00:00Yeah, there could not be a better way to kick off the weekend here at KROQ than with a true LA icon legend
00:07We're gonna talk basketball. We're gonna talk LA for the first time at least on our show and the first time in a while on
00:11KROQ Ice Cube is in the building. Yeah. Yay
00:15I'm good. This is such a Ali and I were so excited when we found out you were coming by
00:20We're like Rick really coming by. Yeah. Yeah, he'll be here. We're like what man, you know, it's uh
00:26it's great to be here and
00:28Yo, I'm glad I'm able to talk to your audience man, you know, it's a good thing
00:32We're gonna talk big three and how big three has been cool now for a minute
00:36But it's about to get a lot cooler on a local tip and we'll get into all of that
00:39But I do want to start with why we're talking basketball because the LeBron Bronny thing you're a big you're a Lakers fan
00:45Yes, you also know a thing or two about having your son following your footsteps
00:48Yeah, so I feel like there's not a lot of people that can speak to what is going on better than you
00:52What do you think just as a general thing Bronny on the Lakers? Will this be a success or will this be a failure?
00:58I think it's gonna be a success. I dig it
01:03For one the Lakers have never really leaned on draft picks
01:08since Magic Johnson and
01:10James Worthy maybe but we usually you know, our organization has gotten success from
01:18Seeing other guys become all-stars and then saying do you want to be a Laker, you know?
01:24so
01:26we're not really looking for the draft and
01:30If this is gonna make LeBron happy like why not have you been paying more attention to
01:38WNBA what was Caitlin Clark and the whole and Angel Reese and that whole drama?
01:42I feel like everything's really been blowing up women's basketball, too
01:46Yeah, it's been nice, you know to see
01:50You know the league gets so much attention
01:53You know one thing about the WNBA was great is dude, you know, the the players want to win and
02:02You don't always know that about the NBA players, right?
02:06They don't win. I don't think they get a flight home
02:10It's still you know on the level of passion passion for the game
02:15and that's what that's what really gets fans going like
02:22When you're not sure if your team want to win or your guy is worried about his brand or is he you know
02:28Too much low management and you know
02:32You know, I love Kawhi, but do he want to win a championship? I don't know, right?
02:37Yeah, sometimes I'm at these games
02:38I'm a crypto and I feel like it feels like everyone's moving at about 40% speed until like
02:43Three minutes left in the fourth and then it's like well, these guys are good now all of a sudden
02:46I can't figure it out. But Kaitlyn Clark interesting because you offered her five million dollar deal right to come join big three
02:51Yeah, we did. We thought that was a I mean for one, you know, our sponsors were
02:58like adamant that it would unlock millions of dollars right right she came to our league because of
03:04the attention of you know, um, you know her playing against guys and seeing if if it uh
03:12You know if the game transfers
03:14And so, you know we went for it and
03:19It didn't work out. But you know, we wish her all the best
03:22We will accept that offer if you'd like to give that to Ali and I yeah, I don't really play but I'll try
03:29I feel like I can kind of fake my way through it
03:33No, not just for Kaitlyn, you know, she was the one who's you know
03:39Smashing the ratings and yep
03:41You know
03:44Find your players up for the big three because you know
03:46You think of NBA just sort of NWNBA traditional drafts and stuff and you kind of have a very big mix of players in the big
03:53Three, how do you go about finding them and signing them one thing about basketball players?
03:59their community so
04:02Whether they're in the NBA or not, they still
04:05communicate and they're still
04:07involved and they still
04:09Work out together. They pick play pickup games together. And so
04:16You know, we still you know, we just tapped into that community with our you know head of basketball operations
04:23Thomas Scott who's Byron Scott's son and
04:27Him and Dion Glover. These are two guys that stay tapped in and at our combine
04:33We have over a hundred players going for like 22 spots. It's crazy
04:38Yeah, as long as you're over 22, I think that's the age right 22
04:41You can go you can actually anyone can go out so you maybe didn't play college ball
04:45You didn't play pro ball, but you're like crushing it on your local playground
04:48You have been for a while. You could actually get in the big three and you talk about passion
04:51This is all passion because this is not about a big payday
04:55This is like it is all about passion all about guys who still
04:59Have that chip on their shoulder and got the passion to win a lot of our guys play overseas
05:05all around the world and
05:08They still want to show you what they got on the on the on a you know high level
05:14Games on CBS, you know, if you can't make it over to the Honda Center this Sunday come check us out on CBS
05:21You know game started noon. This is what's so cool here
05:24We wanted to say for locally this Sunday coming in hot
05:28Heading to the Anaheim and I'm at the Honda Center and we put up the link for tickets everything like that
05:33You can get them at the big three
05:35Tickets at big three slash tickets calm. This is like
05:40Becoming a big thing now
05:422017 when you had the concept when this whole thing started
05:45Did you picture if you could have said?
05:46All right
05:47Where do we want to be in 2024 as a league yet to go through Cove and all that?
05:50You think like it's bet bigger better now than it's ever been
05:54Definitely bigger and better than it's ever been without a doubt
05:58You know our numbers our engagement are what they call
06:02Impressions, you know, you know over 80 million
06:06worldwide and so
06:09You know, the league has caught on fire. And so it's really about now
06:13We're selling teams. So we're gonna have a team based in Los Angeles, which is cool because we'll have big three every year
06:20That's great on out team, you know right now Houston
06:25Detroit and Miami we're gonna sell the other eight franchises of the league
06:31Franchises and hopefully expand to 16 teams
06:34Maybe 20 and you're selling two groups, right?
06:37So if Klein and I were to start to go fund me and be a part of I mean saying I own a team
06:43That's like the biggest
06:46To get a piece what's the team gonna go for these?
06:49starting well
06:51Pretty penny. Yeah, definitely a pretty penny
06:55We sold those teams at 10 million apiece
07:00The other the other
07:03Love is a go for more than yeah
07:05We got a couple discover cars. We could split it and see what we could get discover
07:09Let me ask you ice cube has been the building at K rock right now and you know
07:13Talking basketball and then we'll get into other stuff going on LA and everything else
07:17But if you think about it for a second, you've got great competition happening
07:22Gambling and sports is now bigger than ever before
07:25Do you have the inside skinny on anything if I'm gonna put some money on any of these games?
07:30Can you you cannot tip me off on nothing? All right. Yeah, I try sir
07:34You know follow the league
07:36Which which rather which rapper friend or foe of yours over the years?
07:40had the would have the best chance of getting in the big three because we've seen videos of some some of the
07:45Yeah, like snoops good. He can ball like there's some actual good athlete rappers. Who do you think is the best you've seen?
07:52Well, you know, there's some good definitely some good ones out there. You know, I don't know if they could play in this league
07:58you know, it's just
08:00these guys have honed their skills and they know every trick of the trade and
08:07They battle, you know our guys
08:10Play hard. So I don't know if these rap dudes, you know when they
08:15Come out the club, you know, they're off the Hennessy, you know
08:20They go play with a blunt name mouth, you know, I don't know if they ready for Joe Johnson on the give-and-go
08:27Well, I mean you've done a lot of different things obviously big three is a big passion of yours
08:32But music TV of all your accomplishments. What do you think is the biggest one starting the big three?
08:39Winning your Grammy or getting in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
08:42I'll throw in your kids too if you want to do that kids without a doubt, but
08:47Coming in at a close second, you know getting this league off the ground has been the hardest thing I've ever attempted in my life
08:55and
08:57you know, it's been eight years now of
09:01pushing a big boulder uphill and it's cool to to really kind of
09:07See where we're starting to roll downhill. And so, you know, I'm proud of that and
09:15You know coming in at a close sec
09:17I mean third would be you know making it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been
09:21one of those things that
09:24You don't dream of you like you start your career you do your thing and then one day, you know
09:30Somebody let you know. Hey you did enough to be you know
09:35Basically honored, you know in this place, you know in history, so it's funny
09:40I saw Dre just got his star on the Walk of Fame a few weeks ago
09:43And he mentioned your name in his acceptance speech as one of the many people that got a star way before him and he goes
09:48What's up with that?
09:49But you you would agree you deserve to get your star before Dre, right?
09:52I mean, I wouldn't say that, you know Dre I wouldn't be here without dr. Dre, so he definitely
10:00Should have got a star in music first, you know, I need one in movies now, you know, I know
10:07Well, you've been an LA icon for a long time now
10:10And I feel like every day now I read about different celebrities who are leaving Los Angeles
10:14And they're so frustrated with the way the city's changed over the years
10:18Do you ever see a world where ice cube will not live in Los Angeles?
10:22I don't see that world, you know, even if it's a earthquake
10:28That's a new tourism campaign right there
10:30Yeah, I'm not going I've been to a lot of places in the world and to me nothing
10:37offers more than Los Angeles
10:39also when I listen to and I think very few songs hold up in the way that
10:45Today is a good day holds up and especially in the in summer for I don't know what it is
10:50Listening to that song driving around in the summer in LA
10:53It's the song has got to be close to 30 maybe over 30 years old
10:57Yeah, and only you only notice that occasionally because there'll be a reference. You're like, well, that's super song. They're not team anymore
11:03What would you think about you ever think about updating? I know it's perfect the way it is
11:07But would you ever think about updating the song with modern-day references?
11:10You know Ron Isley who?
11:13Who did you know? It's the Isley brothers music footsteps in the dark. It's a loop
11:20Iconic he he hit me up about a year ago and said
11:25You ever thought about updating the song and it's just it's a brilliant idea. So
11:31Yes, I would think of
11:35Yeah, I mean so many just be all about tick-tock and make me sad I think yeah, I think I'd like the old-school better
11:41Yeah, everybody, you know, everybody's gonna have a favorite. I know well speaking of updates
11:46I know there's been a lot of talk about the next Friday movie
11:49Another one of the classics we just had we had Neil Brennan on we're talking about half-baked
11:53We say is that the best pothead classic comedy about Friday's the best will always be the best
11:57It's always gonna be the goat when it comes to pothead movies
12:02You agree with that and will there be another one?
12:04I think you said maybe four is on the way or moving closer to happening right moving closer to happening
12:11You know, I'm still like, you know
12:15I'm still teaching Chong
12:18You know still, you know
12:21you know loving the
12:23still smoking and
12:25Up in smoke and all those, you know, it's uh
12:29but yeah, you know, we were this close to
12:33finalizing the deal to do the fourth one so well and it's the almost the 30th anniversary right of the original and
12:41I was thinking about that Friday feeling and how it's changed over the years
12:45Do you still feel like that Friday feeling is a thing because with four-day work weeks and remote work
12:50I feel like everyone takes off on Friday. Anyway, I
12:53Think it's a feeling, you know Friday is still, you know, a lot of people's favorite day of the week
13:00Just because you know, you know if I'm having a good time on Friday, and I still got Saturday and Sunday
13:10You know, especially when when all the work is done and you just like yeah, it's like
13:15It's just a great feeling. We got ice cube at the k-rock studios right now on Klein alley show
13:20We are going to set the clock
13:21This is the only opinion that should matter when it comes to all things
13:24La his entire life has been pretty much right here in Southern, California
13:28We want to know and you got to give us your first thought that comes to mind as we read you a variety of things
13:33The best of the best when it comes to LA in different topics on the clock ice cube alley hit him with number one
13:39All right best local restaurant

14:21And best type of weed to smoke in said backyard, what are you into man?

14:29Me you can't go wrong with that
14:32Best moment in LA history as far as big historical moments Wow the best moment in LA history
14:42Wow, that's
14:45That's a lot to cover. Yeah a lot to think about. I mean, you gotta be like one of the Olympics maybe
14:53Just smoked all the way
14:55Laker championships, I mean, you know beating the Boston in game seven, you know, that's it's pretty sweet
15:03Speaking of that best sports team
15:05I know you are a fan of a lot of the local teams, but what is the in your opinion the best local team Lakers?
15:12Wrong. It's the new big three team
15:20Most importantly best radio station. I'm a k-rock
15:25That whole thing was a giant
15:27So we can air that over and over again for eternity ice cube. We love you, dude. Thank you for being here
15:32We greatly appreciate it. Remember Sunday Anaheim coming in hot guys. This is big three
15:38You get a lot of games. You've also done a cool thing. We didn't mention this but you combine the basketball with music
15:43Yeah, we got dove see and DJ quick out there down and look if you can't make it check us out on CBS, man
15:50Yeah, I mean they just broke some sort of CB ratings records on CBS
15:54It's also on Paramount Plus as well. But I'm telling you it's a vibe even if you're not like a hardcore basketball fan
15:59It's the vibe is fire
16:01It's ice. Thank you so much for being here, man. Thanks for having me man. Great way to come back a rock. Yay
