00:31And senior Jermaine Mays vowed a comeback from an injury.

00:41For decades, the green bridge connecting Muck City to the rest of Palm Beach County was a symbol, a legend.
00:48Any visiting high school knew that once they crossed that bridge, they were entering the lion's den.
00:55The notorious realm of two of the fiercest rivals in high school football, Pahokee and Glade Central.
01:02Once you cross the bridge, the next stop is Belle Glade.
01:05And just the word Belle Glade is intimidating.
01:07We in Palm Beach, you hear Belle Glade.
01:09They're like, oh.
01:11But times have clearly changed.
01:13And that ratchets up the pressure to win.
01:16We had a stand in the Muck, man.
01:19Nothing crossed the green bridge beat us.
01:22It meant nobody was taking nothing from us.
01:25We're not used to losing to guys across the green bridge.
01:28Because on the Muck, it was always about us beating each other.
01:31And we used to just tear everything up across the bridge.
01:35We built a legacy.
01:36We were respected around the county.
01:38Teens were hesitant about even putting us on their schedule.
01:43Let's just say the competition is part of the Pahokee.
01:45That's just how it is.
01:53For the past few years, teachers and administrators at Pahokee High
01:57have been on a crusade to elevate academic achievement
02:00to a level that rivals the school's performance on the football field
02:05by strengthening programs in math and science
02:08and introducing cool new activities like a robotics club.
02:15So when it came time to hire a new football coach,
02:18Principal Dewayne Denard needed someone who supported his vision for the school,
02:22a special vision shared by native son DJ Bolden.
02:27Come to work early to get a head start.
02:29Well, I hired Coach Bolden based on my vision for all the students.
02:33He came in, he did a very good interview,
02:36detailed interview of the vision that I want for my students.
02:39In addition to heading up the football team,
02:41Coach Bolden pulls double duty,
02:43teaching history at the adjoining middle school.
02:46Then and only then will you flirt.
02:48I do the academic part. I'm very good at it.
02:51And then I do the football part, and I'm very good at that.
02:54The mindset that I have, that drove me to success.
02:57But obviously after you live life, you realize football isn't everything.
03:02It's just an opportunity for something greater.
03:05Principal Denard always talking about changing the culture
03:08as far as everything around it.
03:10He's reforming the school, he's reforming the players and the coaches.
03:14He brought us here to make a change, you know, to push these athletes.
03:19There's no reason we shouldn't light up the school board.
03:23Last week, Pahokee's new vision was put to the test
03:27in the beatdown the Blue Devils received at the hands of Palm Beach Lakes.
03:32How can we refocus, see light at the end of the tunnel
03:35so they can stay motivated and play the game of football.
03:39This is the first practice coming back from, you know, a very horrible loss.
03:44We have been beating Palm Beach Lakes since 96.
03:48Like, it's been a long time.
03:51The game last week with Palm Beach Lakes was like,
03:55basically we beat ourselves.
03:5728 is up, first half. That's all you need to know.
04:01Principal Denard wants the players to know they stand at a crossroads,
04:06but that they still have the power to live up to the expectations
04:10set by the Blue Devil teams that have come before them.
04:14Your season is not lost unless you allow your season to be lost.

08:03will help the young athletes shape up

08:17poor offensive showing this season,
08:19have put Coach Berry,
08:21the Glade Central grad,
08:23on the hot seat in Pahokee.
08:25In times like these,
08:27Coach Berry relies on his faith
08:29to help him stay on course.
08:31I'm a firm believer
08:33of faith, family, football.
08:35And if you have your faith in God,
08:37nothing else really matters,
08:39you know,
08:41because he's gonna take care of you.
08:43Berry also relies on the counsel
08:45of another Muck City legend,
08:47his father,
08:49Bishop Kenny Berry.
08:51Kenny was a star cornerback for Pahokee,
08:53which earned him a scholarship
08:55to the University of Miami
08:57and a stint in the NFL.
08:59Now, Bishop Berry ministers
09:01to his congregation
09:03at Grace Fellowship
09:05in the heart of Muck City,
09:07blending his love of faith
09:09and family with his passion
09:11for football.
09:13A coach himself has to keep
09:15himself, what, motivated,
09:17just as God has given us players.
09:19And basically what you try to do,
09:21just like a football team
09:23trying to get their kids
09:25to carry out a play,
09:27our family, we try to get them
09:29to carry out a play.
09:32We're a small rural community.
09:35You go down to Pahokee,
09:37there's not even a Burger King
09:39or a McDonald's or a Wendy's
09:41or a Checkers.
09:44People need to see
09:46the disadvantage
09:48that these communities,
09:50you know, have compared
09:52to other communities.
09:54But still being able to go out
09:56and be productive and still
09:58putting guys in the NFL,
09:59you know, sending guys
10:01off to college.
10:03I remember I got my first offer
10:05and it was just like,
10:07phew.
10:09Because when you play in,
10:11you know, you're kind of scared
10:13that, well, maybe I'm not good enough.
10:15And when that first one came in,
10:17I had tears in my eyes
10:19because I don't care if no other
10:21ones come in, we got this one.
10:23Every player a college takes
10:25is an investment,
10:27both of coaching time,
10:29and a place to scholarship spot
10:31on a player who's going to flame out.
10:33They check with teachers,
10:35principals, coaches.
10:37They want to make sure that the player
10:39that they're taking as a scholarship player
10:41is a player who's going to succeed
10:43in their team and at the school.
10:45One of Pahokee's most promising
10:47Division I prospects
10:49is Delonis Kabir,
10:51who goes by the nickname Scooter.
10:53He's a massive two-way tackle
10:55with great speed.
10:57But when he was born,
10:59it was in his mother's hand.
11:01If I tell people I was a premature baby
11:03and how small I was,
11:05they won't believe it because,
11:07like, I'm real big now.
11:09Scooter, he's a big, mild-mannered kid.
11:11He's a nice kid.
11:13You're not going to find a nicer young man.
11:15Scooter was like your typical church boy.
11:17He goes to church,
11:19he plays in the band at the school.
11:21But if you've ever seen Scooter,
11:23he's, what, 6'4", 6'5",
11:25330-pound kid beating the drums.
11:27Like, no, we need a lineman.
11:29For Scooter,
11:31football is oftentimes a blessing
11:33and a curse.
11:35I'm always doing something
11:37dealing with football.
11:39Like, I miss out on, like,
11:41fun stuff that the family's doing
11:43because I have to do football practice.
11:45Everyone was just pushing him
11:47to play football because of his size.
11:49Like, he had great size.
11:51And football is not Scooter's first love,
11:53but it's something that he grew to love.
11:55He's seen an outlet through this.
11:57He's been able to go to college
11:59and have his school paid for
12:01by playing a game
12:03that he's fallen in love with.
12:06This came from N.C. State.
12:08It just tells me
12:10that they want to see me this summer,
12:12get me up this summer.
12:14And then this one's from Wake Forest.
12:16It tells me that I'm a pretty good player.
12:19I play the game the way
12:21my position should be played.
12:23That's from the coach.
12:25He was like,
12:27University of Central Florida.
12:29See, it's got my jersey number.
12:31This was just saying
12:33that they enjoy having me up for camp
12:35and hope I had a good time at the school.
12:38There's just a few.
12:40The rest of my room will move on.
12:42With all this attention
12:44comes the anticipation
12:46that Scooter will soon make
12:48the biggest decision of his life so far.
12:50Where to play college ball.
12:52It's a decision
12:54with life-changing consequences
12:55for many college football prospects.
12:57It's now home to a unique organization
12:59dedicated to securing scholarships
13:01for that area's standout players.
13:03Another step
13:05on the road to turning today's students
13:07into tomorrow's legends.
13:09Today we're in Belle Glade.
13:11It's the grand opening
13:13of the Student ACES Center,
13:15which we call the SAC.
13:17A center for the young men and women
13:19in our program to congregate,
13:21come to this facility,
13:23be able to learn life skills,
13:25and achieve their dreams.
13:27Today will mark the beginning
13:29of a childhood dream.
13:31And it is through this program
13:33and this building
13:35that not only the student-athletes
13:37in the Glades area,
13:39but the youth in this community
13:41will be equipped with knowledge
13:43and the resources needed
13:45to reach their dreams.
13:47Katie Fletcher
13:49is a former scholar-athlete
13:51from Glades Central
13:53who is now paving the way
13:55for other young men and women
13:57and so do their scholarship offers.
13:59She's like a mentor.
14:01She really want to help these guys out.
14:03All she wants to see
14:05is see them be successful.

14:27she's built that rapport with them

14:33what we have to do
14:35in order to get you
14:36to this next level.
14:38This center is the first of its kind
14:40in actually the entire U.S.
14:42So this building is going to be
14:44one of those things
14:46that teach them not just football,
14:48but every other sport.
14:50Just what do they need,
14:52the requirements that are needed
14:53to get them to the next level.
14:55We know that every kid
14:57is not going to be an NFL player.
14:59We understand that.
15:01But we're also going to prepare
15:03them for life after athletics
15:05and be able to grasp
15:07those opportunities.
15:09This week,
15:11Pahokee's coach Bolden
15:13knows the entire community
15:15expects him to field a team
15:17that is focused and prepared
15:19to win.
15:21But focus has been hard
15:23for him to cope
15:25with being the starting QB
15:27for his former arch rival.
15:29He also just learned before
15:31his poor performance
15:33at Palm Beach Lakes
15:35that his father,
15:37Max Senior,
15:39an ex-con known in the muck
15:41as Little Mac,
15:43had just been arrested again.
15:45The day I seen him,
15:47it was uptown.
15:49The police came over there
15:51and tried to get somebody
15:53and he was in the middle
15:55of something,
15:57a judge's name or something.
15:59I can't pretty much tell him
16:01to stay out of the streets.
16:03That's his life he chose.
16:05But it wasn't just Mac
16:07who struggled to stay focused
16:09in Pahokee's last game.
16:11With the team's next challenge
16:13only days away,
16:15coach Bolden and company
16:17are growing impatient
16:19with the lack of effort
16:21and the surplus of idle chatter
16:23on TV.

17:25taking down Cocoa
17:27would be an historic accomplishment
17:29and possibly attract the attention
17:31from college scouts,
17:33all the more reason Jermaine is anxious
17:35for his recent knee injury to heal.
17:37But a lack of financial resources
17:39to pay for his treatment
17:41and a fear of missing
17:43the rest of the season
17:45have Jermaine unsure of what to do,
17:47which leads him to the SAC offices
17:49and his new guardian angel,

20:23because this has been one of the seasons
20:25where he has had one of the best seasons

35:21A lot of decisions that Mac made
35:23just wasn't focused.
35:25And that lack of focus,
35:27I believe,
35:29came from his father
35:31not being present.
35:33Mac Williams is a junior,
35:35which means he has the rest
35:37of this season and the next year
35:39ahead of him.
35:45For seniors like Scooter Kabir,
35:47looking ahead to next year
35:49means lining up all his priorities
35:51into one life-changing decision.

35:55obviously I want to study criminal justice,
35:57so the type of program they have
35:59at the school,
36:01the distance away from home probably,
36:03my family's availability to get to me
36:05when they need to or when they can.
36:07With lots of high school football
36:09left to play,
36:11Scooter is now ready to declare
36:13which scholarship offer
36:15delivers all that.
36:17I decided to commit to the
36:19University of Central Florida
36:21because they have a great program
36:23for what I want to study,
36:25criminal justice.
36:27With all of our kids,
36:29as long as they're making
36:31their decisions and they're making it
36:33for the right reasons,
36:34that's a positive matter.
36:36And then going to college and actually
36:38graduating with my college degree.
