00:00So what Carrie's doing there now is that she makes that call, almost like a humming call,
00:07and that's just the feeding call, like the bird that the adults will make, and it actually
00:12often will just calm the chicks down and go, wow.
00:23This chick that Kyle and Carrie are examining is the only chick that this breeding pair
00:28has raised this season. It's crucial that the data is gathered quickly and efficiently
00:33to avoid any unnecessary stress for the chick.
00:36Ground hornbills lay two eggs usually in a while, and of those two eggs,
00:42they're laid about five days apart from each other and they hatch about five days apart.
00:48And then the first chick will hatch, and very often outcompete the second chick for food, so it dies.
00:54One of the ways to make sure that that nest is producing two chicks a year
00:59is to pull the chick at a very young age and to rear that chick in a man-made environment.
01:08So essentially what we're doing is just doubling the breeding success of the wild population.
