Nick Ashooh and Denton Day break down how to bet Jared Goff this season and why they can see him leading the NFL in passing yards
Transcript
00:00It's another year of them playing together, and I think that's the key here, because Ben Johnson
00:05stayed, could have taken head coaching jobs, didn't, and now it's another year of receivers,
00:11quarterback, all together, offensive line playing together as well. You've got at least one
00:16running back in that backfield that you count on in Jameer Gibbs to catch passes for you as well.
00:22There's a lot of ways for this Lions offense to be insanely potent, and if I had to kind of lean
00:27into one that I specifically liked, I'd probably go with the passing yards over the passing
00:32touchdowns, and the reason why I say that is because David Montgomery is going to be in a
00:36spot where he's going to get a lot of goal line touches. They're going to want to hand him off
00:40football, and I think that's going to take away from some of the passing touchdowns for Jared
00:43Goff. I can't tell if I'm stuck in the past or if I'm just too woke when it comes to Jared Goff.
00:50Like, am I holding some of the things that went wrong in Los Angeles too much over his head now
00:56as we've seen him have two really good seasons back-to-back, specifically last season, or am I
01:01too smart to fall into the trap that he had one really, really good season last year, and now
01:06everything that went wrong in years past is fixed? He, to me, is one of the more fascinating quarterbacks
01:12in this league because of that. The job of making it very easy for him to be successful this year,
01:19I mean, they are taking all of the right steps in terms of building a franchise that is going
01:24to be successful for years and years to come. Didn't think I'd ever say that about Detroit.
01:28Signing Amon Ross St. Brown, making sure that he has a left tackle in Panay Sewell,
01:33and then getting a bunch of guys on defense that are dudes. And on top of that, you have a guy in
01:38Dan Campbell and Ben Johnson that the guys love to play for, but there's always that little thing
01:43right in the back of my mind when it comes to Jared Goff where it's going to be like,
01:47he couldn't work it out with Sean McVay. If he couldn't work it out with Sean McVay,
01:51surely everybody else at the NFL is going to catch on to what he's doing and they're going
01:57to make his life miserable again. So I look at some of these numbers, I would actually look more
02:02at the props. I would look more at the props because that 4,000 yard mark in today's NFL
02:08seems kind of easy. In the way this offense is set up with Ben Johnson, that seems kind of easy.
02:14So as I look at Jared Goff, I favor that more than, I know the value is way better for the
02:19touchdowns, for leading the league in passing yards, but I think just his over is the way
02:25safer bet that I feel much more confident about hitting.
02:29Yeah. And listen, I think there's a clear reason why that's the safer play, right? There's a
02:34clear reason why that over is at minus 115 versus a plus 750 bet for him to have the most passing
02:39yards. I just, I mean, I'll tell you what, I hate having books hold onto my money for something
02:44that's minus 115 for an entire season. It's tough. You know, it's tough. Like you don't have
02:49that payoff that you'd expect to get, obviously, if you have him leading the league in passing
02:54yards. But it's interesting when you talk about not making it work with Sean McVay.
03:02That's only partially true though, because we still got the best out of Jared Goff
03:06when he was playing for Sean McVay. So McVay made him the quarterback that he still is today,
03:12but you're right. It's a very weird concept to sit and to talk about the Detroit Lions
03:17and not just as a functional franchise, but a really good front office where
03:21people are getting poached out of that front office as well to go to other organizations
03:25because of what they built. So the Lions have a bright, bright future.
