00:00In his first visit to neighboring Ukraine since Russia's invasion, Hungary's Viktor Orban
00:06recommended an immediate ceasefire.
00:11With just a couple of weeks until the vote on the EU's most powerful jobs, questions
00:15are being raised about whether Italy will be isolated.
00:22Roughly seven tons of waste was removed from Hungary's Lake Tisza.
00:44The Lord Emir Zelensky has said that Ukraine's relationship with Hungary will be completely
00:49different after the Prime Minister Viktor Orban made his first visit since Russia's
00:53full-scale invasion.
01:09Orban is widely seen as having the best relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin among
01:15European leaders and has routinely blocked EU efforts to extend assistance to Ukraine.
01:23On Tuesday, he told Zelensky that the war was Europe's most important issue and recommended
01:28an immediate ceasefire.
01:32The meeting has been attracting reaction from Europe and beyond with the U.S. ambassador
01:36to Hungary saying it's a positive sign of progress between the two countries.
01:41The United States recognizes that Prime Minister Orban has traveled to Kyiv. We think that
01:47is a positive sign of progress and we look forward to learning more about the discussions
01:52as they unfold.
01:55Orban's visit came just one day after Hungary took over the six-month rotating presidency
02:00of the EU, a position that has little real power but can be used to set the tone of the
02:06bloc's agenda.
02:12At least 116 people have been killed and dozens injured after a stampede at a religious gathering
02:20of thousands in northern India.
02:27According to local media, the crush happened when attendees rushed to leave a makeshift
02:32tent following an event with a Hindu leader.
02:37Initial reports suggested over 15,000 people arrived for the event, which only had permission
02:43to host about 5,000.
02:48The new prime minister wasn't on the ballot and the four leaders who were will remain
02:53in parliament. On the street, their swearing-in is met by ambivalence.
03:07Others, like this Syrian immigrant, are worried about Geert Wilders' anti-Islamic rhetoric.
03:15Polling shows that 42% of the Dutch have faith in the government, up from 29% two years ago.
03:23I see that the people are afraid from their decisions, so invaded needs, I hope everything
03:30will be OK.
03:32Polling shows that 42% of the Dutch have faith in the government, up from 29% two years ago.
03:38People are excited that there is a cabinet after 221 days of negotiations. At the same
03:43time there is a little bit of uncertainty around this cabinet because the cabinet is
03:47based on a six-pager of framework. This framework has to over the summer be developed and only
03:55then we will actually know what these ministers will do in terms of policies for the Netherlands
03:59in the upcoming four years.
04:01There are concerns how long this government will remain in power with an apolitical leader
04:06seen as beholden to Wilders and three parties who are joining government for the first time.
04:11The new government will present its full plans and budget in September.
04:17There are high hopes for this government, especially from supporters of Geert Wilders
04:20Party for Freedom and the Farmer Citizens Movement. Trust in government among the working
04:25class from which most of their supporters come has actually doubled. However, those
04:30people are going to want to see some of those promises become reality. For example, these
04:34four parties have promised that they will enforce the strictest migration policy ever,
04:38but in order for that to work they will have to go to Brussels to renegotiate. And whether
04:43an opt-out will be on the table, that remains to be seen.
04:47This is Fionnuala Van Tetz reporting for Euronews, Amsterdam.
04:53France's far-right leader Marine Le Pen said the national rally will only take the helm
04:57of government if they win an absolute majority. Prime Minister candidate Jordan Bardella and
05:02his far-right party were strengthened by success in the first round of voting in the French
05:07legislative elections last weekend, with the final deciding vote being cast this Sunday.
05:12It's obvious that we can't accept going to government if we can't act. What our voters
05:20ask us to do is to change the policy that is being pursued. If we can't change it, and
05:25if we accept going to government only to sit in a minister's chair but not to be able
05:33to act, that would be, I think, the worst betrayal that we could do to our voters.
05:40French President Emmanuel Macron's centrist party and a hastily united left-wing coalition
05:45are manoeuvring to prevent the far-right national rally from taking power in the country's parliament.
05:52Despite the alliance against the far-right, Bardella could profit from public resentment
05:56towards Macron.
05:58His lack of experience and even competence should be a deterrent for voters. There seems
06:05to be such a huge detestation of Emmanuel Macron and his politics right now that voters
06:11think there is a chance to change that, to really shake the system. And people who are
06:17disaffected by current politics, that they were done, think, well, we've not tried this.
06:24Candidates faced a deadline to register for the second round of high-stakes snap legislative
06:29elections or withdraw. If united, they might yet block the national rally's path to power
06:35this weekend.
06:40With about 10,000 athletes parading on more than 90 boats along Paris' six-kilometre river
06:46Seine, French river police have been training on the city's river ahead of the Olympic Games
06:51opening ceremony later this month. About 220,000 invited spectators are expected to fill the
06:58upper tiers of the river's banks and another 100,000 paying spectators will watch from
07:04the lower riverside around the Trocadero Plaza. A large police operation is planned for the
07:10event.
07:29Paris' police chief plans to deploy around 30,000 police officers every day. This will
07:36rise to 45,000 for the opening ceremony on the river Seine. The event is expected to
07:42transform Paris and its iconic landmarks into a giant city.
07:59Maxim's Ringo and Janice Lox became the first Latvian same-sex couple to register their
08:05partnership on Monday, shortly after midnight when a new law came into force. Now, all
08:11partnerships will be able to register their relationship under it.
08:29The Latvian parliament voted last November to formally legislate same-sex civil unions.
08:37After 46 same-sex couples successfully challenged courts to get recognized as a family unit
08:43in the eyes of the law.
08:58A partnership will be registered if the persons are not married, are not close relatives in
09:09the direct line, are not brothers, sisters, half-brothers and half-sisters and have not
09:14registered another partnership.
09:17More than seven tonnes of plastic waste has been collected from Hungary's Lake Tisza as
09:23part of a historic clean-up competition. The teams, called Pet Pirates, sailed on the artificial
09:30lake's high seas with kayaks and makeshift boats to gather the waste. The more plastic
09:35they accumulated, the closer they inched to winning the Pet Cup.
09:47While the collected waste is sorted by colour and material, volunteers are always amazed
10:01by the kind of trash they find.
10:03The Pet Cup started in 2013 with the aim of ridding Hungary's most magnificent natural
10:21wonders of garbage. Pet Pirates will captain clean-up operations at the polluted Bodrog
10:27floodplain in August.
10:34The Euro 2024 round of 16 is finally complete and Turkey are the last team to book a ticket
10:42for the final eight. Merih Demiral sent the Turks into the quarter-finals thanks to a
10:49brace that knocked Austria out 2-1. Austria nearly found the equalizer in the second half
10:57but a stunning save by Mert Gunok kept the Turks on top.
11:02Turkey will now be facing the Netherlands on Saturday after the Dutch defeated Romania
11:083-0. The Orange team pulled off their best performance in the tournament so far.
11:15Kody Gakpo found the net again to become the Euro 2024 joint top scorer, before Daniel
11:24Malen scored twice to seal a blistering display.
11:29The next round will kick off on Friday with Spain, Germany and France-Portugal, followed
11:35by Netherlands-Turkey and Switzerland-England on Saturday.
