00:00Floodwaters so high that only the tops of the trees are showing.
00:04Highways and streets turned into fast-flowing rivers.
00:07Rooftops and siding ripped by the force of the winds.
00:11Trees toppled in front of homes and cars.
00:14In Houston, Texas, residents ventured out to assess the damages left by Beryl,
00:19the once Category 5 hurricane that's been downgraded,
00:22but still managed to wreak havoc in her path.
00:25For a Category 1 storm, it's quite a bit of damage for a Category 1.
00:30It's more than we expected.
00:31I mean, this is just the beginning of July.
00:34And for us to have a storm of this magnitude is very rare.
00:39As Beryl plundered Texas and the Gulf Coast,
00:43some 3 million homes were at the peak on Monday without power.
00:47Officials said they're painstakingly trying to repair the damages.
00:51And the acting governor took stock of the storm.
00:55Every storm is a lesson.
00:57And I've lived in Texas now for over 40 years.
00:59We've had a lot of storms and a lot of lessons.
01:02And this storm says even if it's a Category 1,
01:05that might as well be a Cat 5 storm to you if you're in the middle of it.
01:08So the lesson I hope everyone, for this time,
01:11is we take no hurricane or no tropical storm for granted.
01:15While it is now weaker,
01:17Beryl is still expected to cause strong winds and flooding in neighbouring states,
01:21as it did here in Galveston, Texas, on the Gulf Coast.
01:25The storm will go down in the history books
01:28as the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic to date,
01:32with its intensity and its premature timing due to climate change.
