00:00As seen from the inside of a fishing boat, this is Hurricane Francine making landfall
00:06in Dulac, southern Louisiana. Electricity was knocked out for 300,000 people as the
00:12storm moved across the state from the Gulf of Mexico, bringing with it heavy rain, strong
00:17winds and flooding. Earlier, people prepared by boarding up buildings and stocking up on
00:22supplies.
00:23We're out here serving our community. We love everyone here, so we want to make sure that
00:28they have gas for their generators and they have their essentials that they need.
00:33After crashing ashore as a Category 2 hurricane with wind speeds of more than 150 kilometres
00:38an hour, the storm then weakened, but still brought with it a dangerous storm surge with
00:44a flash flood emergency issued for the city of New Orleans.
00:49Thousands of people in parishes around the coast were put under mandatory evacuation
00:53orders, and everyone else in the storm's path was told to hunker down. Many of them
00:59have suffered devastating hurricanes in the past.
01:03We've seen some bad storms. I was here for Andrew and I never want to see that one again.
01:10But we're worried about some of the storm surge, things of that nature.
01:15The Atlantic hurricane season, which began in June, has seen three hurricanes so far,
01:20fewer than scientists were expecting.
