00:23The nonprofit Good Energy recently teamed up
00:25with Colby College's Buck Lab for Climate and Environment
00:28to release the climate reality check
00:30as a tool to measure the representation
00:32of climate change on screen.
00:34The study was inspired by the popular Bechdel-Wallace test,
00:37which measures the representation of women in TV and film.
00:40The climate reality check is pretty straightforward.
00:42It asks whether one, climate change exists in the project
00:46and two, if a character knows it.
00:48THR took a look at the data
00:50zeroing in on blockbusters from 2018 to 2022.
00:54How did the highest grossing film in the MCU fare?
00:57Avengers Endgame did not pass.
01:00It's a billion to one cosmic fluke.
01:02Actually, most of the Marvel films
01:03did not pass the climate test.
01:05But over at DC, Aquaman did pass the climate reality check.
01:10Jason Momoa would be proud.
01:11Two back-to-back Tom Cruise blockbusters,
01:14Top Gun Maverick and Mission Impossible Fallout,
01:17both did not pass.
01:19Jurassic World Dominion did pass.
01:22Venom, starring Tom Hardy, also passed.
01:24Jumanji The Next Level did not pass.
01:28But another Dwayne Johnson flick,
01:30Fast and Furious Presents Hobbs and Shaw, did pass.
01:33The Batman, interestingly, has passed,
01:36meeting just one of the elements.
01:38From the study's full data pool of 250 films,
01:41only 9.6 passed the climate reality check.
01:44However, climate inclusion is becoming more common,
01:47with climate present in twice as many films
01:49released during more recent years.
01:51Also, the study noted stories that include climate change
01:54are profitable, with films that had at least one character
01:57aware of climate change performing 10% better
02:00at the box office than those that did not.
