On this week’s podcast, The YP’s football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to discuss the current form of Barnsley in League One and how genuine a play-off contender they might be – as well as the form of Kelechi Nwakali in the game against Cambridge United.

They also cast an eye over Doncaster Rovers’ home form in League Two and whether it is a cause for concern, as well as what needs to change at Bradford City – if anything – in order to turn around their run of four games without a win.

The panel also look at the standout games of the weekend ahead as teams return to action from the latest international break.

01:04this week we're joined by Chief Football Writer for the Yorkshire Post, Stuart Rayner,
01:07and Football Writer for the Yorkshire Post, Leon Wobbshaw. Good morning, guys.
01:10Morning.
01:10Hello.
01:11Morning. Right, this week saw the third international break of the season. However,
01:16we do still have league action to look back on, as well as forward to,
01:21now that the international break is over. I wanted to start this week's episode by
01:26discussing Barnsley's improved form. They've claimed 11 points from the last five games,
01:32which has put them in a really good position in terms of the league table. What have you
01:38made of their recent turn in fortunes, and can we see them sort of maintain this, Leon?
01:44Well, yeah, I mean, that's the great acid test we'll have to wait and see
01:48this period of the year we're going into now. The games come thick and fast as the Christmas
01:53and the New Year schedule. Yeah, it's a critical time for a lot of teams, isn't it? I think it's
01:58a time of the season when league tables really do start to sort of have a bit of a bearing and
02:07take shape. But they've done well, Barnsley, considering where they were. I did the double
02:13header against Huddersfield at the start of October, and it was difficult to see where the
02:21sort of season was going. I thought they lacked a bit of identity on the pitch. They brought quite
02:29a few new signings in, but they were still in the process of assimilating them. The other one or two
02:36questions being asked of Darrell Clark, and he's done what all good managers do. He's knuckled
02:44down. He's got to work on the training ground. The devil's in the detail, and he's really focused on
02:53some key areas of the team. We've mentioned it long and hard about the sort of issues that they
03:01had with the midfield in the first part of the autumn. They lacked a bit of chemistry there,
03:07and it's difficult to really see what they were trying to do in terms of the way they were going
03:14to play. They've addressed that. John Russell's moved into a number eight role. Luca Connell
03:21was actually suspended on Saturday, but he's been operating as the sixth. That balance looks better.
03:28They've decided upon Georgie Gent as the left wing back and brought in Corey O'Keefe on the
03:35right, and Barry Corsoff to have a few bench splinters of late. That seems to have worked.
03:42They made a changing goal. They brought Ben Killip in, and I think as well, you did mention it quite
03:52a few times, Daryl Clarke just saying that Keela Dunne arrived right at the end of the window,
03:58along with Stephen Humphries as well. To be fair to Humphries, he was really playing catch.
04:03Keela Dunne had been playing for Mansfield. Humphries had been a bit of a way off it,
04:08looked a bit rusty. He was saying, look, give him time. He needs to build the partnerships,
04:13fitness and the connections. There's still a lot more that needs to be done for Barnsley,
04:18but the connections are growing and they're looking okay. I think the main deficiency
04:26in terms of the season so far has been home form, but they played very well against Rotherham last
04:31time out. An excellent performance and win. Opportunity does not for them in terms of
04:37the run to the end of the year. They've got back-to-back home games to play
04:41Wigan on Saturday, and then they've got Reading on the Tuesday. They've got four out of six at
04:47home, so if they can get a few wins there, that side of the season can be improved. They can put
04:56this talk about home form back in the box, so to speak. They're looking okay. I did the game on
05:04Saturday at Cambridge. They drew, but they really should have won. They totally dominated the second
05:11half, created a lot of chances, but they just couldn't put any of them away. A bit of a combination
05:18of the Cambridge keeper made one or two decent saves and some poor misses as well. I was impressed
05:25because I thought Cambridge were pretty good in the first half. In fairness to them, they've got a
05:29few players out and they made it a real fight. The press bars did pretty well in the first half and
05:36made it a bit of a scrap. They posed problems in the air as well. It was a good game,
05:43but fair play to Barnsley. They took over and they played it on their terms
05:48in the second half. Pretty good performance, eight or nine times out of ten that game gets played
05:54again. They would have won, but I think they're in a decent place. Fair play to Clark and his
06:04and his coaching staff. A few questions were asked. Supporters were wondering what
06:13Clark's ethos in football was all about. What's he going to do to change things around?
06:19It has done in fairness. I think the next period, we'll probably know a lot more about them in a
06:25month's time because of this run of home games. As Leon says, there's been this question mark
06:30about them. It's maybe coming at a good time when it builds a bit of confidence. As Leon says,
06:36that performance against Rotherham was really encouraging in that regard. In terms of Barnsley
06:44generally, I think it's just reminded us of a lot of things that we know anyway, but you do need
06:49reminding of from time to time. When a new manager comes in, it takes time. When players come in,
06:56it takes time to adapt. I think we've seen new managers sacked earlier in the season
07:05than this by clubs in the past. It just shows you sometimes you just need to show a bit of
07:11patience. From Clark's perspective, there's lots of talk nowadays about philosophies and
07:19all of this sort of thing, but you do have to be a bit flexible too. Clark's shown that. He's
07:24changed his mind over his goalkeeper. He's changed his mind over how he's used certain
07:29players over formations and that sort of thing. That's a real positive that he's not
07:34been completely set in his ways. He's been prepared to assess the squad. I can only assume
07:40that the likes of Russell have won their places through their performances in training. I've
07:47really taken a good look at this group of players and just worked out how they best fit together.
07:51Hopefully, come the end of the season, we'll be looking back at this block of matches and saying
07:56this was the time when it really came together. But I say we'll have to wait and see because if
08:03those home difficulties re-emerge, it won't be back to square one, but it'll certainly be
08:10a step back. My hope is that they've now got the confidence and the better understanding as a team
08:16that they can really attack these games in a way they possibly couldn't in September, October.
08:22It's just hoping they don't waste everything good about their other performances, isn't it?
08:28It wasn't just a good performance, it was a bit of a statement, wasn't it? There was
08:33a big crowd, 14,000, 15,000. In terms of public relation value, it looked good, didn't it?
08:40Yeah.
08:40They've definitely been... Everyone connected with Barnsley, not least Clarke, have been
08:46wanting that, haven't they? Obviously, the first game against Mansfield, similar crowd, but
08:52a bit of a disappointment in not getting over the line. Stuart's right to mention about the
08:57home fob. They've got some juicy games coming up. They've got the two games on the immediate
09:04horizon, but you look, they've got Birmingham on the 7th of December, a little bit further down
09:10the line, they've got Wrexham on New Year's Day. Two big fixtures in the context of the season and
09:18if the Barnsley public are looking to, if they maybe sort of wanted to have reneged a little
09:24bit and say, well, I'll see how they go before I go back and have a look at them. Those are the
09:31sorts of games, along with the Rotherham game, that can win people back and win those who are
09:37sort of floating a little bit back. So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see how they go in that regard
09:45and you just hope that they don't waste all the good work and the good occasion that was on show
09:52against Rotherham because they're in, after a difficult sort of mid-autumn, they look like
09:58they're heading towards a better place again. And sticking with Barnsley for a minute, I just
10:03wanted to discuss the performance that Kelechi Wakali put up against Cambridge United in particular.
10:09What did you make of it and how do you think that the Tykes can use his abilities to their advantage, Leon?
10:16He was excellent. I mean, he was thrown into the fray pretty early. Matt Swatts
10:22came off with an injury issue after eight minutes, I suppose.
10:29Although if Clark had been a bit more pragmatic and safe, he might have just
10:33brought on Matthew Craig, to be honest, and he's obviously played a fair bit at
10:38league level this season. But no, he brought on Wakali and he sat in the
10:45six roles straight away and he was excellent. I mean, a lot's been made of him
10:52coming in and building up his fitness. He's come from Portuguese football. His CV at the
10:57start of his career is a very strong one. He's on the books of Arsenal. He's represented Nigeria
11:04as a full international and you don't do that unless you've got something
11:09about you. But yeah, I think Barnsley fans, probably Clark as well, were just desperate to see him
11:17in competitive action and league level and see what he was all about.
11:23I think it was good in the respect that the pitch wasn't the best on Saturday. It was a bit bobbly
11:28and dry. And as I mentioned, Cambridge, I thought they were good in the first half.
11:32They set about Barnsley, didn't let them settle, got in the faces. So it was, on that side of it,
11:38it was probably quite a tough game maybe to come into for Nuwakarli. But fair pledge, he settled
11:45pretty quickly. What I liked about him, his range of passing was excellent.
11:49He was decisioning when to knock it short, when to knock it a bit longer. He looked like he's got
11:56some good vision. He can see a pass. His close control is good. And yeah, he looked like he'd
12:02been playing there for a fair while and he just adds another option to Clark in a fairly strong
12:11area of the pitch. Luca Connell comes back from suspension on Saturday for the weekend game.
12:17You'd expect him probably to come straight back into the side. But going forward, he's an
12:24intriguing option, Nuwakarli. And I think with the run of home games as well, I would like to think
12:31that Clark would like to fit him in and have a look at him sooner rather than later in some of
12:38these home games. But yeah, one swallow doesn't make a summer. But like I've explained, I think
12:45the fact that the pitch was poor and he was sort of thrown in a little bit really, he probably
12:51wasn't expected to come on. He wasn't caught cold at all and he looked a talent and he certainly
13:00whet the appetite. For me, he was the best outfield player for Barnsley on the day,
13:06probably closely followed by Stephen Humphreys. But you have to say it was his first meaningful
13:12league appearance. I thought he was excellent, but it's only a start, isn't it? But yeah,
13:20I was encouraged definitely. Yeah, I mean, Barnsley look like they've done things the right
13:26way with this one. As Leon said, played with a lot of promise when he started out. He's 26 now,
13:34but sometimes you can pick up those players who it just hasn't quite clicked for them,
13:38but you know the talent's there. You need to show them a bit of patience, a bit of love.
13:43They've dipped him into a couple of the trophy games. I think Leon and I have both seen him in
13:47a trophy game. He's shown little glimpses there and just built him up to this point. And obviously,
13:54you can't have too many of those signings because as I say, they do require a lot of patience. But
13:59sometimes you can pick up a real gem who's just not found his feet yet as a professional
14:06footballer. Sometimes you get too caught up with dates of birth and that sort of thing,
14:13and you can write people off when actually there's something there if you just work with
14:18it with the right management. So as Leon says, he's not cracked it yet. It's only one game,
14:24but I think it's a good indication of how clubs with Barnsley's resources need to operate smartly
14:34in the transfer market. So hopefully come the end of the season, we'll be chalking this one
14:38down as a success. Yeah, he looks like he's something to contribute going forward. He'll
14:44be particularly useful. Sometimes when you get these tight games, he needs someone to come on
14:48and unlock the door, whether that's a free-kick cross or whatever. He looks the sort of player
14:56who's got that in his armoury. We've touched on some of the teams that are playing for Barnsley
15:03going forward, so maybe he'll come into the thinking there a little bit, whether it's
15:08potentially from the bench or otherwise. Yeah, I mean, as you say, Leon, you just look at the
15:12clubs he started at. You don't get into those academies and play for those clubs if you haven't
15:17got a bit of talent. It's just about making the use of it, isn't it? Yeah. And now we turn to
15:23Doncaster Rovers, whose home form has unfortunately been stuttering as of late, with their last win
15:28at home coming on the 1st of October when they welcomed Barrow. Donnie, they aren't in a bad
15:34position at the moment, as they're currently third in the table. However, if they want to
15:39maintain this position or improve it, then surely they have to start getting those home wins on the
15:45board. What has to change to bring those victories back to the Eco Power Stadium, Stuart?
15:52Well, I think, you know, first and foremost, they need to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal.
15:59I mean, you know, they tended... I think we're looking back to the opening day of the season
16:07since they've scored more than one at home in the league, so that's clearly a big part of it. But
16:15I think, you know, it's one of those, you can't ignore it, you can't brush it under the carpet,
16:22and Grant McCann certainly won't. But equally, there's no need to panic. You know, as you say,
16:27they're in a good league position, they're doing a lot of things right. And like Barnsley,
16:33kind of the other way around, the fixture list isn't too bad for them in that respect. I think
16:39they've only got two home games left in the whole of the year. So they've got the chance to do a bit
16:46like Barnsley, to build up some confidence where they're strongest, you know, in their case,
16:52well in both cases, away from home. And hopefully attack these last couple of games in better
17:02fettle. But yeah, Grant McCann, we know he's a very demanding manager and we know he's got
17:07very high standards. So he's certainly not going to be happy about this, he's certainly not going
17:12to be ignoring it. But as you said in the question, they're in a good position. I think it's
17:20important not to get things out of proportion and not panic too much as well. Yeah, I'd agree with
17:25that. I think if you're going to have this sort of spell in this season, it's not too bad a time
17:32to sort of have it, if that makes sense to some degree. There's a lot of football still to be
17:38played. You look at the forward options that they have got, Doncaster, you know, not just Billy Sharp
17:44and Joe Ironside, they've got other people who can contribute on the scoring front, you know,
17:49the likes of Molyneux and Kyle Hurst and there's others too. I think what's probably being borne
17:56out is how much of a scalp it is for clubs going to Doncaster in terms of getting a result,
18:02you know, not just in terms of teams going there and winning. Obviously, I think Chesfield won
18:08there, didn't they? Yeah, Bromley was a big shock as well. But, you know, even teams going there to
18:13really stop the rhythm and get a point, it's a big result in the season, isn't it, for teams
18:20who go there and can get something? I think it obviously showed in the final third of
18:28last season how much of a fortress and how strong the eco power was for Doncaster. So,
18:35I think they're probably finding a little bit of that out as well. Teams are going there and
18:38they're being ultra-organised and they're getting men behind the ball and they're fighting and
18:44scrapping for everything and that's what's going to happen when you're naming the division and
18:48you've got aspirations to finish in the top three, which Doncaster certainly have.
18:56Teams are going to go there, they're not going to roll over, they're going to try and make life
19:01difficult and it's up to McCann's side to solve the puzzle. But I'm not too unduly alarmed.
19:12I sat and grabbed McCann's press call at the end of last week and it was full of praise for the
19:17performance against Notts County in the second half and they were losing in the first half.
19:23They were very strong by all accounts after the break and McCann said he was the best they've
19:28played all season. So, that was encouraging enough stuff from him in that regard. I just think
19:34they're having just that little spell in a season at home. A lot of teams get them a small pocket
19:40of games but it's not quite going for them in terms of goals scored at home and getting the
19:46wins but at this stage I don't think it's too much to worry about. Now, let's turn our focus
19:53to Bradford City who have gone four games without a win in the league, which now sees them just two
19:59points outside the playoff places. It's not a terrible position for the Bantams, however,
20:05if they do want to improve their position and their fortunes, what do you think has to change
20:11in order for them to do so, Leon? It's funny with Bradford because it seems to be that often
20:19at this time of the year as well they always seem to have these little spells, don't they,
20:24where they're not playing terribly but they're just coming out on the wrong side of fine margins and
20:32I suppose it's a bit of a case in point now that I did the trophy game and they were already
20:37qualified in fairness against Rotherham United. It was really to do with who was going to win the
20:43group and have the home game. Rotherham won it but Bradford were, you know, on another night
20:48they'd have easily won that. They hit the post three times, they went behind but it was a pretty
20:54decent response I thought. Just little things, little bits of the rub of the green, injuries
21:00are going against them. They had another potential one with Jack Sheppard on the left of the defence
21:05and they really have been hit in that regard, haven't they, in the autumn on the left with
21:11Kelly's out as well and Richard so they've had disruption certainly in terms of options
21:20in defence. Results haven't always gone for them lately but I don't think they're playing
21:29too bad to be honest. They played pretty well I thought against Rotherham.
21:34They were, by all accounts, they weren't necessarily sparkling against Colchester but
21:41they did enough to do a job on Colchester and gave very little away. They managed to get the
21:47lead through Andy Cutt and, you know, seconds away from seeing it out and getting a good 1-0 win
21:53there. So just little things going against them a little bit at the minute but I see a together
22:01side. The attitude and spirit looks pretty good there. They're fairly well organised. I just think
22:11this may be a result or two away from just getting back on track to be quite honest. I think there's
22:20one issue maybe going forward with Bradford, I don't know what Stuart thinks, it's this,
22:27you know, this second striker sort of chipping in more with a few more goals. They've obviously
22:31got probably the best centre forward in the division in Andy Cook. He looks nailed on to
22:36get 20 goals again for me but it's just a supporting cash. I just worry about have they
22:42got that player who can get eight or nine to chip in or ten. One or two have had a try,
22:49obviously they've had a look at Ollie Sanderson, they've had a look at Verdane Oliver, there's
22:54Kavanagh. I think if there's sort of one issue that's nagging me a little bit, it's just that
23:00sort of second striker in terms of how much can they chip in and help Cook. That's the thing that
23:09I think they might need to address. Yeah, I think it possibly goes even slightly beyond that and
23:15I think there's a danger with Andy Cook that others can sort of leave it to him, can't they?
23:21In the second striker, you know, they need midfielders chipping in.
23:27You're right, you're definitely right, the second striker does need to be making a big
23:31contribution even if it's just assists. I mean, you know, the numbers aren't that great for that
23:37either but if they could just get Alex Paterson fit and in a rhythm of scoring goals for midfield
23:43that would make such a difference. Yeah, there's always a danger when you've got this
23:48optotemic striker that you just leave too much for them. Oh, don't worry about it,
23:54Andy will score the goals, we'll do our job and it just can't work like that because,
23:58you know, heaven forbid if he were to get an injury or something like that. So, I think it's
24:04partly mindset, I think it's partly ability as well to be fair but yeah, it just feels like the
24:11little details are letting them down. I mean, you know, the Colchester goal they conceded,
24:15as Leon said. Graham Alexander, I think, was really happy with the performance for 98 minutes
24:20and then you just have one of these mad corners where the goalkeeper goes up and everything sort
24:25of goes out the window and then there you go, you've got two points. Other night, you know,
24:31three shots an inch or so the other way and then instead of hitting the woodwork,
24:35you know, you've won the game but those are the times, you know, when managers,
24:40you hear some managers, don't you, talking about, oh, I don't look at results, I look at
24:43performances. Well, I guess those are the times when you've got to look at the performances.
24:47You've got to say, actually, we're doing a lot right. We can't be thrown too much by the fact
24:53that these small moments in games are costing us but at the same time, you know, games are
24:59decided by small moments. You need that concentration in the last minute at Colchester, you need that,
25:04you know, real accuracy in the shooting. So, you have to work on these things but,
25:10as Leon says, I think this is another one where you kind of look at the bigger picture which is
25:15sometimes hard to do at a club like Bradford where everything's so, the mood is so dictated
25:20by results but I think you have to, in this instance, I think you have to look at that
25:25and trust in the process and the people doing it that they'll get through this.
25:30I think as well, quickly, one or two more goals from the number eights as well.
25:36Jamie Walker's a very talented footballer, he played well on Tuesday night, Bobby Poynton
25:40as well, he's not a kid anymore. You'd hope that they could start chipping in one or two more as
25:44well, that'd sort of help in that regard as well going forward, I think. Yeah, I mean, I'd let Sam
25:51Walker off but pretty much everyone else should be looking at how they can contribute a bit more.
25:57Yeah, absolutely. And finally for this week, let's take a quick look at the upcoming weekend games
26:03which include huge fixtures for both Hull City who face struggling Luton Town and Rotherham United
26:11who meet Yorkshire rivals Bradford City. What do you think of those two fixtures and what other
26:19fixtures sort of leap out to you from this weekend's games, Stuart?
26:27Well, I think, yeah, for a few weeks now it felt like Hull was heading in the wrong direction and
26:33this international break might be the dangerous point for them. The fact that they're playing
26:38Luton who've had their own big troubles this season, you're right, that's clearly going to be
26:46a really big one for them. Chipping Wednesday, it's been a season-long search really to just
27:00find a bit of form, a bit of consistency. So, any game for them is big at the moment. The fact
27:05that they're at home to Cardiff, that's an important one. I think Huddersfield went into
27:10the break in good shape. They need to maintain that momentum when they come out at home to
27:16Charlton. But it's getting to that stage of the season where, as Leon alluded to at the start,
27:23the league table is starting to take shape now. This is the time of the season with all the games
27:29coming up in December and January in particular. You want to be going into it in good rhythm and
27:34good confidence. So, most of these teams, obviously we've talked about a couple that have played,
27:39but most of these teams have had a couple of weeks to work on those little things that need
27:44ironing out, to have a bit of rest and recuperation, to just regather their thoughts a bit.
27:49So, I think we want to see two teams coming out and just showing that that work's not
27:55being wasted and they've spent the time well really.
27:59Yeah, I think Stuart's right to pick out the Sheffield Wednesday game. I think I mentioned
28:07it. I had a look at their fixtures. They've got a lot of games where there's points gathering
28:15opportunities. But it's fair to say they've got Cardiff, they've got Hull, they've got Derby,
28:20they've got Preston, Oxford, Stoke. With respect, if they're going to nick anything from the likes
28:28of Sheffield United and Leeds, it's a bonus, isn't it really? The opponents I've mentioned,
28:34they're going to be teams that Sheffield Wednesday gaze themselves against. So,
28:40these sort of bread-and-butter games, if you like, I think they do have importance for a
28:46club like Wednesday in terms of the position they're in. Yeah, Huddersfield against Charlton,
28:52that'll be an interesting and potentially a bit of a feisty fixture. By all accounts,
28:59he was jumping up and down at Oak Hall the other week. Nathan Jones, eventful game,
29:04I think he finished two-all. There were a couple of late goals and Charlton are a team who
29:11all expect to be doing better this season. They'll probably be in and around Huddersfield
29:15in the table looting against Hull. That really could be one for the faint-hearted.
29:26You know, I think I might have mentioned as well that that will be fascinating. If that game is
29:30level going into the last 10, 15 minutes, you know who sticks and who twists. I think the crowd will
29:39come into play there. It could be a bit of edginess if it's not going well for looting and a crowd
29:44that are really on top of the pitch there. So, I think character and resolve and all those sort
29:52of things will come into the fray for that one. Rotherham, the game speaks for itself going to
30:01Crawley, one of Evans' former clubs. A small step in the right direction against Bradford but
30:10this is the big game this week for Rotherham. It remains to be seen whether Malik Wilkes and
30:17Johnson Clarke-Harris are a feature for Evans' side. I think as well afterwards,
30:25they've got knocked out of the FA Cup, Rotherham. If they lose this one, they've got another,
30:29I think it's something like 10 days until the next back in action. That's a heck of a long
30:36time, isn't it, if you suffer another big, damaging away defeat. So, to me, it's got the makings.
30:45I know they were at Barnsley last time out in the league but I'm struggling to think of league
30:51games bigger in the season so far for Rotherham United than the one on Saturday. Yes, I should
30:57have mentioned Rotherham, definitely. If they had played Bolton the other week, then maybe those 10
31:04days might have come in handy but they just need a bit of rhythm, a bit of cohesion, don't they?
31:12Yes, you can feel the pressure starting to build on Evans in spite of all the credit he's got in
31:18the bank. So, a bit like that Luton Hall game, it won't be one for the faint-hearted, that one.
31:26Sheffield United going to Coventry, that looks a fascinating one. Obviously,
31:32Leeds heading over the Pennines with a big support there. Middlesbrough going to Oxford,
31:40I don't think they've ever played at the Kazan Stadium. That's one to tick off for the Borough
31:45supporters and it remains to be seen what they make up at the midfield. There's obviously talk
31:50about Aidan Morris who's been really good since he's come to Middlesbrough, maybe picking up
31:56something in the international break. And there's talk of Aidan Hackney as well, he pulled out of
32:02the under-21s as well. They're two huge players for Borough. In fairness, they've got people like
32:07Jonny Howson and Balassa to potentially step in, but they're big players for Middlesbrough.
