Alishan Documentary Premieres After Railway Restoration

A collaborative documentary from PTS and Japan's NHK showcases the cultural significance and restoration of the Alishan railway. The documentary will broadcast on PTS and TaiwanPlus in July.

00:00A journey into one of Taiwan's most popular sights, the forest of Alishan.
00:09This train line has existed for over a century, built to transport lumber during Japan's occupation
00:16of Taiwan.
00:17It's now a passenger train, and considered one of the most beautiful mountain railways
00:22in the world.
00:24Over the years, floods and landslides have left parts of the line damaged and closed
00:29off.
00:30But after 15 years of restoration, the full rail line is finally reopening.
00:54A documentary crew from Taiwan Public Television Service, the parent organization of Taiwan
00:59Plus, and Japan's NHK collaborated to film the restoration, along with the scenery of
01:06Alishan and its cultural significance.
01:09They used ultra-high 8K video quality to capture the area's natural beauty, set to an orchestra
01:16soundtrack with narration by Taiwanese actress Kuei-Lun Mei.
01:20It's a project the producers say is invaluable to Taiwan's culture and history.
01:47The documentary premiered at Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial in Taipei, aiming to share the beauty
01:56and significance of Alishan with the world.
