00:04The former president spoke to The Washington Examiner and shared that he's
00:07rewritten the speech that he will deliver at this week's Republican
00:10National Convention in the aftermath of Saturday's assassination attempt at a
00:14rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump told reporter Selena Zito that he had
00:18originally planned to talk about President Joe Biden's policies in his
00:21speech, but he has now changed course. He said, in part, this is a chance to bring
00:26the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot
00:29different, a lot different, than it would have been two days ago. Trump was shot at
00:33Saturday's rally by Thomas Matthew Crooks when he looked to his right. In
00:36his interview, he noted that he nearly always faces the crowd head-on and rarely
00:39looks away, a move that he implied likely saved his life. He said, that reality is
00:44just setting in. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking
00:48today, would we? Trump also was asked about the moment where he raised his
00:52hand in a fist and could be seen saying, fight, to the crowd. He said he wanted to
00:55reassure attendees that he was fine and that, quote, America goes on. He said,
01:10Trump flew to Wisconsin Sunday in advance of the convention. Also on Sunday,
01:14President Joe Biden addressed the country twice, calling for unity and
01:17condemning the shooting.
01:19I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in
01:22our politics and to remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies. We're
01:28neighbors, we're friends, co-workers, citizens, and most importantly, we are
01:33fellow Americans. For more on this story and all the latest news, go to THR.com.
