00:00When it comes to health and beauty products, few are commonly used as petroleum jelly,
00:04often referred to by the brand name Vaseline. Petroleum jelly has been around since the 1850s.
00:10It's made from mineral oils and waxes. It's refined from crude oil, resulting in a semi-solid
00:16mixture of liquid and solid components. Its pure form is safe for most people,
00:20even those with allergies, says USA Today. Commonly used for skin care, petroleum jelly
00:26treats dry lips, heels, and cracked hands, protects against irritants, and aids in wound
00:31healing. It's also used to prevent diaper rash and treat eczema in children, notes Dr. Alika
00:37Huss from the Mayo Clinic. Despite its many benefits, petroleum jelly should not be overused
00:42in certain situations. Dr. Deborah Jelliman from Mount Sinai School of Medicine warns against using
00:48it with condoms on deep wounds or acne-prone skin. Additionally, it should not be applied to fresh
00:54burns or too far up the nostrils due to potential health risks.
