00:00Next to the U.K. and the British Parliament is meeting for the first time since last week's
00:04general election put an end to the Conservatives' 14 years in power.
00:09Today is set to see the election of a new Speaker of the House of Commons and the swearing
00:13in of new MPs.
00:15We're going to talk more about all of this with our London correspondent, Benedicte Pavia.
00:18Benedicte, what can we expect from today?
00:22A great deal and lots of new faces.
00:25That is the result of the general election, the snap general election called earlier than
00:30anticipated.
00:31That was last Thursday.
00:32And this is the result of very different complexion.
00:36So at 2.30 p.m. British time, we will see those older and newer faces in Parliament
00:44and a complete role reversal switch as far as the two leaders that we know well, Keir
00:50Starmer, who for the first time will be at the dispatch box and as prime minister, Labour
00:56prime minister, the first in over a decade.
00:59And Rishi Sunak, for the time being, still the leader of the Conservatives.
01:03Of course, he's indicated that he wants to step down.
01:07But there needs to be a process and election.
01:09We don't have a timeline for that.
01:10And Rishi Sunak, former prime minister until last Friday morning, is now the leader of
01:16the opposition.
01:18So that will be quite a sight to see.
01:21We're not sure if on those green benches, the very many Labour Party members of Parliament
01:27will be able to fit in.
01:28Of course, they are now 412.
01:31That was an increase of 211, a very comfortable majority.
01:35The Conservatives on the opposition benches are just now reduced to 121.
01:41That's minus 251 MPs.
01:45The Liberal Democrats are now the third biggest party and they have 72 members of Parliament.
01:52That's plus 64.
01:54The Scottish National Party that was in third position in the previous parliament have just
02:00nine MPs at Westminster.
02:03That's minus 39.
02:04You've then got Sinn Féin, who have seven but never take their seats.
02:08They don't recognise the Westminster Parliament.
02:10And other MPs, there are 29.
02:12That's an increase of 15.
02:15So we will see that main business today first is the election of a new speaker of the House
02:20of Commons, the lower chamber of Parliament.
02:23So Bénédicte, the new prime minister, Keir Starmer, will also attend before moving on
02:28to Washington for his first ever summit of NATO leaders as prime minister.
02:33Yes.
02:34So we will hear from all main party leaders.
02:37So of course, the prime minister, Keir Starmer, followed then by the opposition Rishi Sunak,
02:43followed by Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrats and so on and so on.
02:47But an extraordinary day.
02:49The first time that Keir Starmer is addressing Parliament as the new Labour prime minister,
02:56the UK prime minister, of course, and then flying off to Washington for this 75th anniversary
03:03NATO summit.
03:04That is the way the calendar has done that.
03:08And so his first real appearance on the international stage as this brand new prime minister only
03:14elected last Thursday night.
03:17And of course, the NATO summit, we understand the main focus was already going to be the
03:23war in Ukraine.
03:24But now as rescue teams actually complete search and rescue at that children's hospital
03:29in Kiev after those deadly Russian attacks across Ukraine, not just in Kiev yesterday
03:35that killed 38 people, we understand absolutely the main focus will be Ukraine.
03:41And it is very clear that Keir Starmer will have bilaterals.
03:44Certainly his first meeting with President Biden, he'll meet President Zelensky.
03:49And he's already indicated a very strong commitment of the United Kingdom, continued commitment
03:55to Ukraine.
