00:03:59Recent figures today have suggested
00:04:01that the new cases of onset Riggers disease
00:04:04have almost doubled within the last few weeks.
00:04:07With hospitals almost full to capacity,
00:04:11the government is turning to disused community centres,
00:04:14like this one behind me,
00:04:16to turn into makeshift holding centres for those worst affected.
00:04:20What we're trying to do really is offer some temporary relief
00:04:23for the hospitals by dealing with this problem at a local level.
00:04:27In this centre, we're able to manage a handful of men who are stiff.
00:04:32It's tragic. It's really sad to see what's happened.

00:04:55a man with the advanced stages of ORD was brought in.
00:04:58He was found wandering the streets
00:05:01and being unable to communicate and with no form of identity,
00:05:05he should be known simply as Number 7.
00:05:12For me and for many of my fellow professionals,
00:05:16onset Riggers' disease, or ORD as we now call it,
00:05:20is one of the most fascinating diseases
00:05:22that we've come across probably in the last century.
00:05:25There are no cases anywhere recorded of any women suffering from it.
00:05:31The progression varies from case to case.
00:05:34Some of the early cases, they go stiff
00:05:37and remain stiff for a long period of time.

00:05:47What we've discovered is that there are three distinct stages
00:05:51to the progression of the disease.
00:05:53Stage one is quite subtle, general stiffness.
00:05:57Stage two is a little bit more worrying.

00:06:05Now, when we get on to stage three,
00:06:07that really is a distressing stage.
00:06:10They've also become dangerous, not only to themselves,
00:06:13but possibly to those around them.
00:06:15They become, for want of a better word, zombified.

00:06:44One of the main things is forgetfulness.
00:06:48And, you know, sometimes I wake in the morning
00:06:52and, really, I forget where I am.

00:06:58but it is coming a bit more readily
00:07:02and it does seem a bit frightening.

00:07:11they are a living dead and that's not very nice at all.

00:07:48And some of these people with the illness get extremely violent.

00:07:55then, unfortunately, that's how it's going to have to be dealt with.
