00:00Pakatan Harapan's defeat in the Sungai Bakar by-election is a sign that UMNO has lost its appeal among Penang's Malay population, says political analyst James Chin of the University of Tasmania.
00:15Chin said most Malay votes went to Perikatan Nasional, showing that UMNO is no longer a force in Penang and that they can no longer significantly aid the unity government there.
00:26Chin said PH and its ally Barisan Nasional have their work cut out for them following PN's success with a bigger majority.
00:35Results showed the PN candidate Abidin Ismail of PAS pulled 14,489 votes for a majority of 4,267 votes over his PH opponent Juhari Arifin of PKR, who pulled 10,222 votes.
00:53Meanwhile, socio-political analyst Awang Azman Paui of University Malaya said lower non-Malay turnout was due to political apathy among the Chinese community, who believe the results will not change the position of the state and federal governments.
01:08He said the low Malay support for PH could also be caused by internal sabotage, as UMNO members might have campaigned against the PH candidate.
01:17Awang Azman also said the loss could have been caused by the government's failure to effectively explain national issues such as diesel subsidies to the grassroots.
