffleberg went for it but tripped as he challenged I think it's Nandes coming across with him.
01:33:08Have a go at Davids cross.
01:33:39Nice again.
01:33:48Larry has been exceptional tonight.
01:33:51As so many others in the red shirt.
01:33:53Kone's shot parried down by Rochette, straight into the pass of Canada's top goal scorer.
01:34:02Jonathan Davids snaffled it up to put Canada in front.
01:34:12Turning out to be a very bad week I'm afraid for Marcelo Bielsa.
01:34:19And there may be a sting in the tail with this Conmebol investigation to the events at the end of the game against Colombia.
01:34:28Which so divides opinion that whole sequence.
01:34:34Many believe that it was Uruguay who were the wronged party but we shall await the verdict.
01:34:44Suarez gets a corner.
01:34:45And we are in the 90th minute.
01:35:03Nandes.
01:35:05That's nice.
01:35:06Derrizqueta.
01:35:08Takes the goalkeeper out of it.
01:35:11Laria was there again.
01:35:13Held by David.
01:35:43Bombito again.
01:35:46David leaves Nandes on his backside.
01:35:49And Nandes was coming back for a second go there.
01:35:55Canada urged to go forward, which they do.
01:35:58And it's come to bear.
01:36:00As he brings his power and strength to bear, pardon the pun.
01:36:04David was there.
01:36:06Canada come looking for a third goal.
01:36:09Schaffelberg.
01:36:20Not a second to lose the other way.
01:36:22Oliveri did well.
01:36:25Luis Suarez trying to get goal side of Cornelius.
01:36:28And a great piece of work by Sainclair, the young goalkeeper, to deny Luis Suarez a leveller.
01:36:39All the way back down the other end.
01:36:41Bear won't go for that one.
01:36:51Powers may be on the wane for Luis Suarez, but that was his moment to try to roll back the years.
01:37:05Uruguay come again. Jimenez crosses.
01:37:07Luis Suarez does it this time!
01:37:12And Uruguay pick themselves up off the floor, just as he has done.
01:37:21Canada couldn't hang on.
01:37:30One of their all-time greats and their greatest ever goalscorer has done it.
01:37:39And how they needed him to do it.
01:37:41Jimenez showed up big time as well.
01:37:43That was brilliant from Jimenez.
01:37:48The veteran centre-back to a player he has campaigned with for a decade in that famous jersey.
01:38:16Joanie asks the question he knows the answer to.
01:38:21It's being checked, of course, isn't it, Ref?
01:38:23Let's find out now.
01:38:29Not much debate there.
01:38:51What a finale.
01:39:00Canada have been about three minutes away from one of their greatest ever victories.
01:39:09Still work out that way, of course.
01:39:35Jimenez.
01:39:37Straight to Rochette.
01:39:39And straight out by the goalkeeper.
01:39:43In the direction of Oliveira.
01:39:46Quickly back in play.
01:39:50Almost too quick for Canada there.
01:39:57They've left it a bit fine, haven't they, Uruguay, but showing a cutting edge at last.
01:40:06They may have needed to keep it, but didn't.
01:40:09Laverde, step over by Suarez, nobody else read it.
01:40:15Schaffelberg into the space.
01:40:18Jimenez on the stretch, did enough.
01:40:25Five minutes of additional.
01:40:27And it looks like there's no more.
01:40:30Even though we spent some of that waiting for a check on the goal, which leveled it.
01:40:36Very, very near the end of the additional time.
01:40:41Good job, says Jesse Marsh, and he's quite right.
01:40:44Canada played splendidly here in this third and fourth place playoff.
01:40:49Uruguay never really clicked, as in the semifinal.
01:40:54But they did keep going.
01:40:56They had Luis Suarez on the field.
01:40:59And even now, he still knows how to put the ball in the net.
01:41:04And by those means, Uruguay have given themselves a shot of yet ending this tournament as the...
