Barnsley FC player-coach Conor Hourihane discusses how he intends to combine his playing and coaching roles after returning to the club ahead of the 2024-25 League One season
Transcript
00:00Yeah, I think it's going to be challenging. I'm training at the minute for the first few
00:11weeks to get a base of fitness. But as pre-season goes on, I get to know more players, I'll
00:17be getting involved in coaching a bit more. I'm in on all the coaching meetings. People
00:22are coming to me for a little bit of advice. I'm watching them, how they organise sessions.
00:27So I think it's just kind of absorbing and taking it all in for now. But helping as much
00:32as I can as well, on top of keeping fit. It's challenging, but it's something that I'm really
00:36enjoying. Like I said, the opportunity is great, so I'm just keen to get my teeth stuck
00:42into it really.
00:43You're obviously in a different phase of your career than when you were here last time,
00:47so early to mid-twenties. Maybe a different role on the pitch, you're obviously not playing
00:52quite as much as last time.
00:53Yes, I mentioned that in the last interview. I think people need to realise a little bit
00:59that the young, energetic Captain Conor Owen, where we made all the memories together, is
01:05something that's in the past a little bit. It's going to be a lot different this time.
01:08A lot different in a nice way as well. The opportunity is there to make new memories
01:13in different ways. How much I'll play throughout the course of the season, who knows? But I
01:19can still have a big influence on people around the club, with the players, working
01:23with the players individually, improving them, challenging them, improving their performance
01:27levels. So I think it will be a lot different this time, but one I'm really looking forward to.
