Biden, Trump hold first presidential debate

Donald Trump’s backers declared victory in the first presidential debate of the 2024 presidential race, after Joe Biden's shaky, halting performance on June 27, 2024. Speaking in the media ‘spin room’ after the debate concluded in Atlanta, Georgia, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said that Biden, the Democratic candidate, had been incoherent at times and that he wondered who was making decisions in the White House. Biden’s backers, meanwhile, said that he had won on issues of substance in the debate, and that Trump had shown himself to be dishonest. Mary Trump, the former president’s niece, told reporters it would be an 'unthinkable tragedy' if Trump was re-elected. During the course of the debate, the two candidates traded barbs on abortion, immigration, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, their handling of the economy and even their golf games as they each sought to shake up what opinion polls show has been a virtually tied race for months.
