00:00Today, we're talking about the editing of sex scenes.
00:07There will come the time when you're faced with your first sex scene, and I'm talking
00:11about editing.
00:12I certainly had my share.
00:19The great thing about indie films is that most likely you won't get a rating, so you
00:24really don't have to be too concerned about what's considered to be appropriate.
00:32But there's a fine line between being artistic or pornographic, and I assume you want to
00:36be the artist.
00:38So here's my take on cutting a sex scene.
00:40First of all, don't be a prude and don't cop out.
00:43There's so many scenes with wishy-washy sex, nothing is more lame than seeing underwear
00:48on an actor.
00:49As an editor, I try to cut around it.
00:52Number two, make it real.
00:54When you're shooting a film, obviously it's simulated sex.
00:58That's why most of the time you have to put the editing in overdrive, because you're trying
01:02to cut around all the wardrobe pieces and the awkward angles that naturally occur.
01:07If you've seen Fifty Shades of Grey, every sex scene in that movie is basically a very
01:12cutty montage.
01:13Number three, make it sexy.
01:16Filming sex scenes is usually not very sexy.
01:19Nobody's really comfortable on set, maybe the cameraman.
01:23There are a lot of bad angles and unflattering positions.
01:26So as an editor, when you watch the dailies, you usually cringe.
01:30But none of that matters.
01:31What you put on the screen has to be sexy.
01:34Number four, be respectful.
01:36As I watch the take, I'm trying to get a sense of how the actors feel about what's being
01:40portrayed.
01:41They usually will voice whatever they're not comfortable with, and I take that as a cue
01:45as I'm editing the scene.
01:48In the previous movie with Mark, I actually had an actress who had a wardrobe malfunction.
01:53She was very worried that we might take advantage of that, and she immediately voiced that on
01:57the set.
01:58I took that to heart.
01:59But when I talk about respect, I also mean about empowering women more.
02:04A lot of movies are shot with the male point of view.
02:07The director might be a man, the cameraman might be a man, and here I am, the editor,
02:12also a dude.
02:13So there's a lot of opportunity to overlook the woman's point of view.
02:17They tend to be objectified.
02:18So usually I try to cut a sex scene with the woman being an equal partner in a consensual
02:25situation.
02:26I mean, unless the story requires otherwise.
02:29And what does that mean?
02:30That means equal screen time of private parts, not lingering on female body parts.
02:37Number five, sex is an emotion.
02:39The audience gets emotionally involved when it's happening in their head.
02:43So try to create the sexual tension inside the mind of the viewer, and not necessarily
02:48on the screen.
02:49What does that mean?
02:50Hint, and let the audience fill in the blanks.
02:58So now in terms of this film, Mark's character, as you might know, has been recently released
03:02from prison.
03:03So he hasn't been with a woman for five years.
03:06The evening starts with him showing up to a welcome party, reconnecting with some of
03:10his old friends.
03:12Throughout that evening, he already is thinking about his ex-girlfriend.
03:15Then when his best buddy meets up with him outside, they start talking about it.
03:19He starts reciting a poem, to which his buddy responds, by the way, we have some strippers
03:23waiting for you.
03:24So now the scene starts with basically a stripper putting her ass in front of his face, and
03:29then going all the way.
03:30I thought, let's use that scene to add the layer to it that he remembers how he had sex
03:35with his ex-girlfriend, and give it a deeper meaning.
03:38I'm going to show you a little bit of that scene.
03:41I'm not going to show everything.
03:43You're going to have to see the movie for that.
03:45As sad as your hope, as sad as your faith, as sad as your quotes, and as sad as this
03:50space.
03:51Hmm.
03:52You know, they probably didn't tell you, but Justin got strippers coming, like right now.
04:41Ultimately, the effect that I'm going for is that his orgasm with his girlfriend will
04:45be magnified by intercutting the visuals with the stripper.
04:53I guess coming from Europe, I have a more relaxed sensibility towards that topic, and
04:58I do see it as my mission to bring that point of view onto every film that I work on.
