Tok Mat suggests recall petition in line with anti-hopping law

The government should introduce a recall petition in line with recent legal amendments to the anti-hopping law, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

On Saturday (July 13), the Umno deputy president responded to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement about closing loopholes in the law, highlighting that the recall petition system is currently practised in the United Kingdom, where an MP can lose their seat if voters in their constituency sign a petition to remove them for switching parties.

00:00We are grateful to Allah, and to Him we shall return.
00:11We would like to know,
00:13if there are people who are willing to study the Aqta Al-Fatih yesterday,
00:17do you think it is necessary?
00:20Because if it is not possible,
00:22there is a possibility that there will be a sharaton.
00:24The one who is facing the Aqta Al-Fatih is me.
00:28Because we are affected by the number of our MPs,
00:32after the 14th election in 2018,
00:36many of them jumped out of our party.
00:39So we are the ones who created,
00:41under the cluster of legislation and reforms,
00:44under Dato' Sri Azalina,
00:46we have also put forward,
00:49so that the members of the anti-jumping party must be there.
00:54No, our country is always under the control of those who,
01:00sometimes, are more important than the people,
01:06who have been chosen by the people to force the government.
01:12So, that is a good thing.
01:16And I know, in the past,
01:19the people who made the changes were a group of strict legislators.
01:26But many people did not agree.
01:28Even the people who are angry now,
01:30they are the ones who do not agree.
01:32They are the ones who say,
01:34there is no need to cross-floor,
01:36no need to leave the party,
01:38no need to vacate the seats.
01:40If you do not agree with the party,
01:42but do not leave the party,
01:43but support the party on the other side,
01:45no need to vacate the seats.
01:47That is what they want.
01:49If we listen to the video clips from the parliament,
01:53we can see,
01:55how at that time,
01:57the party on the other side was the government,
02:00they were the ones who rejected the proposal
02:04to have a very strict law,
02:08so that the issue of the anti-jumping party
02:11can no longer be done by the members of the parliament
02:14or the state legislature.
02:17In my opinion, it is better to investigate.
02:20That is why I said,
02:21if we do not want to investigate,
02:22we need to correct it.
02:23Let's make a law,
02:24like in England,
02:26there is a recall process,
02:28where if there are members of the parliament,
02:32it clearly shows that they do not agree with the party,
02:35or are not together.
02:37So, the voters in their area
02:40can make a petition,
02:42make a referendum,
02:45make a petition,
02:46and they must gather the right voters in the area
02:51to bring the petition to the parliament.
02:54And those who are petitioned,
02:56more than 50% of the voters there
03:00need to vacate the seats,
03:01and the election must be held earlier.
